Father-Son bonding is very difficult to happen, if ever. You were able to more or less do it in one day.....one of the best stories I have seen on NLA. |

Maybe you saw this already but here is how the photograph was labeled at Krull. (I noticed my link was broken in the first post) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/kb1wbO.jpg and in LAMAG https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/ieKFYn.jpg As you can see, the "5021 Felton Avenue" address wasn't just a figment of my imagination. _ update: Oh man, I just looked at my original post again and I typed 5041 instead of 5021. I am so sorry. now I understand what FW was trying to tell me. (although the address turned out to be an entirely different street as well ) not an excuse, but it's been subzero since I first mentioned the record setting MINUS -10....yesterday morning it was MINUS -18 |
:previous: I only noticed the mislabeling of the street name -- that's what I meant by the "mixup" :)
What really threw me was what HossC mentioned about GSV labeling 117th as Tahoe. |

I happened upon this sepia rppc on ebay the other day. (I don't recall seeing it on nla) I could be wrong.
"Postcard LOS ANGELES CA Congress Tourist Hotel 4 Story Building 1907" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/fV22Qv.jpg You can find the postcard HERE The Congress Hotel was located at 607 1/2 N. Main per the 1907 city directory. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...923/cKwX22.jpglapl I find it strange that a building this size has an address with 1/2. Is this the correct building? _ |

I noticed that the car was pink! Was trying to think of any red buildings around Hollywood. The Formosa Cafe is, but their lettering isn't like that. Unless it was something around the back area where no one usually takes pictures. There's also that 100 year old grocery building on Fountain, is it? And Ga something isn't much to go on... The PC does picture a Congress Hotel, which you correctly placed at W 8th and Flower (plus the Lutheran Church): https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/qk...Y=w705-h518-no baist 1921, plate 8 The other Congress Hotel was apparently south of the Sentous Block at 607 1/2 Main (the address presumably indicating it was upstairs above retail). You've taken us there before: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/MW...6=w576-h518-no baist, 1921, plate 3 Quote:

Whenever I'm snooping around on google-earth...if I notice what looks like, a recently excavated lot I zoom down for a closer look. -to see what used to be there.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/gbsl8B.jpg google_earth Much to my surprise, this lot has been vacant for as far back as the earliest street views. 2007 - 2017 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/LKC6Ti.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/PnHjxJ.jpg (although there is a segment of a river rock wall) But the real story, as it turns out, is the house next to the empty lot. (facing Lake Avenue) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/fAQIWK.jpg google_earth The one that's nestled between a Tattoo Parlor and Avis/Budget Rent A Car. :( https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/Nd7FuL.jpg gsv The house was known, a long time ago, as 'Ah-Tshi-Quah-Nah'. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Lan1jP.jpg avenue to the sky The bungalow was the home of nature writer Charles Francis Saunders, and was, along with its gardens, a major tourist attraction in Pasadena during the great hiking era which existed from the early 1900's through the early 1930's. This view shows the house during the time Mr. Saunders was in residence. (he moved there in 1906) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/crimiw.jpg bungalows of pasadena one of Mr. Saunders publications. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/t3T7hd.jpg gloria freshly art and design (this reminded me of your books odinthor) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...922/92atUv.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...924/PhIWrf.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...924/pDOS3Z.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...923/wWHqrW.jpg gloria freshly art and design And here's where the story connects with that empty lot behind the house. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/rfHBcy.jpg bungalows of pasadena "Charles Saunders and his first wife, Elisabeth (died 1910), both avid gardeners, are seen having tea under their backyard arbor. The creek and the lagoon in the background were later channelized." "The creek and the lagoon in the background were later channelized." Wow!...so of course I revisited the empty lot. this time I noticed an open 'ditch' nearby. (a remnant of the creek?) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/6kKzyY.jpg google_earth Here I'm guessing where the stream once flowed through the Saunders' property. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/YsS6tD.jpg google_earth but I have no idea how large the 'lagoon' was. __ postscript: the stream was known as Wilson's Creek. |
