sopas ej, I posted a quiz about this very topic back on page 1914, It was, at length, correctly answered by HossC on page 1917.

Interesting history lesson. Thanks. Indeed, can you imagine wearing a high starched collar in D.C. in the Summer? Whew.

I have a lot of interesting stuff on things like this in my blog on the 1920s and 1930s, decades I find interesting. Check it out. It is seen on this topic site, "Found City Photos". It will never have even remotely the number of visitors of this wonderful blog on noirish L.A., but I enjoy doing it even if nobody checked it out. Lots of good topics and YouTube vids of the era along with my comments. I will start posting new topics soon, but have been preoccupied with family matters.

Lorendoc, about the two-way traffic on Santa Monica Blvd.: Your post, HERE, you mentioned that HossC responded to, references two photos, one from 1933 that shows two-way traffic on each side, and one from 1950 that does not.

This came up again because of the "Double Standard" photo from 1963-64 and if that stretch had two-way traffic at that particular time. We can't see the entire area in that photo, but the SMB road we can see has a double line painted down the center of it which wouldn't make sense if it wasn't two-way traffic on that side at least, would it? (We can't see the other side, but I noticed that there seems to be head-in parking in the center which I'd never noticed there in any other photos of that area.)

The New Yorker has posted an interesting piece re Dennis Hopper's iconic "Double Standard" photo.... https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cu...ht-los-angeles

The article re-dates the image to '63/'64, replacing Hopper's recollection of 1961.
_________________________________________________________________

The only other photo around those years I've seen, that I posted once, is this one originally posted on Vintage Los Angeles with only this notation as to the date: Dan Tana's is only HALF the size in this photo leading me to believe this was taken around 1965. The lanes do not have double lines down the center.

https://www.lamag.com/wp-content/upl.../dantanas6.jpg
[Click photo for a larger size.]

L.A. Magazine posted the photo in an article, dating it 1964.

It's logical to assume that whatever is shown on the left side of the Double Standard photo was after these tracks were removed and could also date that photo specifically to 1964 or even 1965, depending on several things.

A brief treatise on men's collars

Hoover gave up his stiff starched detachable collars sometime between losing to FDR in 1932, and chairing the government reorganization committee in the early 1950s when I have seen pictures of him with comfortable modern attached business collars as part of his shirt. Modern attached collars in dress business shirts appeared at least as early as the mid 1920s (Arrow shirts with attached collars), but some like Hoover kept wearing the uncomfortable high starched collars. At some point, Hoover choose comfort. His collars must have been so uncomfortable in Washington summers. The military and most workingmen and people at leisure had been wearing shirts with attached unstarched collars that looked modern as early as 1900, since it was an annoyance to attach the starched collars plus they were uncomfortable. Imagine being under fire and having to attach a collar in a battle. In dress uniforms, formal attached collars may still have been used, not sure. Most businessmen and politicians kept their old starched detachable collars on until the mid 1920s. When they left work and got home, they usually removed the collars which were attached to the shirt by fasteners, especially in hot weather. The shirts without the collars resembled a t-shirt with long sleeves (short sleeve dress shirts didn't appear until the 1930s, although short sleeve undershirts and polo shirts existed in the 1920s--men just rolled up their sleeves in hot weather). In photos of the 1925 Scopes Trial, both Bryan and Darrow removed their collars even in court because it was so hot. Pictures exist. In the many photos of the 1920s I have seen, it seems that by 1927 or 1928, modern collars were becoming dominant, tuxedo wing collars and high Hoover collars less common except in the most formal settings. By 1929, most of the traders on the floor of the stock exchange appeared to be wearing modern attached collars and business suits in pictures I have seen of the Great Crash. But Hoover persisted with his high collars long after. And tuxedo suits with wing collars are still rented and worn in formal settings like weddings, formal proms and parties, and diplomatic events...tradition. Mercifully, stiff starched high "Hoover" collars have gone to collar heaven...or hell, never to torture men again on hot sweaty days.

How cool is that? :)

Here's an exceptional OOAK (one of a kind) photograph.

"LOS ANGELES 1901 Original Photo WELL DRILLING EQPT STORE Third Street California"

eBay

From the seller:

"1901 Original (one-of-a-kind) uncaptioned gelatin silver sepia-toned amateur photograph.

~ in the background is a 1-story "deep" store with signage: "Pacific Agent, Kelly Taneyhill & Woodruff Co. Well Drilling Machinery...Pumps, Tanks, Tools, Pipe, Windmills" ~ in the foreground a teamster is bending over tending to something beneath his 4-horse team wagon that is loaded with supplies; a smaller, empty wagon is behind this one, and there are dual railroad (trolley line?) tracks in the foreground ~ in a search of Los Angeles Herald online archives, I found multiple advertising references to Kelly Taneyhill & Woodruff Co, located at 268 Los Angeles Street - at the corner of "Third & Los Angeles Streets" - all articles were dated 1901
"

Very interesting.

I'd say the key clue is 'Pacific'. Unless I'm mistaken, the apartments on the right are named Pacific Apartment. (of course there's also the Pacific Market down the street)

Also the Marina Sports Center. That must be in some old phone book. Could this be near Marina del Rey? When was that constructed?

________________

Concur enough with CaliNative that I'll climb out on a limb and state my belief that the photographer is standing with his (likely) back to Valley Blvd. (note the billboards halfway up the right edge of the frame) just beyond Eastern Ave. and is shooting northeasterly across the SP Sunset Route main line (note the signal bridge halfway up the left edge of the frame) and across Alhambra Ave. (note the low white posts for the guard rail) toward the low buildings at the bottom of the knoll in the center of the image.

I'm not sure what the photographer was trying to capture, let alone why. Santa Fe wines were popular in L.A. back in the day, but there doesn't seem to be anything more solid than labels for sale on-line. I wasn't able to turn up a "Dee" commercial reference in the neighborhood via the CD. But the railroad location with respect to streets and the knoll look to me to be about as definitive as I can get. As near as I can make out the license plates on the cars in the "Dee" lot, the image seems to date from about 1941.

Further thoughts?

I want to say I recall a "Dee-Lite" ice cream warehouse/factory somewhere off the 101 near the 5/10 interchange in the 1970's when I was a kid.

Now I want to know if the statue (that appears in the 1920s snapshot) is still in place.

Whomst could possibly live in the area? Perchance a person known as myself? Could be!

Here's the results of my surveillance mission. The statue in question no longer resides in the courtyard. Instead there's an odd fountain. (Disregard the young woman in black, facing away from the camera.)

https://i.postimg.cc/YkvT40Lz/Fountain-1.jpg

The curious fountain appears to be a figure of a tyke dressed as a firefighter, with a trickle of water continuously flowing from the firehose he's holding.

https://i.postimg.cc/TYqtXZ7C/Fountain-2.jpg

(At first glance I thought it was one of those "peeing cherub" statues. Couldn't quite figure out what it was supposed to be until I got home and examined the photo I took.)

I think the first letter of the second word in the name, barely visible behind the double billboard is "O."

Also, is that a round "Polly Gas" sign by the road in the distance?

Cheers,

Earl
