Yep. Just south of the LAC+USC site. That's the old County psychiatric hospital in the background to the right, pediatric building on the far left (both condemned and razed after the Whittier earthquake). State street runs between them, but isn't visible. Picture is taken from the corner of Kingston and Pomeroy, looking north-ish, with I-10 behind the photographer. 1025 Kingston is still there, according to Google Street View

A tad more info: The 253 line was discontinued in 2004 due to low ridership.

Line 253 operated from Compton to County-USC Medical Center through
Lynwood, South Gate, Huntington Park, Maywood, Vernon and East Los
Angeles, through main streets of Euclid Ave., Evergreen Ave., California
Ave. and Bullis Rd.

The 'Whittier Narrows' earthquake occurred in the southern San Gabriel Valley and
surrounding communities of southern California at 7:42 a.m. PDT on October 1, 1987.

Made by Schwartz, Maurice [Los Angeles based custom car builder].
Between 1947 and 1949, MGM Studios ordered six Series 75 Cadillac chassis from Hillcrest Cadillac, the Beverly Hills dealer. These chassis were dispatched to Maurice Schwartz to receive custom, “woodie” bodies.

This 6-door Cadillac station wagon, (2nd unit), was built for cowboy star-singer Gene Autry,

Like yesterday, I'm only posting about half of this Julius Shulman photoset. It's "Job 2214: Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Union Building (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1956".

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original

Here's the entrance from a different angle.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

And a longer view.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original

Now for the interior pictures. The chairs look like they're ready for a meeting or presentation of some kind.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original

This is the the same room, but the table layout here makes me think that this could also be a dining room.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original

In case you can't read the street sign on the far left, I'll reveal the location below.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original

This sculpture is shown from both sides, but I've got no idea who it is.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original

All from Getty Research Institute

The sign in the penultimate picture above is on the corner of 25th and Hill Streets. The distinctive corrugated cladding has gone, but the building is still standing at 2501 S Hill Street. I preferred it without the fence, but at least they've made an effort to make it look better.

It seems somewhat shallow, it backs up to a hillside, and the window pattern could possibly match. I know it's behind trees on the current street view but check out 2007:

Looking at more modern street views it's clear that there is a LOT of fill in the windows, and although the resolution is junk on the old street view,
you can tell from newer ones that the window closest to the front used to be much taller, like the old photo. I'm betting the other two windows on that side
also have some amount of fill.

Inconclusive, but I'd say it's at least possible that this is your building from the old photo.

I believe you're correct ProphetM. I noticed that building too, but for some reason didn't connect the two. (the hillside behind should have been a big clue)

Here's the view I had saved, mostly because I thought it was an intriguing structure.

While I had the Googlemobile at 25th and Hill, I pointed the camera down W 25th Street. I think the white building on the corner is a parking garage.

And here's the mystery building.

Checking the building records, it looks like both structures date back to 1912. 225 and 229 W 25th Street were the Luana and Dixie Apartments respectively - the names still appear up until the 1968 CD. Here they are in the Abbott [sic] Kinney Tract on the 1914 Baist map. Note that Hill Street didn't extend this far south until years later.

North Hollywood Sportsman's Club

While we are still in "Woodie World', here is another of photo from the 8 x10 negs I saved from the trash at North Hollywood Photo back in 1959.

I cannot pinpoint the exact location but it appears to be on Lankershim Boulevard.

From the club website: On January 9th 1939, a group of sportsmen from North Hollywood, California, formed the North Hollywood Sportsman's club. Today, our current members maintain that legacy and seek to introduce new people to the clay target sports we have come to enjoy.

Cheers,

All the Julius Shulman photosets I'm coming across at the moment seem to be quite large, so I've been selective again today. I'll start with three of the color images from "Job 5459: John Portman & Associates, Bonaventure Hotel (Los Angeles, Calif.),1977".

The subject of the Marmion Hotel came up just over a year ago. The picture below was posted by e_r, and at the time I thought that the hotel disappeared between 1972 and 1980. The address was 3903 Marmion Way.

A wall of text with matters which peripherally mention 3903 Marmion Way/Marmion Hotel!:

L.A. Times, 8/28/1945:

EFFORT TO SAVE RUNAWAY CAR LANDS WOMAN IN CACTUS BED

One person who got the point of the quip that the good Samaritan often gets a dirty dig is Mrs. Hilde Foote, 42, of 3903 Marmion Way.
Yesterday she fell into a cactus bed while trying to save a runaway automobile.
Mrs. Foote, manager of a hotel at the Marmion Way address, tried to move the sedan of a guest, James Longsworth, which was parked in a sloping alley behind the hotel.
The car went out of control. Mrs. Foote tried the emergency brake. Didn’t work. By this time the car was heading toward an embankment.
Mrs. Foote jumped out, landing in the cactus bed just under the brow of the 10-foot embankment. The car miraculously came to rest on the edge of the drop, hanging over Mrs. Foote, who was unable to move.
Fire Department Truck Co. No. 1, directed by Battalion Chief Homer L. Hall, laid a ladder across the cactus and lifted Mrs. Foote out. She was treated for minor punctures of her back, arms and knees at Pasadena Avenue Receiving Hospital.

