Hmmm...I thought they were already looking at 541' feet (was that to the penthouse or some sort of crown)? That's what the FAA Circularization study stated. So are we looking higher than that?

The records request I received showed the total height as 532' 9'" (525' to the roof, 532' 9" to the top of the elevator shaft). They may have upped the height 541' to the FAA, but since the lot is zoned for 525' by the city, my guess is that is why it was rejected by the FAA.

I may put in another records request to see if anything has changed with specs/design of Astra, but I see no reason at all why the city would not approve another 15'. Then again, it's Phoenix.


Edit: Also, there is a zoning sign (ZA-205-20-7) to reduce the sidewalk minimum width to 7' at 111 North 3rd St. in front of the convention center. Anyone know that they have planned there? Currently it's about a 20' or so feet in width.

Another Edit: Went back and looked at my records request and it does indeed look like the roof is listed at 532' 9" and the mechanical screening on the roof would take it to about 541'...give or take. Hey...I can't remember EVERYTHING I post on here! :haha:

X's taller crane getting raised this weekend. They are raising it to about 400'. I'm not sure why it needs to be so tall for a building that is only 269', but I don't build these things. Not sure if they are raising the other crane, but I don't seen any work on it or any more sections on the ground.

Sorry if someone noted this earlier on the other thread but if they did I did not see it. I would put this post under AZ Center Renovation except that is more pertinent to this helicopter video. I noticed in the video that the grass at the area of where Palm Court is dormat (dead) so they did not over seed with summer grass like the usually do. That is a possible tell, as they would say in poker, which might indicate they plan on starting construction sometime this summer or early fall. Time will tell!

That helps. I was trying to make the distinction based on floors and confusing myself in the process. Making the distinction in terms of feet is clear and accounts for spires and other features that increase height regardless of the number of stories in a building.

I believe the site was listed for sale back in June. I came across a comment on Reddit where past/present pics were posted and the following was said: "I was at the historic preservation office and they winked winked that there were special things happening. They couldn't say what but it was on their radar!"

This is really a tough one for me. If we ever get commuter rail i'd like to see this restored as a station. It's a bit far though from the light rail to be a perfect transfer point between Central Ave. new south phoenix route and commuter rail.

I would maybe like to see smaller shops (DeSoto-esq) or brewery. But I'm OK with this sitting vacant for another 10 years until the area can properly support it. I think its tough right now to have anything sustained there yet.

Something like Maynard's Market & Kitchen in Tucson would be great.

The grass has not been watered or seeded since November. The only reason it lasted as long as it did was due to a wet winter. But they have been letting it die off or quite some time now.

I would absolutely love a west line commuter rail all the way out to Buckeye. Much like how Chicago has their own metro rail system out to the south suburbs, Phoenix really needs to get in on that action.
