NYT I remember back in the 1950s it was swank to have your name printed on matchbooks. People gave them out at patio parties, etc. Often the matchbooks were gold foil or some other festive colored foil. You could order them by the box. We had them in our den for guests. Such fun. http://matchpro.org/ |

Yes, I checked a few times and each time it was offline. I got more "dithery" each time I checked. Quote:
When you use google to search for 828 S. Robertson, you find one side of the street is numbered in the 800's and the other side is in the 2 & 300's? Perhaps it's a demarcation between Los Angeles and Beverly Hills? Which might account for different phone numbers? Or maybe I'm still in a dither? ___ Upon some googling, there's a photo on LAPL of the Castle Steak House: https://tessa.lapl.org/cdm/search/se....)./mode/exact I was sure from the descriptions on these photos they had been posted on NLA previously, but I cannot locate any posts. I know that I've seen these before, though, somewhere. There was also a location at 425 S. Vermont Ave. |
Worldwide it seems

The Castle Restaurant

In the interim I found this older matchbook when the restaurant actually looked like a castle. (this matchbook looks familiar / seen before on NLA?) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/vin2J8.jpg As a reminder: here's the matchbook I posted yesterday. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/5k6UF5.jpg Quote:

A similar dinner will be given at the other Castle Steak House at 425 So. Vermont Ave. Photo date: November 17, 1945." ________________________________________________ This makes me wonder if the Vermont Ave. location looked like a faux-castle as well. Quote:
BUT I don't believe we have seen a photograph of the mid-century version of the Castle Restaurant (the one shown in the matchbook I posted yesterday) _ |

ethereal reality asked: Does anyone know the address of Catalina Jack's in Avalon? (I believe the address is hidden behind the matches) Quote:
I've been searching for old photographs of Avalon that show Catalina Jack's (and the Edgewater Hotel next door) but I haven't had any success. so far. Earlier, I tried to find an old image of the Wilshire Blvd. location...that didn't go so well either. |
These two 1967 aerials from the LA City Archives captioned "Downtown" show the same parking lot:

1028 N. Alameda Street

The area has changed quite a bit, but those two buildings at center right in the b/w photo above -- now apparently both 1028 N. Alameda -- are still standing in the block bordered by N. Alameda, W. Alpine, and Alhambra/N. Main. The image below looks east: https://i1165.photobucket.com/albums...psbr1phyed.jpg |
We have seen a plethora of decorated cars on NLA over the years( be it the La Fiesta Parade or the Rose Parade)
....but I don't believe we have seen this particular pic. The description is a bit vague. "1915 Los Angeles California Decorated Car Parade Photograph – J.A. Ramsey" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/9AY5MT.jpg EBAY One thing that caught my eye was the Norman Cross, with the plain ol' cross in the center (and some letters as well), draped over the frame of the windshield. Here's a closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/lf7UN8.jpg detail To me it looks like a Christian Fraternity of some sorts. (my fraternity in college, Sigma Chi, utilized a Norman Cross as well. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...921/t2cAlA.jpg Oh, I almost forgot...there are a few letters visible on the front of the car as well. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/euubkz.jpg detail Any ideas ? _ |
This is interesting as well.
"circa 1950 historic Los Angeles Hollywood Chaplin Studios" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/D0R2JG.jpg EBAY If you look closely....the car, exiting onto La Brea, is a Universal International studio car. Across the street, a cosmetic business, Selcano Cosmetics, has set up shop in a house. ____ I searched the thread for "Selcano" with 0 results. I also checked Los Angeles city directories but there is no listing for "Selcano Cosmetics" in any of the directories. You'd think it would be imperative for a small business to be listed in the phone book. Go figure. __ |

No luck with Selcano either, but in 1934 masseuse Dolletta Ackerman would rub you silly there; around 1940, Mrs. Elsa Schreiber was running a beauty parlor there... could the S be for Schreiber and the EL for Elsa? Is 1421 (née 1423) N La Brea still there? A demo permit for it was issued on March 16, 2018. Here it is late in the day, altered but stil there as of GSV Feb 2017... https://i.postimg.cc/D038jRtq/nla1421labrea-bmp.jpg Gate detail today https://i.postimg.cc/jdptzzY7/nlacha...edetail-UT.jpg |
:previous: Completely surprised the house is still there! I didn't even bother to look.

Here is another Epworth League Rose Parade entrant [date unknown]. It has a clearer view of the Norman Cross symbol. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/F9Yvj1.jpg thenewfoundphotography I have found some very interesting items concerning the Epworth League in Los Angeles. I will post my findings later today. Thanks again Lorendoc! :) _______________________ sidenote.
