An obscure movie studio and two large 'mystery' buildings in the background(s). (building two is in the second photograph)

When I looked at this photograph as a thumbnail I thought the bulding in the background was the old Stimson Mansion at 2421 S Figueroa St.

But this is a 1917 image of Bernstein Studios at 753 Boyle Avenue. (just southeast of the recently discussed Hollenbeck Home)

This view appears to be looking more in the direction of the Hollenbeck Home (a wild guess on my part), yet the large building on the right doesn't match the Hollenbeck.

I wasn't able to find it in any of the directories. (except for one mention of the BernStein Film Office at 606 South Hill, rm. 1103

The two photographs appear in Marc Wanamaker's 'Early Poverty Row Studios'

I always thought poverty row studios were located on, or near, Gower Street. - with the 'row' in 'poverty row' meaning Gower Street....a.k.a. 'Gower Gulch'.

I hope one of you fine sleuths can help me out with all these questions.

Well shit, I just noticed google-earth took me to 753 South Boyle Ave. (I hope that doesn't matter)

Here's a much clearer black and white picture showing that it was lots of light bulbs rather than neon. It looks like their biggest worry was cyclists!

The current building at 8200 Sunset (Pinches Tacos) has a modified roofline, and there's now a covered area which blocks some of the frontage, but it seems to retain the zig-zag across the full width (minus the light bulbs). The low pink wall on the right may be original.

What was that amazing and beautiful survivor at the right of the Municipal Water & Power ? Six stories for that old style is unexpected to me. I'd like to see a photo of it.

Subtle color blending of the interior space was designed to create an “atmosphere of spaciousness and relaxation.” Interestingly, the palette was much richer and more colorful than the white sometimes associated with Modern design. Rather, it followed in the footsteps of Le Corbusier's harmonic color concepts. The exteriors were rich in color, and the interior of each house had a color scheme matching its exterior color. All rooms used this color scheme, and each wall was a different shade of the theme color."

I was looking at the interesting links you posted for this housing tract, E_R. The info above says the exteriors were rich in color, but if someone asked me to show them what Dark Red, Light Blue or Dark Green colors looked like, for example, these are not the colors I'd have come up with that Plochere has listed:

Dark Red:

Light Blue:

Absolutely! Cocktails on the house at the Firefly!

Some more about the PAN-GAS sign in my old post here

Let's not forget that for the majority of its life it had a big orange 76 ball—

—which you can read about here.

Anyway, on an unrelated but similarly downtowny note, this slide was recently for sale on eBay. Thought y'all would enjoy it as it features some usual suspects.

That's such a FANTISTIC slide Beaudry. :previous: Thanks for sharing it with us.

I couldn't help but notice the little roof-top 'patio' with the table and blue formica chairs in the lower right corner of Beaudry's slide.

I'm curious about the tall skinny poles and wiring surrounding the lounge area.

If I didn't know better I'd say they were planning on growing grapes.

noirish looking bars from the movie 'Barfly'

Virtually all of the signs are in Spanish, so the bar was probably in a mostly Mexican-populated part of town.

If you combine the two signs in the above photo, they appear to say "Alvarado Clothing":

The address on one of the doorways appears to say "738", unfortunately it's partially obscured and hard to read. It might also say "7368"?

I found an address for an Oasis Bar at 736 S. Alvarado.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/zfd75C.jpg

but the bar appears to have been replaced by the building shown below.

The second mystery location.

https://i.imgur.com/vGWLtwyl.jpg

I found an address for a "Catalino Bar & Grill Seafood" at 1640 Cahuenga Blvd. [1987 City Directory]

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/zBXXxh.jpg

Here's 1640 Cahuenga today.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/OCJpBp.jpg

But I'm not entirely sure this is the correct place.

The Catalina in Scott Charles' 1987 photo doesn't appear to be concerned with FOOD. (the listing in the directory emphasizes GRILL and SEAFOOD)

If you look closely at the 1987 Catalina photo..it's quite clear the bar was more concerned with.....

;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

p.s. The only Yoshiko's I found was "Yoshiko's Sample Service" at 405 S. Los Angeles Street in the 1973 city directory.

Thanks, ER! However, HossC already revealed this location on the previous page of this thread.

Your second discovery is very interesting, however.

