Finally stopped by the Essesx project today after a client meeting. This is going to look great once trees start popping buds.

Slick. it’s so strange to see density behind the monument from the famous DNC riot.

Looks like they’re only 4 floors above the first column setback, which means about 24 floors remaining. Still a lot of building left to go!

Yes, this is a photo of a tv, but Essex is about to block Sears in one of the traditional skyline shots.

That Ebony Jet building needs an update really bad... it's hideous, I'm sorry!
|
Im not a fan of it either but I think its landmarked in some way, but I could be wrong. Careful, I think the brutalism fans like this one. I dont know if thats the right terminology but I think that one is in the same ballpark as 55 wacker? I'm probably wrong but I enjoy learning more each time I read here. Hilton has got to build a tower behind it. Pretty please?
|
Yeah it’s brutalism, and even if you don’t like it it’s worth preserving bc it throws this new glass tower into stark relief. And even on its own, it’s a handsome little design.
|
It's modernist for sure, but I don't see how it's brutalist. I thought it was covered in stone paneling, not exposed concrete.

The view of both Parks (One Grant and Essex on the) from a little farther north:

The green tint is much needed down there
|
^ Ahhhh yeah, I'm no expert on brutalism so I could totally be wrong. I had just been under the impression that exposed concrete was the default material usage. If anyone knows exactly I'd love to know so I don't sound like a moron in the future. I'm not trusting wikipedia with this

The Chazen Museum and Humanities Building by Harry Weese in Madison Wisconsin are mainline Brutalism and clad mostly in stone and metal:
