That will be real close to the Obama Center and The Rube (Rubenstein Forum).

Been meaning to get photos of this! Passed it by a few times recently and was curious. Is this transitioning to a steel frame? I thought that was the case, until I saw the rebar in-place for a few vertical columns in the photo below. In my limited experience, it seems odd that the concrete core would so quickly outpace the columns & floor plates.
[QUOTE=danielschell;7727796]Nice progress at Solstice On The Park http://wp.me/p7uLxw-2qa https://buildingupchicagodotcom.file....jpg?w=1250&h= |
There's a loader on the boutique hotel site and they've begun taking down the fence and clearing out the building. I guess as soon as they get a demo permit issued the show will really start.

An update on Solstice from mid-last month:

That building is toast. But you know how much I like it when they knock down old, ugly shit.
|
Could there be a case made for architectural preservation? That center window is right smack dab in the middle.
|
Why no groundbreaking for the Rube?
https://news.uchicago.edu/article/20...benstein-forum I guess still waiting for permits, right? |

The Loop is getting a Blues Museum in 2019.
This is the real deal. Finally! |

10 years in the making! So it is all concrete? Not concrete and steel. Sort of like Ancient Rome. :)

Here in LA you still see some wooden apartments being built--or maybe concrete on the bottom and wood on the upper floors (because it's shorter stuff--5, 6, or 7 stories). |

As of now the building is rubble and they'll probably have the site cleared by tomorrow. |
Could Antheus' apparent issues affect Solstice or 53rd & Cornell?

Spectacular views of UChicago campus. And about 1:10--North Campus, Vue53, and City Hyde Park all in the frame:

Could 63rd St be the next 53rd St?
http://chicago.curbed.com/2017/3/30/...lofts-woodlawn If 63rd St actually did become great again, and became a real alternative for South Hyde Park, that would be kind of interesting since technically 59th and 60th Streets are closer to 63rd Street than 53rd Street. Suddenly students, not to mention others, could head south instead of north for shopping. |

Are images of the projects still available?

The first page is 5 years old...images uploaded freely don't always survive that long. In any case, as you said, most of those projects have been completed so you can see the final results firsthand (or Google Streetview).

There's bit of contention about minority participation regarding this project. Because of no public subsidies, it seems like the developer doesn't want to meet city standards of 26/6 Looks like the commission wants to change the rules (in the future) for all plan developments to meet said standards. APPROVED! As the project meets CURRENT REQUIREMENTS (two no's) Construction could begin within the next 8-12 months. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C93gsOtUAAA9LTn.jpg https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C93gsOzUIAA7r2z.jpg https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C93gsOtU0AAMcgv.jpg |
bvic, what do you mean, because of no public subsidies, developer doesnt want to meet city standards of 26/6? And what proposed changes did the plan commission talk about they would change for the future?

^^ I believe the 26/6 standard means 26% Minority Business Enterprise and 6% Female Business Enterprise participation among the various subcontractors. If the firm is owned by minority or female, and certified with the city/state, it would qualify as MBE/FBE. For instance, CPS work is 30/7, UIC work is 30/5.
I am proud of the developer here for pushing back against the city emphasizing a business owner's skin color over the content of their character, let alone qualifications of their company. This push for 'equality' also means that no matter how many minorities or women you employ, if you're just a non-minority guy who owns a painting company, your proposals get tossed, no matter the price, and your employees sit at home, every time you're up against an MBE/FBE-owned company when the owner or GC is concerned about meeting their quota. It' a sad system. |
I think I like this new design better for 53rd & Cornell, especially from certain angles. Something seemed to be slightly off in that original drawing.

Would love to have posted a pic, but I just landed in Hong Kong enroute to Jakarta and Bandung. I'll post pics of the 53rd Street project when I return home. I will say I'm so glad the Dunkin Donut/University of Chicago police station was torn down. The hotel will be a vast improvement from a pedestrian and urban texture standpoint. |
