US Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Phoenix, Arizona, mayor Greg Stanton unveiled the details of a US$25 million programme to allow affordable solar power access to 1,000 Arizona homeowners. The second phase of the US’ largest city-sponsored residential solar financing program launched today thanks to the cash infusion from the National Bank of Arizona (NBA). The program is estimated to generate 234 direct and indirect jobs.

Solar Phoenix 2 allows qualifying homeowners throughout Arizona who are within the APS (Arizona Public Service) and SRP (Salt River Project) service territories, to install a solar system on their home with no upfront investment. Homeowners simply pay monthly to lease the equipment and enjoy the clean solar electricity the system will generate.

The program takes advantage of a new solar lease, which also provides a performance guarantee and covers all system maintenance. The homeowner's monthly payment for the solar electricity is typically lower than their previous electricity bills, and depending on their usage, customers are expected to see up to 10 to 15% utility savings per month.

"Solar Phoenix 2 leads the way for a brighter and more secure energy future, a future for which I, as mayor, intended to aggressively advocate on behalf of our residents," Phoenix mayor Greg Stanton said. "We are tapping into Arizona's greatest resource, we're making solar happen and we're creating real jobs in our city. Solar Phoenix 2 reaffirms that Phoenix is the definitive place for investment in solar energy and opportunity and for a sustainable and successful economic future."

"As Arizona's largest community bank, we are committed to economically sound and safe lending practices as well as bringing a sustainable future to the communities we serve," said Craig Robb, managing director of National Bank of Arizona and Zions Energy Link. "The pursuit towards sustainable energy independence for the masses is a long road with the biggest challenge being the cost of capital and availability of financing. Our $25 million commitment to support Solar Phoenix 2 is part of a long-term vision to help overcome the barriers to entry for solar power."

The original Solar Phoenix program, that was only available to Phoenix residents, was announced in November 2009 and ran throughout 2010. In one year, the program provided over 400 residential customers with a solar energy solution, generated approximately 2.8MW of power and deployed over US$26 million into the community.

The program is a collaboration among the city of Phoenix, National Bank of Arizona, Arizona Public Service and SRP Salt River Project.

Good news in theory, but I've heard some credible arguments that Downtown already has as many restaurants as the market will bear. Let's hope the three restaurants get plenty of traffic from residents of the new aparment complex across the street. A bigger residential base is critical to providing a steady clientele that makes restaurants less reliant on First Friday surges.

Habit Burger Grill to open new Phoenix restaurant

The Habit Burger Grill, a privately owned, Santa Barbara, Calif.-based hamburger chain, plans to open its fourth Arizona location in Phoenix on June 20.

The new restaurant will be located at McDowell Road and 7th Avenue.

“We made a strategic decision two years ago that we wanted to enter the Phoenix area,” said Russ Bendel, president and CEO of the Habit Burger Grill. “We have continued to look for additional sites around Phoenix.”

The Habit’s signature dish is its charburger, which is cooked on an open flame and costs $2.95. Habit also offers options like albacore tuna sandwich and a variety of salads.

“What differentiates us from others is the breadth of our menu,” Bendel said.

Bendel added that unlike other burger companies that target mostly male demographic, Habit usually attracts an equal proportion of male and female diners.

“We are a more gender-neutral burger concept,” Bendel said.

Seriously, WTF is a gender neutral burger joint? Whatever... I'm looking forward to more businesses at 7th and McDowell.

My guess is they butcher only transvestite cows. Fitting for the neighborhood.

Target Demolition

They seem to be about half way on the Target demolition on 7th Ave. and Camelback (sorry, no pics).

what are they doing after they demolish it?

Building a place for fat people to go one time and walk on a treadmill for 8.5 minutes then never go back, yet keep paying for it.

New LA Fitness. If it looks as nice as the one on Northern, it'll be a positive addition for the area.

Moved out a couple weeks back. Representatives from Circle K will be at this month's Evans Churchill Neighborhood meeting on June 13th to talk about their proposal for the site.
