^ Do you mean open gangway? If so, those are a second contract that may expand greatly after testing and reception by the general public. It's a no-brainer. Why in the world the entire order isn't for open-gangway cars is Exhibit A for how ""this is how we've always done it" behind-the-times NYCT is. Hopefully it's getting better.

And on another note, I can only wish on a star they drop that ridiculous Cuomo paint job before full scale production. Some color on the stainless steel car would be welcome, but dear lord not like that. Blue doors a la the R-32's when they were delivered back in the 60's would look sharp.

the article sez this first order has 20 open gangway trains, with the option for many more.

they have tested them internally, but i guess they want to test them irl for a bit.

She makes many good points, and I most agree with her last point: most of the money should be going towards modernizing train signals. That's the subway's core service: fast, reliable, and on-time train service. Everything else is in support of that service or is window dressing.

I saw a Revel scooter going across the Queensboro Bridge yesterday, and on the upper deck, no less. That's a big no-no (Reve scooters are not supposed to access any bridge or tunnel crossing).

TIL that when bill buckley, the late conservative national review blowhard, ran for nyc mayor on a lark, that to relieve traffic congestion he proposed charging drivers a fee to enter the central city. he also proposed creating a network of bike lanes. this was in 1965.

‘Unprecedented’ NYC subway breakdown sparked by power surge
Excerpt
August 30, 2021

NEW YORK (AP) — A momentary power surge disrupted half of the New York City subway system for several hours and stranded hundreds of passengers, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday.

The unprecedented breakdown affected more than 80 trains on the subway system’s numbered lines plus the L train from shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday to about 1:30 a.m. Monday, Hochul said.

The restoration of service was delayed because passengers on two of the stuck trains walked out onto the tracks by themselves rather than waiting for Metropolitan Transportation Authority workers to help them, Hochul said.
