-you're welcome Greg H

While searching for the Radio City Motel I came across this photograph of the Black Dahlia.
As you can see, Ms. Short is standing in front of NBC Radio City on Sunset and Vine.

I don't recall seeing this photo before. Do you think it's authentic? -or is someone messing with us?

Sorry that I couldn't shrink the above photo in order to quote. Googled how to do it but for some reason it didn't work for me.

Hey ethereal_reality, this is the 700 S. block of San Pedro Street in Downtown LA. The Victorian commercial block at the far left of the photo is what gives it away. Incredibly, it still stands today!

What's even more incredible is that, going by the Google Street view, every single building in the circa 1958 photo is still in existence, with the exception of the white building just south of the corner building with the "CANVAS" sign.

We've seen this great building here before, but it's always worth revisiting. Interesting detail here:

The LAPL described this factory as being in Owensmouth/Canoga Park; some sources say Van Nuys. The Johnston company built it in 1913, selling it a year later to the California Organ Co., which two years after that sold it to the Robert Morton Organ Co. It was on Sherman Way. Anyone know if it might possibly still stand?

Speaking of deja vu, there were several posts concerning the address of this building (6001 Van Nuys Blvd. at Oxnard St.) and a couple of view. Not sure about this one.

Both screenshots from Warner Bros., 1987.

What production are these from? That might give us a starting point.

Sorry, I guess it has been a while since I mentioned my research project. They're from Scarecrow and Mrs. King, much of which was filmed in the SFV. This particular episode also featured locations in L.A. too, which means the motel could be just about anywhere...they did get around, production-wise.

Ah, identifying filming locations for the show? I'm doing that for NCIS. I'm getting better at finding places! If you have the list of locations for this episode I can help search the surrounding areas. Also, where were the main studio sets?

I could probably help you with your NCIS ones, as they have reused a lot of places that SMK filmed at. I know where Ari killed Kate and where they disarmed a bomb in a backpack that had been given to Abraham (in Lt. Col. Mann's first episode), for instance. ;)

Regarding SMK, they filmed at Warner Bros. in Burbank and in the episode in question they were also at the Biltmore, in Pasadena, in Encino, and in Thousand Oaks. That's a big stretch of territory for a single episode. In case you're interested, our entire map for the show can be found here: https://www.zeemaps.com/SMK_in_L.A.. We're just shy of 300 markers at the moment.

If you happen to spot it in your searching for NCIS, that would be super. And if there's anything you're stuck on in your own hunt, let me know. It does get easier, but every so often you hit a wall and it gets sooo frustrating.

It's going to be quite a long time before I hit a wall with NCIS, thankfully. I'm quite early along, really - mostly still doing the easy stuff as I see it in TV broadcasts - USA plays tons of episodes.

I found your SMK location, though! 16101 Ventura Blvd, Encino.

Your episode screen cap:

http://i656.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps686166b0.jpg

Unfortunately, the motel has been replaced by a shopping center. This happened between 1989 and 1994.

The L-shaped motel is visible only in the oldest aerial from Google Earth, from August 1989. I tried to match the angle of the screen cap:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m...2520AM.bmp.jpg

A shopping center with a circular area in the middle takes up the whole footprint of the old motel, as well as another building that was at the corner of Ventura & Woodley. But, the two big buildings are still there to confirm, particularly the building across the street, whose white trim is not symmetrical.

Google Earth's 1994 aerial shows the shopping center, possibly under construction but it's too washed out for me to tell.

Here's the best angle I can get with Google Maps:

Somewhere along the top (and sometimes along the bottom, too) there should be an icon of a clock with an arrow wrapped around it. Hit that and a time slider should appear with older aerials. It should also be listed in the 'View' menu as Historical Imagery.

There is also www.historicaerials.com which can have a lot of different years depending on location, although in this case they had nothing between 1980 and 2003. They have watermarks across the images but they're still helpful if you're looking for something. There is a dissolve function there that lets you fade between any two sets of images with a slider bar.

ethereal_reality Aug 19, 2013 8:56 PM

In the distance there is a turret visible on a hill. Can anyone tell me what that is? (it resembles the 'magic castle' in Hollywood)

The seller says this is the front lawn of Abraham Lincoln High School circa 1960s
