You really gonna do that without suggesting what you do think is the most walkable street?

biggus diggus Feb 18, 2021 8:20 PM

We're really going to argue about which street is more walkable? Every street is walkable if you want it to be.

I guess. Nothing else happening around here. Pretty dead on the development front lately.

biggus diggus Feb 18, 2021 10:41 PM

Then I think the most walkable street is Roosevelt, too. It's the only one that has businesses lining the sidewalks and if you get more than a block or two away from it north or south it gets pretty quiet.

Nope. MY street is the most walkable. It's right outside my door. Duh. ;)

Thank you for all the photos. It's nice to catch up on it all.

I really hope Toll Brothers doesn't miss the mark on that development on Indian School but who am I kidding? They will. That corner should have a marquee entrance with, at the very least, patio dining/coffee.

I don't even think that building is structured, which is a downgrade from the complex to the north that is.

Diamonddave Feb 19, 2021 8:06 PM

Thanks for the nice pics RE. Aspire looks great and the Derby looks like it's starting to gain momentum.

I never noticed this one, maybe you all posted it already.

Having 2 stations going in right on Roosevelt Row which is supposed to be one of Phoenix's great neighborhoods seems to be a big step backwards. The locals fought development in the area for so long. Where's the fight against these substations?

Sometimes the things these "locals" choose to fight for are worthless.

The melrose liquor dump comes to mind, meanwhile developers bulldoze actual 19th century and early 20th century homes and buildings with ZERO pushback.

Phoenix preservation is a joke - too many bozos with no care for the history and an attitude that finds zero value in the local historical building stock because they came from frozen cities filled with such buildings . . .

biggus diggus Feb 19, 2021 10:28 PM

The pink liquor store debacle was fun to follow. Of all the buildings to throw a fit about, and then Rebecca buys it and does nothing for years and no one says a word?

Update On Renovations To The 1922 Ellis Building In Downtown Phoenix

Good updates on the Ellis Building reno.

https://dtphx.org/2021/02/18/
Quote:

The modern exterior façade was added in 1962, covering much of the original Art Deco detailing underneath, and it proved difficult to remove, according to Edgelow. But there are lots of historic details to discover on the inside.

The $10 million renovation included uncovering old windows to add light on the ground floor, opening covered-up skylights in the basement, refinishing the original stone floors, exposing the ceilings for a modern-industrial feel, and refurbishing elevators and old mail drops.

In all, the seven-floor, mixed-use building will incorporate office, residential, a basement speakeasy, ground-floor restaurants and a daycare.

I don't know how it could have, the red brick building is still there.

Classical in Phoenix Feb 20, 2021 1:19 AM

"Hawkins said he hopes to begin construction in May 2021 and be open by the fourth quarter of 2022. He expects rental rates to range from $ 1,250 to $ 2,000.

"We loved that aspect of being at the corner light rail stop and feel like this area is up and coming for new development," he said.

Morris, who has met with neighbors on the project, said it will head to the Center City Village Planning Committee in July."

Am I missing something here? Hawkins says he wants to start construction by May 2021, but is not going to Center City Village Planning Committee until July.

Thank you for this. But this is terribly written. So it says removing the facade to uncover art demo details proved difficult, and they follow it with a "but", then talk about the interior... does that mean they couldn't remove the exterior facade after all? Or they did, it was just very difficult? I hope the latter.

From what I remember about this project and before this article was written, the plan was to expose the previous facade. I agree that the article doesn’t really provide any clarity as to whether this was successful or not lol

I've always been curious if any other major city in the US has covered up as many of its historic buildings with facades like this...

That said, I know Phoenix has also tragically torn down much of its history.
