I remember every once in a-while your ball (they're hard!) would ricochet off the game and every would have to duck for cover!

Many of the photographs have a romantic quality to them.
I always felt this was a 'noir' city, especially in the winter when the warm Santa Ana winds swept through the basin.

I lived on Hancock between Santa Monica Blvd. and Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.
Amazingly, the small bungalow where I lived is still there.

Enough said:
Here are the photographs of Los Angeles.
I will continue posting them over the next several months.

Please feel free to add any old L.A. photos you might have.

So glad the inappropriate marquee has been removed!:previous: The building is way too beautiful to have that thing stuck on the front.

Here's that link again to rcarlton's post on the Stowell.

You work in the toy industry Bristolian? Now that's pretty cool.

:previous:Hoss, I realize the photograph above is dated 1929, but perhaps the 'mystery' structure was a seasonal attraction like the one I found in this November 1940 issue
of Pacific Electric Magazine.

This one was located on Wilshire Boulevard between Curson and Sierra Bonita .

It was huge! An entire city block facing Wilshire, and another block for parking!

-makes me wonder why we haven't come across a photo of this thing?

The Christmas Show also included a fully decorated snowman's cave, a staging area for Christmas plays, a gingerbread house, a magic castle, performing animals, Santa's castle, a fairyland, and a variety of amusement rides. The benefit, held at 5843 Wilshire Boulevard in Hancock Park, took place from November 20 to December, 25, 1940.http://jpg1.lapl.org/00088/00088654.jpg

As an unnecessary reminder, the '29 image is further west on Wilshire at Fairfax, in natural tar trap territory. (Don't wear your best shoes.) This probably was an impediment for locating any permanent structures there, and may have made it a natural location for temporary or, as HossC describes it, seasonal, construction. Prior to that, recall that Wilshire and Crescent/Fairfax was agricultural and used for airport/s. There is also evidence that the area was used for golf. Can't seem to locate the image I had in mind. Fairfax and Sixth had some sort of makeshift golf related enterprises (driving ranges/par 3 courses?) over the years, including Manville Golf School pictured in '31. In another image, there is a sign advertising golf at what appears to have been the SE corner of Sixth and Fairfax. Perhaps that was part of Manville or something even bigger.

It was huge! An entire city block facing Wilshire, and another block for parking!

"Christmas Show will cover an entire city block on Wilshire Boulevard between Curson and Sierra Bonita, and extending back to Sixth Street. An additional city block, adjoining will be used as a parking lot."

That seems to describe the blocks where the Prudential Building was constructed a few years later. Sierra Bonita ran roughly through the middle of the site - I think that remnants are still visible in the 1948 aerial. Here's a current view.

I was interested to see the comparison with the Crystal Palace in London. The original building was constructed in Hyde Park, London for the The Great Exhibition of 1851. In 1854, it was re-built in South-East London where the area and soccer team still bear the name Crystal Palace.

The Crystal Palace served as a huge exhibition space for goods from around the world until it burned down in 1936, just four years before e_r's article.

Despite my searches, I've been unable to locate today's Julius Shulman subject. It's "Job 4409: Ramberg and Lowrey, Telephone Building (Anaheim, Calif.), 1968".

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original

Here's the street number, but it still didn't help. Is it just me, or is the perspective weird in this image?

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

The last shot mainly shows brickwork, but the view down the street on the right may identify the location.

All from Getty Research Institute

So, does anyone recognize it?

I don't believe we have seen this amazing looking drug store on NLA.

There are only two previous references to "Weston's" on NLA; one for Doug Weston's Troubadour and the other for Weston's Tropico Photography Studio.

-but nothing on this drug store.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/5kVFPU.jpg
http://www.snapshotphotographs.com/

The source says Weston's was located on Colorado Blvd. and Fair Oaks in Pasadena [the pic is dated 1935]

Another site had some fun with the photograph (see below)

http://www.whatwasthere.com/browse.a...fo/sv/zoom/14/

:previous: But this is the intersection of Colorado Blvd and Lake Ave. (so I am confused) -yes, once again ;)

Long story short....I don't know which location is correct.

'mystery' location.

I found this on the jalopyjournal forum, page 3, Post #85.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/Rx9biM.jpg
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/t....446547/page-3

There was no information included with the photograph, but I believe a lot of the photographs on the JJ forum originate from the usc archives.

(but without any information, it's impossible to look it up in the archive, obviously)

Anyone recognize this intersection?
__

I'm not sure if we have seen this photograph before on NLA.

ethereal_reality Nov 10, 2016 10:29 PM

'mystery' parking lot.

Here's one more from jalopyjournal that has me intrigued.

It appears the street on the left curves around that modern looking 'box' building.

& it's some-what odd the billboard on the right (the dark one) is smack-dab in the middle of the parking lot!

Just for reference, the original picture comes from LAPL rather than USC. Their title is How to earn a ticket by "darting", and the caption reads:
Officer Dan Knock at the wheel of the oncoming Chevrolet, shows how to earn a ticket by "darting." Just as the signal starts to change, he jumps out and turns left in front of cars in the foregound. He is violating the law, even though he crossed through the turn before the other cars could get near him. He is also cutting across the double lines, which is illegal. He should have pulled out to the intersection in his own lane, and waited for the cars facing him to pass. Photo dated: July 25, 1955.

The water-lily family, absolutely correct! The latest scientific research confirms that ladies coming out of flowers--guys, too, for that matter--has not been conclusively observed in the wild, but has been found to occur in advertising and on the vaudeville and ballet stage. Research, however, continues.
