Glad it is not..if Sears is going to get topped in this town it should be by something 2k sh...not something that just eeks past it for sake of being tallest in out city. Sears deserves more respect than that.

The zoning app is a good sign. Reilly usually has developers hold off on the filing until he feels satisfied. Might we see this at February plan commission?

This is both exciting and disappointing. Exciting because it sounds like they want to build very tall and believe they can build very tall, but disappointing because they may be deliberately staying below Sears. It reminds me of an early design of NYC's Central Park Tower, which was just 1 ft shorter than the WTC.

I see where you are coming from, but personally I don't care for this type of "respect". I just want Chicago to have a new tallest building, even if Sears is topped by just 1 ft, because the city hasn't had a new tallest building in 47 years. Am I alone on this?

Couldn't agree more.

I wouldn't care, the Sears is a cool building but it's not sacred, it'll also be half a century old by the time this thing is completed. Imagine if NYC never topped the Empire State Building.

Just a thought, could the 1442 figure be to the top floor? That'd be neat.

What you talking bout Willis?

I doubt the height of the Willis Tower is something they are taking into consideration.

When you are that close to the number, someone could have mentioned it. Possibly as a marketing opportunity. Possibly as an ego stroking thing. Possibly just to note it for no particular reason.

IDK why I have so much difficulty navigating that GD site.

Can someone post the link to the ordinance page?

I am looking at the PDF found here: https://chicago.legistar.com/View.as...C-42A6B9A1C1F1 . The diagrams on pages 36 - 41 show that 1442 is to the tip of the crown, unfortunately.

Where is 1442 measured from? The drawings in the app all list the height from upper Illinois as 1422. Is there another 20 feet to lower Illinois? Do we know if MEP is included in the 1442 number, if so the final height would presumably be a little shorter, right?

Oh okay, I figured we weren't that lucky. The figure may be above sea or lake level in any case, that would make sense, still making it 1422 feet

BVictor1 Jan 14, 2020 8:55 PM

I'm guessing that 1,442' will be the maximum allowed buildable height.

All the drawings still say 1,422'.

looking at the diagram posted, my guess is 1,422' from upper illinois / 1,442' from lower illinois.

CTBUH would likely list it at 1,442' as long as there's an entrance from lower illinois (which there certainly will be).

CTBUH would list/measure it from upper entrance... not open air entrance

i thought they changed their own rules a few years ago to list height from the sidewalk outside the lowest building entrance, which in this case would be lower illinois.

pianowizard Jan 14, 2020 9:10 PM

Sorry for being terribly unclear in my previous post. Yes, the drawings show 1422, but the text says "building 1,442' in height" on pages 1, 58, and 63.

I agree with Dan's interpretation.
