We've had several mentions of the 'Brass Rail' at 334 S. Hill St.

...but have we seen Perry's Brass Rail in Hollywood?

below: I found this in the 1936 directory; but I'm not sure if this is Perry's.

Soooooo....what building, near Hollywood and Vine, housed Perry's Brass Rail?

As long as I'm asking questions ;)......
Does anyone familiar with the Monterey Park area recognize this community church?

(perhaps the highway signs at far left offer a clue to it's location)

Another, older view. Looks like it's long gone-- apparently 60/70/99 ran along Garvey Avenue in the late '30s. So I'm going to say that the church was at the NW corner of Garvey & Baltimore. Here is the corner today--this may be true of a million corners, but note how the street still rises to meet the very corner, sloping off down the streets toward the drains on each side....

Cute detailing on the suit but the athletic socks were a poor choice. Shoulda gone with peds.

I'm not sure, but I believe the ship is the S.S. Los Angeles.

I just found this photograph of the S.S. Los Angeles. Same ship? -it only makes sense.

I don't think those are socks MR....they're 'booties'.

Here's something I wasn't aware of....

Disneyland had a Hill's Bros. 'Coffee Garden' in the Town Square, circa 1959.

So where in the Town Square was this located? I can't picture it at all.

ER & GW, my family moved to Monterey Park in 1954, and my wife's family settled there in 1947. Neither of us have any recollection of the Community Church (or any other frame residential structure) on Garvey Ave. My recollection of the site at the NW corner of Garvey and Baltimore in the 1960s is that it was a Wilshire Oil service station. Sorry that I can't be more precise.

When I went there in 1956 it was the Maxwell House Coffee shop. A year or two later Hill's Bros had taken over the franchise. I remember it because my mother and aunt would wait for us there while my brother, our cousin and I went around doing kid things.

:previous: This building still has an interesting 1950s (40?) bar facade, with the curved glass blocks on either side of the entrance.
Does anyone know if this was, in fact, a former bar?

__

E_R, that building was indeed a bar, at least in the 1970's. My dad used to have a business further west on Melrose and I would pass by it 2-3 times a week. Back then, the entire facade was painted flat charcoal black, the name or logo of the bar was at one time painted red, if I recall correctly...then later, maybe it had a silver dollar ("Silver Dollar Saloon"?) but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the place...I do remember hearing the loud music that played...you could hear it as you drove past...

And Hudsons pulling freight cars. (Could this have also contributed to the demise of rail? :P)

The building in question appears to be 4216 Melrose Avenue. I found a build date of 1947 on sfrealtors.com.

The 1956 CD lists it as Petta's Italian Restaurant and Stein's Restaurant & Cocktail. The address is missing from the next couple of CDs, but it reappears as The Rogue in 1963, and becomes The Red Rogue by 1967. It's still The Red Rogue in 1973. The 1987 entry just says Stud.

It now seems to be a gay bar called Faultline. I'm guessing that Stud may also have been a gay bar, but I don't know about the Rogue years. From last month's TimeOut review (it's a critics' pick):

Ripe with the smell of pheromones and dried sweat, rather than the latest Gucci scent, Faultline prides itself in carrying on the tradition of the “men’s bar.” So if bellies, beards and tattoos make the man for you, then program your GPS for Faultline.

I think the 1948 aerial on the left shows the community church. It's gone by 1952. The lot then stays fairly empty until the current building shows up on the 2003 image.

I believe the 'Chief' on the ground is Daniel Simmons, better known in film circles as Chief Yowlachie.
