These look great! They remind me of the original concept for the new BART cars before they got so watered down, which is pretty much par for the course here in the US. I've made the comment before that the old BART cars designed in the 60s actually seem more modern than the new ones.
Anyways, you can can always count on Sweden to be successful when it comes to good design, so congrats! |
I guess the drivers won't have to wear short shorts with those trains.

I'm a bit surprised the design has actually improved through the process. The paint job is better now than at first; cleaner and more like the current generation of commuter trains. makes me wonder if they'll re-paint the C20 trains to look like this too when those get a mid-life renovation in the next few years - I'll ask SL if that's what's going to happen! :)

A couple of films showing the planned 4-tracking of Mälarbanan (the line going from Stockholm to the northwest (towards Västerås & Oslo) from Huvudsta-Duvbo (i.e. through the City of Sundbyberg and parts of the City of Solna. Since the right of way is too narrow for part of the stretch it'll be lowered into a tunnel for that bit, including Sundbyberg Station. This bit is at the heart of the Sundbyberg downtown area and will be amazing since the railway now cuts that area in half.

The C20 subway cars that entered service around 2000 will now get a mid-life renovation. Starting in 2019 it'll be 9 cars at a time getting renovated until it's all done in 2022. This is made possible by the delivery of the new C30 cars (so that there won't be a shortage of cars).
Cost: 1.3 billion SEK New interior layout with more open space and about 1/8 less seats. New doors. New info system with info screens in the cars. New CCTV equipment. Modernized drivers cabin. Alco-lock for the drivers. and new seats, of course. Stockholm's subway is going to see some significant expansions soon. First is a major extension of the Blue line and a small new branch to the Green line. Those are pretty much all decided and funded. No construction yet though. After that it's looking like there'll be a new line that'll have a connection to the Red line i.e. some trains will run partly on one the the Red branches.

Note that the dark blue bit in the south is a currently existing Green branch that will be transferred to being on the Blue line. Two stations (Globen & Enskede Gård) will be closed and replaced by one new one (Slakthusområdet). This transfer of a branch from the Green to the Blue line has been part of long-term plans for decades and is finally happening. It'll make the Green line run better (two branches will be easier to run reliably than three) and give the new bit of the Blue line many instant passengers. I live on this branch and am looking forward to it since it'll mean more frequent service and more even intervals between trains. The small new bit of Blue line in the north is to serve a new district under construction on an old airbase as well as to connect to the commuter rail at Barkarby Station. The Yellow branch of the Green line will be a western branch, i.e. the tracks will branch of westwards before turning north, so trains can not run from that new branch to the existing western part of the line. The map is actually incorrect here: there'll be one more station on this branch. Between Hagastaden and Arenastaden there'll be a station Hagalund. There'll be space on the tracks for more trains than just that little line demands so a connection to the Red line will be made that'll allow for some trains fromthe southwestern Red branch to go to Fridhemsplan instead of via the central station towards the northeast. No intermediary station between Liljeholmen and Fridhemsplan is planned. Which is strange since the distance is quite long. One or even two stations would make sense. |

GAH! Get a long-term plan already! Obviously there are no new long-term plans since the 60s. The yellow branch ought to be a full new 4th subway line that should include most of the new Red line. Though IMO it ought to not do that huge sharp western bend and instead go straight under the inner city with new transfer stations to all the other lines (and commuter rail) on it's way. This would line up pretty nicely and create a line that would alter the hub-and-spoke set up of the network far more than the current plans. here's how I'd do it (with some more ideas for other rail infra extensions added: https://www.google.se/maps/@59.32104...tCnqOl8IqwobEo I'm not doubting the actual professional planners (that much). I'm just seeing so many small fairly short-term deals made by politicians that sabotage good things coming from this. |
As part of the same funding package as the new Red line branches there's two more major investments in rail transit that are now practiacally decided on.
First is that Roslagsbanan (the narrow gauge railway getting new cars just a few posts above this post) will be getting a new tunnel running from Universitetet to Centralen via Odenplan. I.e. the current city-end terminal will close permanently (and the land there redeveloped with mostly residentials) and be replaced with a tunnel that goes a very different route and that reaches all the way to Sweden's main transit hub. Cost: 7.1G SEK As part of the deal the City of Stockholm commits to building 500 residential units (yes 500. not 5 000 or 50 000. 500.). Vallentuna municipality 5 650, Österåker municipality 7 020 & Täby municipality 16 200. An LRT line connecting suburbs on the Red Line subway and on the commuter rail line to Södertälje. A further extension eastwards from Älcjö to Skarpnäck or even to Älta or Värmdö have been talked about for years already and has large local political support in those areas. Will likely use the same cars, signalling, etc. as the current LRT line Tvärbanan. Even though no connection is currently planned. Such a connection has been suggested by politicians though and in the long term I think it'll get built. The first of the new C30 subway cars has left the factory. It'll go through testing down on the continent til the end of the year and arrive up here at around newyears. For more local testing before being put into service. The whole batch of 96 cars will be delivered by 2021.

Citybanan will open in just 3 days! I remember when it was still a hotly debated plan with the then right-wing government de-funding it before protests from the whole region got too loud.

Citybanan is now OPEN! Has been for a couple of weeks, even.
(not mine) I've used it twice and passed through it twice. Looks good and IMO easy to navigate. The signage needs some improvement at the platform level though 1) point you to where a short train is along the platform (looong platforms) and 2) tell you when a train is leaving as well as if it is at the station (the trains usually wait a few minutes at City just like they did before at Centralen). Plus, I didn't see any screens for showing the load in each section of the train, which has been tested for a year or so at at least one other station and worked very well). Along with the new stations they're changed the signage at the whole T-Centralen / City station. Currently the central bit of the Red subway line is out of service. Started a couple of weeks ago (right after Citybanan opened) and will open again tomorrow (is the plan). The reason is that the subway bridge between Slussen and Old town needs work done. That bridge is soon 70 years old and has 5 subway track (4 in regular use for the Red and Green lines) so it needs a lot of love by now.
As for other projects around town... The #7 tram extension to T-Centralen is slowly moving ahead. No track layed but the track beds are mostly in place since they've been installed as the street they're on has been renovated (it sits on a 1+ level concrete structure). Should open within a couple of years and will be pretty awesome. The Blue subway line extension is starting to see some site-prep out in Nacka. Tvärbanan... no real news. So I guess that might be a good thing? No delays of the re-opening announced, at least. 2017-10-01 for the whole line with the newer Solna branch opening before then in august iirc (with 2 stations from the old part joining in at that time too, first through-traffic between the original part and the newish "branch"). Afaik the brand new part to Sickla Station (interchange with Saltsjöbanan) will open on 2017-10-01 too. Having that added and through-traffic for the whole line and beign able to run more frequent trams then before... it'll be like a whole new beast. |
