Looking fabulous, heard it was a Germanized city.

The Best Forumer Jul 20, 2021 3:18 PM

In what part of the country is this? Looks nice.

kel Aug 2, 2021 4:15 PM

By far the cleanest nicest city in China.

muppet Aug 7, 2021 5:27 PM

Qingdao was a German Treaty Port in the 19th and early 20th Century, and still operates a Mitteleuropean vernacular, but mixed with everything else.

But also a modern skyline

It's also a big maritime city, traditionally the gateway to Japan/ Korea now benefitting as a big port for the two biggest trade partners of China.

Finally it's a tourist destination for the beaches and seafood, urban beaches for the city (a bit shit), but ringed with more upmarket resorts further down the coast, that's fast becoming a Chinese riviera

Oh and alcohol. The local beerfest attracted 7.2 million tourists last year - with the usual format of vast bier halles mixed with food, lights and rides to help you part with your stomach contents -the beaches proving very handy to soak up the vom.

I'd hesitate on calling it the cleanest nicest city in China though, it's capital of a big rustbelt -long one of China's richest regions back when coal, steel and heavy industry was a thang, now in decline as the national demand becomes more eco-friendly. All of China's big cities are lean, green and super clean now in part thanks to Big Brother and the powerful environment lobby.

For example this is a third/ second tier city famous for its night markets, far inland and insanely crowded. Yet try and spot any crumb of rubbish:

That Sunseeker 88 is one of my favorite yachts.

muppet Aug 12, 2021 12:37 PM

It's in northern China, traditionally the gateway port to trade and ferries from Korea and Japan.

I am curious how this light show looks from various points on the ground, but from a drone it is fun to watch.

can't find one on Qingdao, but here in Wuhan (world's largest, over 300 buildings) it's at 36:30 and 41:21 and 46:27

Same here... wow... I've been to a lot of China's largest cities, but totally whiffed on Qingdao. Never knew this was a place I wanted to visit, but now, it's definitely on my list too!
