It is very nice inside and except for the overhead shot you have here, you can't really see the house in its entirety from ground level.

But the gardens (Descanso) make the house. I'd take it along with all its faults, as the surroundings are exquisite!

Another interesting house in La Canada/Flintridge, is The Lanterman House, built in 1915 or so. Took the tour a couple of years ago; fascinating construction. Sorry, never learned how to post photos, but here's a link:

'mystery' location / mislabeled photograph?

The recent discussion on sailors made me think of this noirish photograph I happen upon a couple months ago.

It's attributed to the famous street photographer Garry Wynogrand [1950]

Even though it's shrouded in fog, I believe the building in the far distance is the Post Office Terminal Annex down by Union Station.

But the majority of websites place the location as New York.

I don't like any of James Dolena's larger neo-Georgian efforts. I find them charmless. Symmetry usually helps, but not in Dolena's case. I like some of his smaller homes.

Paul R Williams was brilliant at Hollywood Regency. The master.

S Charles Lee could pull it off on occasion too:


Dolena certainly had his fans among the Hollywood elite, sometimes collaborating w/ Billy Haines, who handled interiors.

It was Dolena who remodeled a Spanish-style duplex for Haines' own home.

Dolena's other clients are listed on his wiki page.

It was George Cukor's Dolena home's pool area which was rebuilt on a sound stage for "Something's Got to Give" (1962, unfinished).

The Lanterman House is by AL Haley who also did the Bisbee Inn (St George Hotel) & the Higgins Building. It's listed.

There are even descriptions of the sailor "walking in the snow"--which I'm not seeing. Winogrand did move west at some point; I think it could be a view toward the east-northeast from, say, the Hill Street overpass over the freeway...which appears to have similar lamp standards...perhaps with the lens bringing the PO Annex closer to the camera... although the angles may not add up. Broadway? Spring? The railings on all these overpasses are very similar to those in the picture. (On Hill Street there appears to be what may be the slope near the famous Ft. Moore waterfall.)

Neither the overhead or fisheye views are very flattering to the Boddy house... I would bet that it has more charm when viewed as a human rather than as a bird or a fish.


As for the Lantermans--great scandal-- more details are googleable, but I think the doctor got in trouble constantly for doing--hmm--"d&cs"-- and sometimes for admiring the goods a little to closely. Thrown in jail on occasion. His son Frank redeemed the family--there is a school named after him that now occupies much of the space of once-leafy St. James Park.

I guess GW is right. I recognize the white building on the right with the 9 rectangular windows. We've seen it numerous times. It was located on the east sidewalk of Hill Street just south of the back of the Plaza Church. And it seems I see the shape of a gaz tank behind the building.

...and I'm wondering if the building corner seen at far right could be one of the Brunswig buildings we've seen here many times (I didn't reverify to any extent, but I think this is a Brunswig Bldg)....