L.A. Times, 12/13/1952:

Roofer Burned When Tar Kettle Overturns

Gordon Earl, 36, roofer, of 3903 Marmion Way, received third-degree burns on head and body yesterday when a kettle of tar overturned on him at 831 S. Grandview Ave.

L.A. Times, 12/7/1954:

Story about several groups of vandals who broke into various schools, one group of vandals breaking into Hollywood High, two of said vandals being “Floyd Earl Russell, 19, 3903 Marmion Way, and his brother, George D. Russell, 18.” They “had broken off the lid of the freezer [in the school cafeteria], scattered bread, cake and butter over the kitchen and poured pepper over the mess. Young Garbo [the third vandal] told juvenile officers: ‘We were kind of hungry and thought we’d get something to eat. We only had some milk and cake.’ Said George Russell: ‘We were riding around and we saw the school. We decided to break in and get something to eat. So we did.’” I have to mention as well another similarly not-very-hardened group of vandals in the same story who broke into “Hawaiian Avenue School, 540 N. Hawaiian Ave., Wilmington. Vandals evidently staged a towel fight, leaving wet towels and water on the gymnasium floor.”

Oh noes, not wet towels and water!!!

Vasquez v. Superior Court

[Civ. No. 25924. Second Dist., Div. Three. Jan. 10, 1962.]
HERACLIO VASQUEZ, Petitioner, v. THE SUPERIOR COURT OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Respondent; THE PEOPLE, Real Party in Interest.
COUNSEL
Wesley Russell and James L. Garcia for Petitioner.
No appearance for Respondent.
William B. McKesson, District Attorney, Harry Wood and Harry B. Sondheim, Deputy District Attorneys, for Real Party in Interest.
OPINION
FRAMPTON, J. pro tem. fn. *

"This is a petition for a writ of prohibition seeking to restrain the respondent court from proceeding with the trial of petitioner on a charge of violation of section 11500, Health and Safety Code, on the grounds that the evidence used against him was obtained by means which violated the due process clauses of the state and United States Constitutions.
[1a] The facts as disclosed by a reading of the transcript of testimony taken at the preliminary hearing show that one Virgin, a police officer of the city of Los Angeles, who had a background of education in narcotics relating to their content, use and effect, and who was attached to the narcotic detail, had previously made some 500 arrests based upon violation of the narcotic laws, and who had qualified and testified as an expert witness on the subject of narcotics violations some 50 times in the respondent court, on the night of June 28, 1961, being armed with a search warrant to search the person of one Richard Costa, a known narcotic peddler, also Costa's residence situated at 3315 Portola Street in the city of Los Angeles, drove to such address. On arrival he observed Costa talking to petitioner who was seated behind the wheel of his car across the street from 3315 Portola Street. Upon approaching the vehicle he saw petitioner reach down at his side and when he raised his arm the officer observed a condom held between petitioner's forefinger and thumb and which contained a white powder. It was the officer's opinion that the object contained a fourth ounce of heroin. Petitioner swallowed the parcel in the officer's presence in spite of a command, "Don't swallow it or I will shoot." The officer stated to petitioner: "You swallowed a quarter, didn't you," and petitioner replied, "Yes." It was the opinion of the officer, based upon his experience in such matters, that petitioner had swallowed a quarter ounce of heroin.

"Petitioner was taken to the Lincoln Heights Receiving Hospital when Allen Harvey Becker, a duly licensed and qualified medical doctor on the staff of the hospital, administered apomorphine [199 Cal. App. 2d 63] to petitioner by hypodermic needle over petitioner's protest. He gave the injection to prevent the absorption into petitioner's system of what he believed to be a lethal dose of heroin. This caused nausea and vomiting and petitioner was thereby caused to regurgitate the condom, found to contain five grams of heroin. Petitioner became extremely weak and was strapped to a treatment table for his own protection, during which time the handcuffs were removed. After the object was regurgitated, petitioner continued to have what was described as the "dry heaves," that is, he continued to vomit without anything left in his stomach to be removed. This was accompanied by nausea. This process took about 30 minutes, after which petitioner was able, unassisted, to accompany the officers to his room in the Marmion Hotel several miles distant from the receiving hospital, where a further cache of heroin (50 grams) was found. [… etc. etc. etc., unrelated to the Marmion Hotel …]"

That was one of two doubledecker buses purchased by RTD from the Neoplan corporation, which was based in West Germany. They arrived in 1975 or 1976, I guess they could be considered demos. They operated out of RTD's El Monte division, and ran on commuter routes in the San Gabriel Valley. In 1981, RTD purchased 20 more doubledeckers from Neoplan (9902-9921) and the original two (9900, 9901) were never seen again. Those also operated from El Monte (and later the Pomona division), also on San Gabriel Valley commuter routes. These buses were retired in 1995.

My quick research on the infamous photograph is that this ballroom isn't anywhere in the Stanley Hotel/Overlook Hotel.

So did Kubrick use an old photograph of a celebration at the Biltmore? There doesn't seem to be an answer on the internet (unless I just haven't found it yet)

& with movie magic, Jack Nicholson has been placed front and center. spooky

With the Good Samaritan Hospital and Samaritan Medical Tower in the background on the right, my guess would be somewhere on Ingraham Street, most likely the section wiped out by the John H Liechty Middle School.

Have we discussed on NLA what this building looked like before the 'tropical' facade? (the description below mentions a 'distressed' property)

"In 1931, Clinton leased a "distressed" cafeteria located at 618 South Olive Street in Los Angeles and founded what his customers referred to as "The Cafeteria of the Golden Rule". Patrons were obliged to pay only what they felt was fair, according to a neon sign that flashed "PAY WHAT YOU WISH."

In 1939, the founders of Clifton’s remodeled the restaurant to change it from a conventional dining establishment to a more exotic setting and renamed it "Clifton's Pacific Seas". The exterior was decorated with waterfalls, geysers and tropical foliage. Brightly illuminated in the evening, it became a mecca for tourists and Angelenos alike, often being referred to in the same category as other prominent landmarks of downtown Los Angeles."

As the sign shows, Miller Drive intersects here at an angle. Many times I've seen tourists miss the La Cienega stop on Sunset Blvd. because it is
announced as the Miller stop.

Possible replacement under consideration:

http://www.wehoville.com/wp-content/...et_project.jpg

This is the opposite side of the street where La Cienega hits Sunset Blvd., as Flyingwedge stated, where the current Sunset La Cienega (formerly Millennium)
project is being built, which replaced the mid-century Petersen Building to the east and Dino's and the Tiffany Theatre etc. to the west.

Two years ago, after that project had been approved, the California Geologic Survey released their mapping of the "Hollywood Fault" which shows
an active earthquake fault running along Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood from North La Cienega Boulevard on the west to Sunset’s intersection
with Havenhurst and North Kilkea drives on the east. The fault moves north of Hollywood Boulevard after its intersection with La Cienega.

Yep, my dad took me out to Santa Anita parking lot to learn how to drive when I was 16. Actually it was a waste of time because I had already taken high school Driver Training and knew how to drive a car.

It was as useless as his belated and awkward talk about 'sex'. His ideas on that subject were primitive in the extreme. Believe me, it was an embarrassing ten minutes.

LAFSCO?

__

Back in mid-March we were talking about LA Fraternal Supply Co, and its sign attached to the Shrine, which likely disappeared when LAFSCO moved to S Main in 1973.

Well, not completely disappeared—I was out at the Museum of Neon Art, when what to my wondering eyes did appear, but the LAFSCO neon sign in all its preserved glory!

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1466/...3f325228_b.jpghttps://farm2.staticflickr.com/1623/...2b0cd3dc_b.jpg

Well not totally preserved, it's lost its tubing, perhaps someday to be restored. Multiple tube housings at the top—judging by those, and the streetcar image, looks like it had a yellow outline around the fez and down and around the tassel.

If you haven't been to MONA yet, go. All sorts of Los Angeles signage up close and personal, the Bendix neon & opal glass, Papoo's Hot Dog, Grand Central Market signs, etc.

HossC Apr 24, 2016 8:31 PM

It probably goes without saying at the moment that I've omitted some images from this Julius Shulman photoset. It's "Job 1654: Jones and Emmons, Sascha Brastoff's Ceramics (Los Angeles, Calif.),1954".

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original

Here's the structure at the right of the picture above.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

Initially, I didn't realize that the wall with the name on it was at the end of a section that floated on narrow supports. This is a detail view from the side.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original

Now we get to see the factory, complete with stairs to the observation platform.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original

The observation platform turned out to be smaller than I expected.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original

There are plenty of examples of Sascha Brastoff's work online. This shot shows a display area with some ceramic pieces.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original

Unfortunately, this is the only color image in the set.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original

I'll finish the Shulman photos with this shot looking over the outdoor display area.

Here's the building permit for the slightly later addition of a new sales office. As you can see, the address was 11520 W Olympic Boulevard.

I can't see a demo permit, but there was an application to use the site as a Christmas tree lot in 1980. The current building (below), with the address 11500 W Olympic Boulevard, seems to have been built in 1981.

I think the "greasy spoon" was on the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Radford Avenue. I posted the aerial below when we were looking for Eatons on Ventura back in October. 'The Corner' might be the building under the copyright message, across the street and to the right of the restaurant I originally arrowed.

It looks like there was a circular drive-in on the corner of Ventura and Laurel Canyon Boulevards.
