Spruce Street is short road that is west of 110 freeway (at the time the Figueroa route), in the Radio Hill area.

Glad you noticed this. I wondered about it and in my haste went to the source notes. Unfortunately, despite the best of intentions, photo subjects, locations and dates are often misidentified. This makes multiple posts of the same image - practically unavoidable. But we do our best. It also makes for surprises when, for example, looking for photos of the San Antonio Alamo, you discover it too, was located near the May Co. at Fairfax and Wilshire! lol

Thanks.

Unfortunately it no longer exists. Here's the site now, per Google Street View:

Do you suppose that same single window in the building next door has been open for the past 69 years?

A weekend of firsts for me.

I saw the film noir "Tension" for the very first time ever on Saturday. I thought it was a good film. Audrey Totter plays the shit out of her femme fatale role, and a very young and beautiful Cyd Charisse plays the "good girl" role with aplomb.

An Apple Pan burger (maybe) to anyone who can locate the Ralphs supermarket seen in the film, @14:51 in this clip:
Video Link

There are clues that the film is set in Culver City (plus the fact that it's an MGM production), but I'm curious to know where that Ralphs is.

sopas: After poking around a bit this morning--well, more than a bit (it's a rainy day here in NY)--I found that the Ralphs in Tension was the one at 3465 W. 6th St.... which is the well-known and still-extant Chapman Park Market. It turns out that the Chapman building on the north side of 6th between Alexandria and Kenmore was a Ralphs in 1949. On the southeast corner of 6th and Alex was the Standard station (3470 W. 6th) seen in the clip; at the southwest corner was the Chapman Park Pharmacy, which is the store that Richard Basehart manages as "Warren Quimby." (I could find no pictures of that corner showing more of the building; also, re the "COAST TO COAST" neon--I'm wondering if the pharmacy was a Rexall or part of some other national chain....)

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-a...tneoncompo.jpg

This small corner of a larger newspaper ad depicting Ralphs locations ca. 1949 (which we've seen here a few years ago when we explored the Ralphs chain extensively, but which I couldn't winnow out) shows the Chapman market with Ralphs signs that match the two sizes seen in Tension.

Above: The southwest corner of 6th and Alexandria, 1949 and 2011. Below left: The view from the Standard station seen in the movie toward the northwest corner of the interesection--note the match of the lamppost to the one in the movie screenshot above. Below right: A '70s shot toward the one-time Ralphs from the empty lot where the pharmacy once stood.

Tonight on TCM (8:00 eastern time) is a great film noir shot in various locations in Los Angeles County.

http://imageshack.us/a/img835/3594/aaguncrazy.jpg

The first robbery, famously filmed from the backseat of the getaway car, takes place in a fictional 'Hampton'.
In fact is was filmed in Los Angeles County in Montrose CA.

The second robbery was filmed in Reseda. The store that was robbed, named 'Ranchers & Growers' was actually the Reseda State Bank.

The third robbery at Armour's Meat Packing plant (located in Albuquerque in the movie) was filmed in Los Angeles proper at 2300 E. Olympic Blvd. Their getaway was filmed on Mateo Street.

After their crime spree the two 'bonnie & clyde' gangsters make their way to Los Angeles.
At one point they stop at a newstand located a 1655 North Las Palmas Ave. (it's still there!). Later they end up at Ocean Park Pier in Santa Monica.

Even though it has nothing to do with locations, I have to mention the almost surreal ending in a misty swamp.
It has to be seen to be believed!

Many of my location details came from:

Thanks for the head's up, e_r! I'll definitely have to tune in, at least in time for the third robbery and getaway, since Mateo Street is one of our SMK locations and I always love seeing them in other things. ;)

North Hollywood Railway Station -- built in 1896, photographed in 1927:

Surprisingly, the station still exists:

Even more surprising: restoration work on the station is about to begin!

Thanks E-R, like Moxie I have a personal connection to Gun Crazy having moved to Reseda when I was 9 yrs old in 1953. I (and my little brother and our best friend Steve) used to ride our bikes right past that bank on our way to Reseda Park to go swimming at the public pool. Just a little country hamlet in those days, many vegetable stands, egg farms and dirt roads. I don't think we wore shoes even one day from early June when school let out til early Septmber when we had to go back.

Well I said I'd do some more before / afters so here they are. I have a good deal more I'm still sorting through.

PLEASE give me some good suggestions through the DTLA area, the higher res the vintage pics the better.

Those before and afters are great. Nearly perfect "after" angles. While DTLA still looks great, for the most part IMO, the striking difference in activity (signage, peds, streetcars/traffic, etc.) is sad. I'm sure nearly every city in the country would be the exact same way. I just love those streetcars.

standing at 1114 Seward St. in Hollywood.

While working on the computer this afternoon, I also turned on 'The Steel Trap'.
I knew about the vintage New Orleans locations in the movie, but was completely surprised by the Los Angeles locations.
The shot of the Pacific Electric Terminal entrance (shown at the beginning & end of the movie) was great.
In one brief indoor scene you can see the entrance to the Garland Building across the street.

HunterK, your before/afters are the best I've seen so far! Many thanks for posting them here on 'noirish Los Angeles'.

Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, better and better! Wow, really good stuff! And some shady characters even. You've got a great eye for this stuff. Thanks. If you've got the time and the subject matter interests you, I'd be interested in seeing how the wholesale vegetable market looks after all these years.

Thanks so much!

Wheres the wholesale vegetable market at? Are there any before pics you'd like me to match up as well?

For all photo requests; Anything DTLA I 100% will do, outside of DTLA it's gotta be pretty cool architecturally...

Actually Hunter, as soon as I posted that I realised how unphotogenic the market is and how inappropriate it would be for the thread. There is nothing of interest architecturally and it would likely appeal only to someone who had spent any time there. Except for the newer, fancier trucks and new facades and standardized signage little will have changed. Also well out of downtown proper. For general interest here's a little film I found, made a year or two after I'd been and gone...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByJCmXEyfAk

Actually, the sweeping panorama at the end is interesting in that it shows the City Hall sitting out there pretty much all alone on the downtown 'skyline' of 1963.
