:previous: OK, I am thoroughly impressed slock!
Here's the oval. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/vqSPp0.jpg google_earth So what's there now....is that a home built on top of the old reservoir? and I've circled the rock(s) I believe the ladies were sitting on. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/ySE0P7.jpg google_earth __ update: I might have circled the wrong rock. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/ozXEkz.jpg eBay The oval doesn't line up correctly. :( _ |

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/nPkiPv.jpg eBay I just realized there's writing on back of the 'Two Ladies on a Rock' photograph/postcard. -maybe oldstuff can work her magic and find out who these two ladies were. 'Aunt Neatt(?) and Miss Felt in Calif." __ |

+++++++++++++++++++ Its possible that the old photo above has been flipped.?? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps0h5gfvq6.jpg file CD |

I think these might be the rocks. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Google Maps They're just below the Testimonial Peace Tower, but that didn't exist at the time of the postcard photo. Here's a lower angle showing the mountains. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original Google Maps |

I don't think it's been flipped. That would put the flowered-hat lady's buttons on the wrong side.

It's scary to think that these pictures from 1977 are now nearly 40 years old. Where did the time go? This is Julius Shulman's "Job 5469: The Market Place (Long Beach, Calif.), 1977".
NB. I've omitted the only black & white shot. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute With only exterior photos to go by, I can't see many changes. Here's an aerial view showing the whole complex. If you want to see which stores are there now, check out marketplacelongbeach.com. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original Google Maps |

EDIT: oops. John Maddox Roberts already pointed this out. So much for my attention to detail. |

Ladies on Rock

Can't imagine how absolutely miserable it would've been to dress like that when it's hot - even more so climbing up a rocky hill in blazing sun! |
Mutilated body found in shack behind bungalow court. [1934]
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/lSGsvT.jpg eBay below: It says the bungalow court was located at 790 1/2 E. Vernon Ave. Here's the low-down http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/azUIZN.jpg for search purposes: Jack and Rose Marie Hoepel (or Hoppel?) _ I'm pretty sure the bungalow court is gone, but there's a court across the street from that same time period. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/nQDWhB.jpg google_earth I think the 'murder' court was where the Carver Middle School soccer field is today |

On the heels of HossC's "Foot Patrol" http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=36464 is another LAPD recruiting film, "Wanted by the LAPD" (1959) http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...coll88/id/1436 Color footage features aerials of well known locales, glimpses of Academy training and forensics. Sadly, there does not appear to be an audio track. Where is William Conrad's voice when we need him?
(At approximately 12:08, police trainees pass by two women. Were they pure scenery or part of the training?) |
Afton Place, Los Angeles 2/9/34
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/ADwgcl.jpg eBay I wish we could see a bit more of the buildings. (so we could search for them;)) Afton Place is only a block long and directly south of the Hollywood Palladium. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/QLygqj.jpg google_earth here's the reverse of the photograph http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/zKNbxH.jpg |

I saw quite a few movies at the UA 6 at the Marketplace -- stuff like CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR. None of the restaurants, shops and stores listed in the current directory ring any bells. |

Even if it wasn't flipped, I think it's a better photo (looks better) that way. (With the ladies on the left, in case my meaning isn't clear.) |
Does anyone recognize this mansion?

We're back in Beverly Hills for today's Julius Shulman post. This is "Job 4512: Wallace Moir Company Building (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1969".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original I wonder how much light this unusual design let through. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original The sign just inside the entrance shows the Wallace Moir Company, Wallace Moir Insurance Agency Inc, Wallace Moir Real Estate Company and the Pacific Sun Building Company. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original The unusual design continues inside. The staggered front windows can be seen on the left. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original The last image shows one of the offices. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute The Wallace Moir Company Building was at 130 S El Camino Drive. The 2009 GSV images looks like this - I think it's probably the same structure (the stonework along the roof seems to match). http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original GSV The 2011 image shows the front covered over. In the images since then, the building has looked like this. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original GSV |
