I am a lightweight poster, but I have had no problems with imgur either.

Can we say you've had no problem with ''imgur'' yet?

Complaint department:

Yeah, I'm wondering if all the p.o.'d photobucket users travel to these other sites and those sites get overwhelmed, they might do the same thing.

It would have been one thing if photobucket had said "from now on you can't do it", or given warning, but IMO they've acted in extremely bad faith. $400 today, how much tomorrow?

I belong to another forum where someone regularly did amazing photoshop work on various themes that fit the thread and he used a photo hosting site whose name I don't recall, but one day, I believe it was 6-7 years ago, the whole hosting website just disappeared along with everyone's photos on it.

And you always hear people say "once it's on the internet it's always there." ?

If photobucket had given any kind of warning, I'd have been pulling a great many photos of my personal interests from NLA onto my desktop to make sure I'd still be able to see them. In fact, that's how I found out about this on July 3rd. I was searching for a photo and newspaper article about something that NoirCityDame had posted to show someone who had inquired about this subject to me when I discovered the photobucket warning and no photos in the post. Since many of her posts contain L.A. Times newspaper ads or columns that she had access to, the photo links won't be much use unless one signs up for that access, etc. She had also posted a photo in regards to the article that had come from an eBay seller, so not only was her photo in hostage mode, but the link to it was gone, because we know eBay links disappear after a period because those auction dates are gone. But guess what? When I did a Google photo search for some images I was looking for, the images popped up on the icon search page, but not in the "view image" or "visit page" screens.

I read that photobucket has upwards of 14 billion images hosted on their site.

There was another great site called A Certain Cinema started by Sérgio Leemann where, among other things, he had compiled the most fantastic collection of Hollywood celebrity photographs in all kinds of categories. I have forgotten the reason, but a half-dozen years ago the site suddenly disappeared. Sergio tried to migrate all of his photos to Facebook, but this never happened.

E_R, I know you don't use photobucket, but it made me wonder, if you did, how many photos you have posted that come from eBay sellers; photos that one may never have seen otherwise...how would one ever see those again if they disappeared?

The thing about the internet is, it's not like a book goes out of print, but you'd still be able to find one somewhere, to buy or look at.

...sigh...

From wiki.............As of June 30, 2017, Photobucket requires a $99 annual subscription to allow external linking to hosted images and a $399 annual subscription to allow the embedding of images on third-party websites, such as personal blogs and forums. This policy change, enacted with no advance warning, has been highly controversial.

2 GB - free
20 GB - $2.99/month, $29.99/year
50 GB - $4.99/month, $49.99/year
100 GB - $8.99/month, $89.99/year
200 GB - $16.99/month, $169.99/year
500 GB - $39.99/month, $399.99/year (Only option that allows embedding/hotlinking)...[.such as norish Los Angeles]

PB has 100 Million users...those 100,000,000 just got the shaft.

HossC Jul 12, 2017 6:59 PM

I still can't get my images to show at full size, but they're showing for me at 1024 px wide!

----------------

Although no location is given with this Julius Shulman photoset, the clues are there. It's "Job 031: William Hempel, Craig Oil Company, Service Station, 1946". I've picked five of the nine images.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...raigOilCo1.jpg

A view from the other end shows the tall roadside sign, and another for Signal in the distance.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...raigOilCo2.jpg

This elevated look across the forecourt is also the best look at the interior.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...raigOilCo3.jpg

I wonder who had this view. If you haven't guessed the location yet, we're on Wilshire Boulevard. Next to the "Three Feathers" sign is the 4 Star Theatre at 5112 Wilshire Boulevard. On the far right you can just see Myer Siegel.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...raigOilCo4.jpg

I'll finish with one of the two night shots. The crown-like neon in the background is the "General of America Insurance" sign atop the E Clem Wilson Building.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...raigOilCo5.jpg

All from Getty Research Institute

The Craig Oil Company service station was at 5001 Wilshire Boulevard. By the time the demo permit was issued in 1986, it was owned by the Thrifty Oil Company. You'll now find a 2-story strip mall on the site.