I checked out the "time travel" feature on Google street view and found this street view from 2007:

https://i.imgur.com/LTY8Wcb.jpgGSV

This looks a LOT more like the screencap from Barfly. But upon closer inspection, nothing matches perfectly: Barfly has bricks whereas Google shows stones; the tree is in a different location, and the species is different; the placement of the windows doesn't match, nor does the placement of the doors.

I actually went to the Catalina Bar and Grill way back in 1987 - I saw Dizzy Gillespie perform there, and got to speak to him after the show. Dizzy's appearance was apparently responsible for putting the Catalina on the map as a serious jazz venue.

BUT - 1987 was the same year that Barfly was filmed. Articles like this one and this one say that the owner, Bob Popescu, named the new bar and grill after his wife, Catalina Catalui, so the name "Catalina" certainly does not predate 1986 (the year that the Catalina opened).

Popescu and his wife were trying to establish a classy bar and grill jazz joint. It seems highly unlikely that this would lead to having signs that described the place as being almost a titty bar - nor is it likely that one would name said almost-titty bar after your wife and co-owner.

In addition, the "Catalina" sign is neon. This seems unlikely for a new bar in 1987, as neon signs were largely replaced by more energy efficient signs during the early 1970s. To make matters worse, there is no mention, at any time, of anything relating to "Yoshiko".

Going by all of this, I would have to conclude that the Catalina from Barfly is not the same as the Catalina at 1640 Cahuenga. I don't know if I'll ever find out where the Catalina was located. :(

- - -

By the way, has this ever happened on Noirish LA before? That a business, clearly photographed, existing until at least 1987, with name clearly visible, simply cannot be located?

I don't know exactly where that bar is, but I swear that I've seen it and I think it may have been in Koreatown, possibly on 8th. No evidence, but it looks really familiar.

Yes ! Thanks. The top and the top windows look 1880s. The rest 1910's. What the architect had in mind ? The Hall of Records showed a similar discrepancy : old on the high and modern lower. I would expect the other way around according to the sequence of works.
By the way, interesting view on Second street.

Hey, Bill!

I scooted around in the Googlemobile on 8th, and couldn't find it. Maybe poor detective work on my part, or the building may have changed, torn down, or perhaps was never there... I did a similar Google drive down Beverly, Third, and Sixth, and while I couldn't locate the Catalina, I did find some interesting buildings...

I searched this thread for "Dover", and didn't find the Dover Apartments, 4649 Beverly Blvd:

Great old Texaco Station! I now see that it has been made into a coffee shop (Not a Starbucks) It is the "Full Service Coffee Company" . It was originally built in 1941 and closed as a gas station in 1965. After that , they sold used cars there. it is supposed to open in June as a coffee shop. Aside from the building in the back being turned into bathrooms it will supposedly remain mostly the same. Yay!!

Denis Freppel [1987] 1331 W. B Street, cnr. Figueroa Street, Wilmington CA.

We have seen Shipwreck Joey's in the past but I believe this Freppel photograph is new to nla.

Back in 2013 Chuckaluck posted a John Humble photograph of Shipwreck Joey's, as well as images from 'To Live & Die In L.A.' and 'The Fight Club'
& HossC added a vintage aerial and some links. (in the same post)

This is from one of Hoss' links:

""Shipwreck Joey's was built as a drive-in restaurant, the Bayview, in the late 1930s,
and its semi-circular construction from those days remains. The restaurant's bay windows, however,
have been boarded up and painted over in Joey's signature red-orange decor."
LATIMES

Unless I'm mistaken, we weren't able to find any photographs of the building when it was the Bayview Drive-In.

Let's find a photograph of the Bayview Drive-In!

GO!

If you missed the SSP link above, HERE it is again. (I aim to please :))

As I mentioned a page or two back, the movie Barfly (1987) begins and ends with a montage sequence of divey bars. The two below are the only ones I couldn't identify.

Every other bar in the montage is either in downtown, Hollywood, or somewhere in-between. Click on the image below to see it full-sized.

Scott,
I haven't seen "Barfly" for many years but remember a bar called the "Kenmore" appearing in it. Back in the pre-internet days I drove up and down Kenmore Avenue fully expecting to find it but never did. Were you able to locate that one?
