MTA shares Interborough Express details August 18, 2023 By Ryan Schwach During an hour-long presentation, the MTA gave the public new details and updates on the planned Interborough Express, the potentially transformative railway project to connect Brooklyn and Queens. Members of the MTA’s Regional Planning group held a virtual town hall meeting on Wednesday night to share details and answer questions about the IBX, which plans to construct a new train route from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to Woodside, Queens. “The Interborough Express would provide a transformative new transit connection between Brooklyn and Queens,” said MTA Senior Vice President of Regional Planning, Michael Shiffer. The IBX, proposed in January 2022 has a $5.5 billion price tag in 2027 dollars, and according to the MTA could potentially serve 115,000 daily riders from all over the two outer boroughs. “Part of the reason why this is such an exciting project…It's an exceptionally diverse study area, as you would imagine looking at the center of Brooklyn and Queens,” said Shiffer. “You've got a very diverse population, and you've got a population that could really use the mobility that this could provide.” Shiffer says that around half a million people live within a half mile of the right of way line the IBX will be using. “Many more people will benefit from the line by transferring from subways and other local transit services such as buses and Long Island Railroad,” said Shiffer. more: https://queenseagle.com/all/2023/8/1...xpress-details https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/c...g?format=1500w A RENDERING OF A POTENTIAL LIGHT RAIL IBX TRACK. Staten Island slated to secure first new subway cars in 50 years By Catalina Gonella Published Oct 17, 2023 It’s the Staten Island Railway’s time to shine — almost. After 50 years, the MTA is rolling out new “cutting-edge cars” on the Staten Island Railway, starting with the first five R211 cars arriving in the borough on Tuesday. The cars arrived at the Clifton Maintenance Shop on Staten Island via flatbed trucks overnight. Will they be building the last 125th Street Station with the consideration that they'll build a Hudson Line Metro North Station at 125th too?

Unknown at this time, though one could assume a future 125 St M-N station will obviously be part of the planning. Internally, I believe they are also contemplating bringing it to either 116-Columbia U or 137 St due to the fact 125 St on the Seventh Av Line is on the high viaduct and thus not the most ideal candidate for an interchange station.
We'll see, for now I would be thrilled if they would commit to a Lenox Av station and boring to St. Nicholas Av for an (A)(B)(C)(D) interchange station and wait for anything further west to be part of an even more ambitious future project. If I was a betting man I would guess extending to the Eighth Av Line is the minimum and likely goal. |

Metro-North’s 130-year-old Park Avenue Viaduct set for upgrades as reconstruction work begins By Ben Brachfeld Posted on October 26, 2023 Reconstruction work has kicked off on the 130-year-old Park Avenue Viaduct, which carries hundreds of Metro-North trains daily from Grand Central Terminal but is starting to show its age, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday. Crews have begun clearing areas underneath the viaduct in East Harlem, according to the governor, to prepare the grounds for new foundations and support columns that will eventually support a new steel structure. It doesn't need murals or any other kind of silly bolt on art. It needs better architecture. It needs to not be designed like a default highway engineering overpass. Add to that the lack of any MTA planning initiative to activate the land underneath I find the whole viaduct project pretty disappointing. Tangentially related aspirations should include a modern glass shed enclosed 125th St Station with DIRECT escalator connection to the eventual (4)(5)(6)(Q) subway stations and a High Line-on-steroids cycling and pedestrian linear park running from 96th St to the Harlem River on a platform above the trackway.
