Vintage Minneapolis-St. Paul II: the 1990s

This is part II of my series of scanned slides of the Twin Cities area.
The 1990s started off with a continuation of the downtown office building boom which had kicked off in 1978. The boom culminated in 1992 with completion of four major towers (First Bank Place, Dain Rauscher Plaza, AT&T Center and LaSalle Plaza). Needless to say by the time these buildings were completed, the economy had entered recession and office vacancy ballooned. No new office buildings were built until about 1998, when developments began for new headquarters for American Express Financial Advisors (now known as Ameriprise) and US Bank, plus Target began their corporate HQ.
Although retail development continued during the 1990s with Gavidae II (a multi-level downtown mall anchored by Neiman Marcus), the opening of the massive Mall of America in 1992 had a significant negative impact on downtown retail (both Minneapolis and St. Paul). Still the flagship Dayton's store at 7th & Nicollet provided a major anchor for downtown retail.
The edges of downtown remained characterized by lots of parking lots, but there were a few new housing developments that were built along the Mississippi Riverfront. The opening of the Stone Arch Bridge for pedestrian/biking traffic in 1993 helped attract attention to the riverfront.

If I was select one tune that represented the sound of Minneapolis in the 1990s, it would be this tune by Golden Smog. Give it a spin!

Great stuff! I suppose the early 90's could be "vintage." It does seem like a different time in those pictures.

Buckeye Native 001 Jun 22, 2021 9:17 PM

The snow of those February 1994 photos reminded me that we had a really bad winter/ice storm in Cincinnati in January or February of that year. I'm guessing Minneapolis also got it, but probably worse because it's farther north?

I like this, I definitely did not see it both times I have visited!

plinko Aug 24, 2021 3:10 AM

I think I’ve changed planes at MSP three times, but one time it was like a 7 hour layover. I took a bus to downtown Minneapolis. Didn’t have much time and it was January but what I saw was lovely. This was around 1997 or so. Sadly I’ve never made it back.

These photos are great. The only photos I have of this vintage are of Phoenix, Las Vegas, and LA.

i have actually vacationed there 3x, including once in the 1990s.

the last time we went a few years ago we met some friends out and they said, “so what did you do on your first day?” and we said, “oh you know, the usual touristy thing, we went to matt’s for a juicey lucy” and they just stared at us and said, “minneapolis doesn’t get any tourists.” lol not true!

For it's size Minneapolis doesn't really get a lot of tourists! What was frustrating for me was when I'd ask people who visit the Twin Cities what they visited, invariably they'd say "oh, The Mall of America". I'd ask Did you see the lakes? "uh, no"; Minnehaha Falls? "uh, no". How about the view from the Stone Arch Bridge? "well, maybe next time"

this is probably almost shameful after three visits, but i have never been to the mall of america. i had been to the previous largest mall in america, randall park in cleveland, now long gone, so i feel like i had that kind of thing covered lol.

damn it, there are really awesome photos here!

Chef Aug 31, 2021 9:57 PM

Nice photos! I'm pretty sure the Berman Buckskin building was the oldest building in the Warehouse District when they knocked it down. It was torn down for the new Federal Reserve branch. Minneapolis is in the habit of decrying all the classic old buildings it has torn down and then doing it again.

Sorry, but I gotta agree with Chef. Minneapolis has very few older commercial buildings with individual storefronts remaining in the downtown. Most of the original 1880s downtown was demolished as part of the Gateway Urban Renewal project in the early 1960s. Then the combination of a downtown building boom plus the popularity of skyways led to demolition of the smaller older buildings to be replaced with larger mixed use, corporate office, hotel or apartment properties.
As a resident of Ohio for the past 10 years, I’d say Ohio cities have lots of issues, but the loss of historic building stock is less than what Minneapolis experienced, especially a city like Cincinnati.

Nightsky Sep 1, 2021 12:02 PM

This song really fits with the 90s pictures! Didn't even own a camera backthen. The skyline and streets haven't changed much, but the cars are really different now.
