Alfred Dolge, a German-born industrialist, arrived in California sometime soon after departing New York in 1898. By 1904 he developed a manufacturing town called Dolgeville, which became Southern California's first experiment in city planning for the working class. Sorry but Dolgeville just does not have a classy ring to it. I went to Alhambra High just a few blocks from this area. Cheryl Tiegs, famous model, attended AHS.*

First you have to pawn some jewelry next door to afford the tattoo and the movie. The theater and stores are in the "old Rosslyn" - the 4-story building had been the Hotel Lindsey but had become the Rosslyn by 1893-ish when the Hart Brothers took it over (they started in the hotel biz as teenagers at Natick House with their dad, taking it over in 1894, and ran it and the Rosslyn until 1916), then about 1906 bought an adjacent 6-story hotel called the Lexington and annexed it as part of the Rosslyn. Then the brothers had the 1913 hotel built, and the 1923 annex.

Have you ever gazed upon an example of amazing Disney architecture and wondered where the inspiration came from for the Imagineers who created it? Today we’re lucky to hear the story and see actual photos of the building that was the inspiration for Hong Kong Disneyland’s Mystic Manor E-Ticket attraction The Victorian Mansion That Inspired WDI Imagineers. But where WDI Imagineers found the inspiration for it? Well, as you know Walt Disney Imagineering offices are in Glendale and believe it or not but the building which inspired for a big part Mystic Manor design was a "Sanitarium" of early last century located... in Glendale! Called the Glendale Sanitarium the building was in fact originally built in 1886 to be a hotel, the "Glendale Hotel", a 75-room Victorian structure on what is now Broadway Avenue.... a hotel which finally never opened! But you can see the hotel on this rare picture before the building was bought and transformed in a sanitarium. Have a look at the entrance located on the ground floor, in the center. As you can see it had two staircases, this will be transformed later when the hotel became the sanitarium with only one staircase and entrance.

Looks like the Newsoms designed the sanitarium. The Disney conglomeration looks like a little of this Newsom design, a little of that one.

It was a planned 6 mile road off shore connecting man made islands to relieve traffic on the PCH. Here's a great site that tells all about it:

As most of you know, Garvanza was located immediately north of downtown in the area we know today as Highland Park.
The town was annexed by the City of Los Angeles in 1899.

The card also mentions Sycamore Grove. I don't know where that was exactly, but I've seen postcards of the place.
I'll try and dig one up.
