:previous:-interesting posts Martin_Pal & HossC.
I found this in an old file of mine, originally from eBay. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...540/Yic9E0.jpg I was hoping to find out the location of this home (to see if it's still standing), but I can't quite make out the family name. Schurig? Schuring? Schurugs? Schunig? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...538/iXI65q.png Here's the largest scan. -maybe someone with super vision can make out the street number on the porch. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/540/Yic9E0.jpg eBay __ |

I found this earlier this evening on eBay.
"Bus Stop 1959" http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/Z1DsTA.jpg -obviously we're looking east on Hollywood Blvd. toward Vine Street. __ |
I don't recall seeing this 'Life Guard Headquarters' on NLA.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/674/xpE9To.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Old-Cars-LIF...item5d52f2475b -so where exactly was this located? __ |
:previous:
The lifeguard headquarters appears to have been located on Sunset Pier in Venice, a few blocks south of the main Venice Amusement Pier. It was opposite the end of what is now Venice Boulevard. The picture below, dated 1946, is the only one I've located so far, and comes from an article about the history of the Sunset Pier on www.westland.net. The article claims that the lifeguard headquarters remained there until November 1965, and that the pier, which had a distinctive 45 degree bend, was demolished shortly afterwards. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...SunsetPier.jpg www.westland.net I was just about to hit "Submit Reply" when I decided to check Historic Aerials. The 1952 and 1963 images are quite similar, but the 1963 image (below) is a little clearer. The westland.net article mentions that the beach was widened in 1947 and that the Sunset Pier became land-locked. It looks like most of the pier was demolished before 1952, and only the elevated lifeguard headquarters in the middle of the beach stayed on until the mid-60s. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...unsetPier2.jpg Historic Aerials |
:previous: -thanks for locating the life guard hq HossC. I really like that aerial. (land-locked indeed)
Looking west on 1st street from Spring, circa 1888-9 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/903/qQt4Um.jpg RTC / http://memoriastoica.tumblr.com/post/60972263818 ok, refresh my memory about the pyramid (sort of) shaped tower on the hill. I don't remember discussing it before. To me it looks like a fire lookout with a bell....so what fire department was up there in 1888? __ |
Here's another...
Third street hill before Angels Flight. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/HF5qhA.jpg RTC / http://memoriastoica.tumblr.com/post/60972263818 Third st. west of Spring, circa 188 I like the man walking with his two young children on the right. -and the boy running his hand along the grass.. (there's a good possibility we've seen this before on NLA...but what the heck) __ |
I searched the thread for 'Adele' and 'Versatogs' and nothing came up....so here's another photograph taken somewhere in Los Angeles (for some reason I'm leaning towards Westwood)
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/633/K3eWSR.jpg old file of mine. possibly http://memoriastoica.tumblr.com/tagg...ngeles+history I'm dying to do a before and after (if it's still standing of course :)) __ |

UPDATE: I've found the advert below in a 1946 issue of 'The Californian' on archive.org. It gives the address of Adele California as 2615 South Hill Street, so that would make Versatogs' address 2609 South Hill Street. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...LA/LAAdele.jpg archive.org Here are the buildings today. The building at 2621 South Hill Street (just off the left of the picture below) shares the design of these two. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...Versatogs2.jpg GSV |
:previous: I had to run out to the grocery store, and when I came back I found all this great information waiting for me. -so cool....way to go HossC :)
I see in the above 'now' photo the 'banana leaf' metal trellis has survive (far right on the orange and tan bldg.) ...and I'm not a bit jealous you got to do the 'before and after' instead of me. ;) __ and thanks for trying to find the Schur**g house oldstuff. -much appreciated. |

I found these four 1918 glass negatives not too long ago on eBay. On my old computer changing a negative image to a positive image was so simple, just a click of a button. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it but with my brand new computer I've yet to figure out how to do it.(window 8.1) I've looked and looked and found all kinds of editing tools except to turn reverse negative images.