When we first realized the thread was becoming something rather special,
several people began to archive the first 2 or 3 years of the thread (this was back in year 3 or 4)
I believe 3940dxer was one of them. I tried for awhile, but I really didn't know what I was doing.

As for your question Lorendoc, I don't know whether skyscraperpage archives any of the threads.

Hoss refresh my memory, have we seen this 1932 photograph by Julius Shulman? (odds are we have)

Mr. Shulman would only have been 22 years old when he took this photograph.

It looks like early morning to me.

Balboa

As a diversion from the PhotoBucket o' Blues we're feeling- and to escape the hot weather in the valleys- we can visit Balboa, site of many happy childhood summer weeks.

These are from the McMillan collection at UCI, apologies for the file sizes.

From atop the ferris wheel at the old Fun Zone on a windy day in the early 50's (?). The Balboa pier is visible to the right of the Balboa Inn (with the observation tower).
Also in the frame (below the Inn) is the Balboa Theater which is still standing, though having been for sale for some years.

The Bank of America building is gone, but the "Surf and Sand" seems to be there along with some of its neighbors.

On the bay side of Washington St (left from the Ferris wheel view).

One of these guys and his wife are driving the Caddy to the butcher and home for swordfish steaks, and the other one is
headed back to his trailer behind the Lee Haven on PCH for beer and cigarettes.

The first house is 117-year-old 27 St. James Park, which still stands. Its history is here:
http://stjamesparklosangeles.blogspo...histories.html

The second house above isn't the Earl house but rather the home of Homer Laughlin, who we've seen on NLA before-- it was at 666 West Adams Blvd. Though it does not as yet have a full story attached, it is part of this inventory: adamsboulevardlosangeles.blogspot.com; in the meantime. see http://bit.ly/2vhbtPX

A history of the Edwin T. Earl house once at 2425 Wilshire Blvd is here:

'mystery' location / somewhere along Hollywood Blvd.

A.P. Press Photo

While double-parked on busy Hollywood blvd. Friday night, Gov. Brown signed four bond issues totaling $870 million that will appear on the June 5 ballot. The reason for this unusual setting? Although all four issues had been approved by the Legislature, the governor had to sign them before midnight. An aide flew in from Sacramento with the documents and met Brown as the governor was leaving a Democratic Party rally at his Hollywood campaign headquarters. Police officers set up flares behind the governor's car while he used it as a temporary capitol. One of the bond issues call for $200 million for school construction. The others propose $270 million for state colleges and universities, $250 million for veterans' housing and $150 million for acquisition of beaches and parks."

Here's today's Julius Shulman post. It's "Job 1897: Kenneth Wing, Bixby Knolls Medical Arts Center (Long Beach, Calif.), 1954". I've picked four of the seven images.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original

This appears to be a courtyard behind the building with the sign.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

The waiting room looks smaller than the one we saw a few days ago.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original

I'm not sure what to make of this last image, Are they dentists' chairs on the left? If so, then why the seating area on the right?

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original

All from Getty Research Institute

Slightly to my surprise, the Medical Arts Center, complete with sign, is still standing at 901-925 E San Antonio Drive, Long Beach.

UPDATE: Photobucket notified me by email today that I had been very naughty by using Photobucket in excess and then rudely using Photobucket for 3rd Party hosting. I thought that is what you're supposed to do. I guess this is some sort of criminal act on my part that I didn't know about.

They then demanded that I pay them $400.00 per year, and every year thereafter......and they would then be happy to forgive and forget my almost ten year ''crime spree''.

I expect a knock on my door at any moment.

[I did notice today that Photobucket has sneakily redesigned their photo link options and removed the ''img'' option link....which they had previously advertised for linking to webpages.]

I just deleted my account with them. (My account was very modest, only 85 or 86 pix.) I hope to find a replacement service in due course. Most certainly, I'll meantime still be present here, and posting textually when I have some comment to contribute, as it's just too wonderful here to leave. . . . I . . . I just can't quit you, NLA . . . ;)
