:previous:-interesting posts Martin_Pal & HossC.

I found this in an old file of mine, originally from eBay.

I was hoping to find out the location of this home (to see if it's still standing), but I can't quite make out the family name. Schurig? Schuring? Schurugs? Schunig?

Here's the largest scan. -maybe someone with super vision can make out the street number on the porch.

Any idea what the workmen are doing at the bend in the track?

__

Looks like a track gang waiting for the 1373 to clear the station before resuming work nearby. Since they seem to be looking and pointing at a specific location they may be watching the trucks on the car as they pass over a section of track that recently received maintenance or may be in need of maintenance. In railroad parlance the observation of a passing train by railroaders on the ground is known as a rollby and is performed as a safety check on a passing train.

As to "Los Angeles Electrical Exposition 1936." Nice gams on the light bulb!

Cheers,
Jack

Thanks for the information on a 'rollby' Jack -very cool. I'm sure you're one of the few people who know this term.

I don't recall seeing this 'Life Guard Headquarters' on NLA.

-so where exactly was this located?

The lifeguard headquarters appears to have been located on Sunset Pier in Venice, a few blocks south of the main Venice Amusement Pier. It was opposite the end of what is now Venice Boulevard. The picture below, dated 1946, is the only one I've located so far, and comes from an article about the history of the Sunset Pier on www.westland.net. The article claims that the lifeguard headquarters remained there until November 1965, and that the pier, which had a distinctive 45 degree bend, was demolished shortly afterwards.

www.westland.net

I was just about to hit "Submit Reply" when I decided to check Historic Aerials. The 1952 and 1963 images are quite similar, but the 1963 image (below) is a little clearer. The westland.net article mentions that the beach was widened in 1947 and that the Sunset Pier became land-locked. It looks like most of the pier was demolished before 1952, and only the elevated lifeguard headquarters in the middle of the beach stayed on until the mid-60s.

ok, refresh my memory about the pyramid (sort of) shaped tower on the hill.
I don't remember discussing it before.

To me it looks like a fire lookout with a bell....so what fire department was up there in 1888?

I still haven't found a better picture of the lifeguard headquarters, but I did come across this 1940 aerial which shows the two Venice piers. The Sunset Pier is the one on the right. This was before the beach widening (just to prove it wasn't always land-locked), and shows the 45 degree bend in the Sunset Pier. I've arrowed the location of the lifeguard's building. USC also have a 1933 aerial of the same area, but the buildings on the pier look different. At one point there was a ballroom on the end of the Sunset Pier, and I think it was extended before it was demolished.

I went through all the censuses in that period (1900- 1920) and all the voter registrations, and while I came up with about 15 people who had names with that combination of letters "schur**g" and various addresses for those persons, I did not find any of the addresses which had a house that even remotely resembled the one in the picture. It is probably gone or remodeled beyond recognition. A couple of the addresses were lost to freeways. Sorry.

There's a zoomable version of the picture at USC which gives a little more detail. The sign on the left says "Adele California", while the one on the right says "Morris Nagel Versatogs". Both were apparently clothing companies. The Versatogs building has the number 2609. According to the CDs, Morris Nagel had a clothing store at 818 S Broadway in the '30s and '40s, but there's no mention of another building. I also found a 1949 advert for Versatogs on coutureallure.com's blog, but no address was given.

UPDATE: I've found the advert below in a 1946 issue of 'The Californian' on archive.org. It gives the address of Adele California as 2615 South Hill Street, so that would make Versatogs' address 2609 South Hill Street.

Here are the buildings today. The building at 2621 South Hill Street (just off the left of the picture below) shares the design of these two.

I see in the above 'now' photo the 'banana leaf' metal trellis has survive (far right on the orange and tan bldg.)

I found these four 1918 glass negatives not too long ago on eBay. On my old computer changing a negative image to a positive image was so simple, just a click of a button. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it but with my brand new computer I've yet to figure out how to do it.(window 8.1) I've looked and looked and found all kinds of editing tools except to turn reverse negative images.
