I heard that Artful Dodger is moving into the old World of Trout location on 11th (space that I thought O'Hanlon was planning to open a pub). Anyone else hear this?

jigglysquishy Dec 15, 2017 10:22 PM

I've been hearing they're moving onto Scarth Street

StealthGirl Dec 16, 2017 4:24 AM

Closing down. Will be opening something else later but location not disclosed yet.

In the Scarth Street Mall, yes.

I've heard that's not final. And their ridiculous fundraising fell flat.

Yes, they aren't going into Scarth St.

So, there may be something to the rumour I heard? Last time I walked by the old WoT, there appeared to be construction materials inside, but no one working at the time. Anyone hear if O'Hanlon is still hoping to open something there?

Also? GoFundMe for Artful Dodger? Really? If you're looking for donations to your for-profit business, the only way I'm tossing money your way is if I get a proportional ownership stake. If they were a non-profit, it's a different story (though, I still think the request is a long-shot).

I haven't really seen any work at the WoT building fro the last couple months, so maybe? It's all a bit odd.

Any truth to the rumor I heard that Olive Garden is coming to Harbor Landing in the building attached to DSW where Brown's Socialhouse was listed for a while?

I heard from a reliable source it is a done deal.

Cool. That part of the building didn't have its flooring poured yet as of the Fall but after that gets done it should be a fairly quick handover. Solid win for H.L. area, which hasn't had a lot of big name places move in despite lots of new commercial spaces..

BrutallyDishonest2 Dec 19, 2017 11:12 PM

Olive Garden is apparently going in Grasslands but they'll be building a standalone site. The Brown's space is about half the size they need.

Yay! We finally have a nearly mediocre pasta place in Regina!

I wondered... Brown’s space is pretty small.

Would fit a pub (e.g.: a big Leo’s), but is smaller than I’d expect for most full-service restaurants.

The new place in the former Flip on Hamilton will be called Soju Bar and Lounge.

sastaunik44 Dec 28, 2017 8:47 PM

Awesome, cant wait for Olive Garden!!!

What do you guys feel will be the next "big" business that shuts its doors?

I've been there a few times and didn't mind it (though I thought it was a little expensive for being what is effectively a re-themed Burger King), but I've also heard they've had a few health and safety issues (under-cooked chicken that has caused food poisoning more than once) that would have spread via word of mouth.

Two issues in July, addressed in August follow-up.

Tony Roma's and The Nest. Somebody will probably come along and develop the site into another small commercial development.

Oooh! Maybe someone can develop a big, long gas bar and car wash along that side of Albert too.

Eh, it's not like the latest South Albert strip mall is doing that well...

The Press Box may be the next to go. Their rent is being increased and the current owners are strongly considering selling or even moving to the old Famoso location on Rochdale. I honestly don’t see either happening.

someguy Jan 8, 2018 11:09 PM

PressBox is currently listed for sale. I am surprised how long that place has been open. It's been moldy and smelly in there since they first opened, and the location is terrible.

Famoso on Rochdale closed already?

Press box was one of the better sports bars on the city. Atrocious location though

It has nothing to do with their rent going up. They just aren't making money.

My source was someone close to the business but you are probably right. Some people just don't want to admit that they have failed and try to pull a Trump by blaming something/someone else.

Trying to recall one of the first Thai restaurants I ever went to in the mid 80s. It was on the west side of Broad Street between 7th and 8th Ave. And wasn't there a computer store in that same mall that sold Apple products (Apple IIe, III and early Macs)?

Da Lat By Nite.

It burnt down about 10 years ago and took the whole mall with it.

I think you're right but the name Da Lat by Nite doesn't ring a bell so I wonder if that with a new owner but same cuisine. Do you recall if there a computer store in that same mall?

I think it was called something before it was called Da Lat but I can't remember that far back.

The computer store? Yeah I used to go there to buy Windows 3.1 based games. I forget what it was called... Computex or Innotex or some 1980's type computer store name.

They are doing a big reno of the main floor of City Hall. Part of that is moving the location of their cafeteria so that it has its own entrance. After the reno is done they will have a vendor to run the cafeteria, it certainly could be a new vendor with a different menu etc.

More licensed stores that we can earn Starpoints at, but still only one store in the city that we can redeem points at. fun:uhh:

(I'm waiting for a full, corporate-owned location to open in White City/Emerald Park... it's gotta happen, SB giving the old one-finger salute to the LRB;))

Ru Lounge (old Flip) looks like it should be open soon.

Dale MacKay’s restaurant in the old Malt City will be called Avenue. They had their first pop up in the space a little while ago and it sounds like it was a hit. I believe there are two more scheduled before the official opening this summer.

I talked to someone who went to a soft opening the other day of Ru. He said it will be much more jazzy than Flip. He said food was good. He described it as sushi and more. He said it would be open in a few weeks.

curo Feb 1, 2018 10:09 PM

Does anybody know what is going in the old Jysk beside Leo's East? There was a rumour floating around for awhile that Creekside Restaurant was moving there.
