I still like the RethinkNYC plan better.

Rethink NYC has some fundamental flaws. I suggest you read https://pedestrianobservations.wordp...oo-few-trunks/

This is a bad idea for several reasons:

First off, LGA has a low share of total traffic in proportion to the number of planes that use it. This airspace congestion reduces capacity at EWR and JFK. Indeed, a compelling case to close and redevelop LGA can be made, because the lost capacity can be made up for by more efficient operations at EWR and JFK because of simpler aircraft movements, larger planes, high speed rail for regional planes, and expansion of JFK and EWR.

LGA sits on some very valuable real estate, and developing it could benefit new York, making it richer and less expensive overall while also improving LGA-adjacent neighborhoods.

Finally, spreading air traffic over multiple airports leads to lower efficiency, since less connections are available, which often are necessary to sustain certain flights. Concentrating all Star Alliance traffic at EWR and all Sky Team/One World traffic at JFK would result in better flight options for both New Yorkers and people making connections.

Airport expansion often leads to widespread protest for nearby neighborhoods for aviation noise. How can the expansion plan go through environmental assessment in the NIMBY Capital of the World? The City would be better off if the airport is relocated and the land is redeveloped.

I agree. My point is that expanding LGA is a fundamentally bad idea.

I'm kinda surprised at some of the responses regarding the expansion. I thought more would be for it. :( Airports are an important part of the city. They have to grow to keep up with the demand. I think we are overdue for it.

Do you guys feel that the environmental impact is worth it? Kinda a trade off, like any other major infrastructure project.

Of course airports are important and should grow, but cities should ideally have one or two airports and focus on just them. Otherwise, things just get inefficient.

For those not aware, there's been some bs lately with trains derailing.

I'm very grateful that I never have to take NJT or go to Penn Station.

... except when I go to Giants games

If you redo LGA, does a runway configuration exist that does not interfere with JFK and NWA?

As the Daily News reports, the first phase of the overall Moynihan Station Development Project will begin soon, extending Penn Station’s West End Concourse to reduce congestion. The second phase will transform the James A. new subway cars on the way with more to come + a new test track to get them into service quicker:

New MTA subway cars to come into service this year
By Vincent Barone vin.barone@amny.com April 24, 2017

New subway cars, long delayed in their delivery, will start rolling through MTA stations before the end of the year, the agency announced Monday.

A batch of about 70 new cars will go into service this year to replace the oldest subway cars in the agency’s fleet on the J, Z and C lines, which have now become prone to breaking down. Another 230 or so will be put into service as they’re delivered over the course of 2018, according to Steve Plochochi, the MTA’s vice president of procurement and material.

Another incident at Penn. I give up with this city seriously addressing infrastructure. We're all doomed.

Summary of issues from the past eight weeks, courtesy of Newsday.

"RECENT AMTRAK-RELATED DISRUPTIONS
April 25: A problem with the overhead electrical system in one of Amtrak’s East River tunnels resulted in widespread cancellations and delays for the LIRR and a temporary suspension of westbound service.

April 14: A power problem in one of Amtrak’s Hudson River tunnels caused 1,200 people to be stuck on a disabled NJ Transit train for three hours in Penn Station, and spurred residual delays for the LIRR.

April 3: An NJ Transit train derailment caused by Amtrak track problems caused a week of major service disruptions for the LIRR, which relinquished four tracks at Penn Station to allow Amtrak and NJ Transit trains to operate.

March 24: An Amtrak train derailed and sideswiped an NJ Transit train, causing major disruptions for the LIRR, which relinquished four tracks at Penn Station to allow Amtrak and NJ Transit trains to operate.

March 6: A problem in an Amtrak switch interlocking in one of the East River tunnels cut the LIRR’s track capacity in half during the evening rush hour, resulting in nearly two dozen canceled trains, a suspension of all westbound service, and lengthy delays."
