The street "dead-ending at Loomis" was 6th Street, although Loomis actually dead-ends at 6th (see Baist map below). The hotel on the corner was the Elk Hotel at 947 W 6th Street (from the 1932 CD). It's just possible to make out the name on this USC image which looks like it was probably taken at the same time as the cityscape. It also gives a better view of the Western Dairy billboards.

1934 La Crescenta-Montrose flood
 

All this talk of La Crescent made me (sort of) remember the flood out that way. I had to look it up again.

Two minutes into 1934, after heavy rains, a 20-foot-high wall of mud, water and debris came out of the San Gabriel's and took out Pickens Canyon, killing 45 and destroying 100 homes.

Twelve people, who had sought safety in the American Legion Post at Rosemont and Fairway, were killed when it filled with mud.

A system of crib dams, debris basins and flood channels has been built. It's unlikely 1934's level of damage will happen again.

The Sunset Blvd. All American Burger has been used as a filming location, redressed as the "Clown Dog"
for a film and it was in a second season episode of Californication and a first season episode of Southland.

I ate there once while attending a screening at the Harmony Gold Theatre diagonally across the street
at 7655 Sunset Blvd.

Before it was known as Harmony Gold it was called the Preview House, a TV research facility. You could be invited or get tickets to go here. You would be asked to watch a television program. It could be an existing series or a pilot for a new series. It could also be commericals. You would be supplied with a dial and encouraged to move the dial to whatever level of enjoymen (or not) you were experiencing. I do remember going here once and seeing an existing comedy program; it was a military comedy is all I can recall, that wasn't on the air long. I also saw a group of commercials they were testing for a new product. Something like an aspirin or pain pill. Afterwards they took us all to a room in the building set up with many shelves like a store and all had different kinds of pain pill remedies on them, including the new one. We were asked to "shop" for one and told we could keep whatever one we picked. I decided to take the new one as I just thought that would be interesting, but if you did, you weren't allowed to take that one, you were asked to get another one. A third time I went it was a sitcom pilot. It starred Andrea McArdle, who had recently been the star of the new musical, at the time, Annie. The premise was that her father married a woman with a son the same age as Andrea. And Andrea and the son hate each other. I remember it didn't seem very amusing to have a show based on a premise of two people hating each other. It never sold I guess.

At some point in the 1980's it turned into a screening room where groups rented it out for screenings to their memberships, like SAG or BAFTA, etc. I was invited to some of those over the years.

This L.A. Times Article from 1992 cites that Harmony Gold officials wished to turn the theatre into a 400 seat legit theatre as well as still hold screenings there and there was a lot of neighborhood protest about it. I guess that's why in 1990-91 a charity group was allowed to present a musical there which I saw. Maybe they got the idea from that. It never happened, though, it's still a screening facility.

When I was growing up, it was the Pac Mann Arcade (Google search suggests it was the Pak Mann, I must never have noticed) and was a good place to play a huge collection of old school arcade games, smoke cigarettes underage, and score dime bags. :D

In the early 2000's the Pac Mann (Pak Mann) closed and the building was completely remodeled. Yuck. :yuck:

La Crescenta Flood
 

For twenty years, starting in 1970 I lived at the bottom of Ramsdell Ave. next to the flood channel. I built several walls on the edge of my property, in the footing trenches I was forever finding lug nuts, milk bottles, prohibition prescription alcohol bottles and bits and pieces of items. All I guess from that terrible flood.

I've been trying to find information on the 'Van Deusen Estate', that was also noted on the 1934 flood map.
If you turn your head to the left and squint ;), you can see that it was located on 'Castle Road'.
That makes me wonder if the road was named after the estate? (that is, if the estate resembled a castle)

There is a house in Silver Lake called the Garbutt house-- Garbutt was in the movie business among other things--maybe mining--and built the SL house in the '20s. He lived at the SW corner of Third & Alvarado before that. Not that I've ever made it a priority, but I've never found a good picture of it--or any picture. Maybe someone will...


PS Went looking again for shots of the (1st) Garbutt house at Alvarado & 3rd-- again, nothing in the usual places, but I did find a pic of the Shell station caddy-corner to it:
