Which reminds me... I've haven't heard anyone here mention Gangster Squad...in fact, I've heard nothing about it from anyone. Could it be...well...a big bomb?

John Francis Building 934 Wall Street Seems that the building still exists. Compare brickwork/lattice design at top of building.

I read the review you linked and gave it a miss.

But here's the trailer:

LA Confidential was just too good. We won't hold still for anything less.

There were at least a couple posts about it in here after it came out:

The poor reviews are a disappointment. :(

When I first saw the trailer with City Hall prominently featured, this thread was the first thing that came to mind. I'm eager to see it on DVD or cable for the visuals, if not the plot.

Oh, look - it's the Boos Bros. cafeteria. AKA Clifton's Brookdale as it was before Clifford Clinton came along in 1935.

Really love this building!
Too bad about its current state, although it did recently get a new roof from the looks of things. It really doesn't look like it would take much love to restore it:

That is an excellent sign above the doorway. It makes me want to buy a tire cover.

Mickey and LaVonne Cohen's house at 513 Moreno Ave., Brentwood, 1949. Wonder if it still looks anything like this?

A little obscured by trees and some minor remodeling, but looks pretty similar!

There were strict rules about what could be worn for school and our frequent trips to town meant the agony of getting "properly" dressed, which was several levels beyond schoolwear.

When Mickey went to prison he liquidated the house for $49,500. It last sold in 2011 for over $3 million. Mickey would have been stunned. He was in the wrong business.
