We've had several mentions of the 'Brass Rail' at 334 S. Hill St.
photo here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=23849 ...but have we seen Perry's Brass Rail in Hollywood? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...538/SmD7jO.jpg eBay info: 1933 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...540/ce0Nkz.jpg reverse of photo. below: I found this in the 1936 directory; but I'm not sure if this is Perry's. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...540/VBcPtg.jpg http://rescarta.lapl.org/ResCarta-We...00003/00000002 Soooooo....what building, near Hollywood and Vine, housed Perry's Brass Rail? |

eBay As long as I'm asking questions ;)...... Does anyone familiar with the Monterey Park area recognize this community church? (perhaps the highway signs at far left offer a clue to it's location) __ |

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X....bmp.jpg?gl=US ebay Another, older view. Looks like it's long gone-- apparently 60/70/99 ran along Garvey Avenue in the late '30s. So I'm going to say that the church was at the NW corner of Garvey & Baltimore. Here is the corner today--this may be true of a million corners, but note how the street still rises to meet the very corner, sloping off down the streets toward the drains on each side.... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-s....bmp.jpg?gl=US |

(I'm a bit slow at times) __ Recently found on eBay: "An excursion by the Los Angeles Chamber of Congress to Honolulu (1920s?)" http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/661/xgqJA4.jpg eBay I'm not sure, but I believe the ship is the S.S. Los Angeles. I just found this photograph of the S.S. Los Angeles. Same ship? -it only makes sense. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...540/nmRzPR.jpg http://maritimematters.com/wp-conten...dockingHon.jpg |

Here's something I wasn't aware of....
Disneyland had a Hill's Bros. 'Coffee Garden' in the Town Square, circa 1959. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...538/l896Gz.jpg eBay So where in the Town Square was this located? I can't picture it at all. __ |
ER & GW, my family moved to Monterey Park in 1954, and my wife's family settled there in 1947. Neither of us have any recollection of the Community Church (or any other frame residential structure) on Garvey Ave. My recollection of the site at the NW corner of Garvey and Baltimore in the 1960s is that it was a Wilshire Oil service station. Sorry that I can't be more precise.

The 1956 CD lists it as Petta's Italian Restaurant and Stein's Restaurant & Cocktail. The address is missing from the next couple of CDs, but it reappears as The Rogue in 1963, and becomes The Red Rogue by 1967. It's still The Red Rogue in 1973. The 1987 entry just says Stud. It now seems to be a gay bar called Faultline. I'm guessing that Stud may also have been a gay bar, but I don't know about the Rogue years. From last month's TimeOut review (it's a critics' pick): Ripe with the smell of pheromones and dried sweat, rather than the latest Gucci scent, Faultline prides itself in carrying on the tradition of the “men’s bar.” So if bellies, beards and tattoos make the man for you, then program your GPS for Faultline. |
