(Don't wear your best shoes.) This probably was an impediment for locating any permanent structures there, and may have made it a natural location for temporary or, as HossC describes it, seasonal, construction. Prior to that, recall that Wilshire and Crescent/Fairfax was agricultural and used for airport/s. There is also evidence that the area was used for golf. Can't seem to locate the image I had in mind. Fairfax and Sixth had some sort of makeshift golf related enterprises (driving ranges/par 3 courses?) over the years, including Manville Golf School pictured in '31. In another image, there is a sign advertising golf at what appears to have been the SE corner of Sixth and Fairfax. Despite my searches, I've been unable to locate today's Julius Shulman subject. It's "Job 4409: Ramberg and Lowrey, Telephone Building (Anaheim, Calif.), 1968".

I don't believe we have seen this amazing looking drug store on NLA.

Just for reference, the original picture comes from LAPL rather than USC. Their title is How to earn a ticket by "darting", and the caption reads: Officer Dan Knock at the wheel of the oncoming Chevrolet, shows how to earn a ticket by "darting." Just as the signal starts to change, he jumps out and turns left in front of cars in the foregound. He is violating the law, even though he crossed through the turn before the other cars could get near him. He is also cutting across the double lines, which is illegal. He should have pulled out to the intersection in his own lane, and waited for the cars facing him to pass. Photo dated: July 25, 1955. |
