I think I know where today's Julius Shulman picture was taken, but I'm a little confused by the date. I'll explain below. This is "Job 368: Gus May Men's Shop, 1948".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Getty Research Institute I found Guy S May's men's furnishings shop at 523 S Olive Street in the CDs of the 1920s and 1930s. That's in the Biltmore Hotel. Here's a tie which confirms the location. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original www.preloved.co.uk The Shulman picture seems to match the Biltmore Hotel (see below), but by 1942 there's a different men's furnishing company owned/named after Edward Wedekind Jr at 523 S Olive. The 1956 CD (the first after the date of the Shulman photo) shows Eddy Harth men's clothing at that address. Does this cast doubt on the dating of the Shulman photo, or did Guy S May return to the Biltmore in 1948? The numbering must have changed over the years, as this is the only part of the Biltmore's frontage that matches the original picture. Incidentally, 523 S Olive was also the address of St Paul's Cathedral which preceded the Biltmore. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original GSV |

I did not know about that Googie's! (And who are those women?) Quote:
I wanted to comment on that tie, though. That particular one strikes me as really ugly. (Just me?) I do notice that the ties in the Julius photo in the window on the left have that same half circle design flourish as the other tie, only reversed. Perhaps Gus liked that design style for his ties. I like it, too, just not that one particular tie! |

Thanks for looking, Martin Pal. I found a couple of pictures of the florist and coffee shop nearer to W 5th Street, but no close-ups of the Guy S May end. ---------------- This is the cleaning business built by Abe Butler at 5905 Van Nuys Boulevard towards the end of 1946. It's Julius Shulman's "Job 124: Butler's Cleaners, 1947". NB. There's another photo in the set, but it's almost identical. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Getty Research Institute I was hoping that this one might still be standing, but no such luck. It was demolished in 1971, by which time it was being used as a repair garage. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original Online Building Records I can't even show you the building that replaced it, because that was demolished around 2005. Today you'll just find the front lot of a Lexus dealer there. :( |
I found this USC snapshot a few months ago on eBay. There wasn't any information with it, but it's quite interesting none-the-less.
