im not in HP too often but was down there this weekend, and this one really puts on a cool show with the warm late afternoon sun.

Meanwhile Solstice really looks great in the early morning winter sun. The angled portions catch the sunrise first and turn half of the building warm yellows gradating up to green blues at the top while the vertical sections are still reflecting the dark sky.

I was riding the Rock Island into the city, at around 7:15 in the morning, the other day and you could clearly see it shining from the flyover. It had a brilliant orangish yellow glow. It was beautiful from miles away!

A 60-70 floor version of this in one of the empty lots of LSE would do right by me. But thats just me.

New student housing at 61st and Woodlawn

No rendering but a good amount of detail.

Woodlawn Residential Commons
Housing for 1,200 students + dining commons open to the public
Elkus Manfredi Architects
Capstone Development Partners and Harrison Street Real Estate Capital
Construction to start this summer

^ Huge density boost to where there is now a parking lot. Looks like they chose a rather ho-hum architect, though...

LouisVanDerWright Jan 24, 2018 5:59 AM

I'll give it the benefit of the doubt because it's U of C, but damn does that architecture firm have some flaming hot garbage on their website...

SolarWind Jan 24, 2018 1:40 PM

Elkus Manfredi designed the Peninsula hotel and retail complex at 730 N. Michigan Avenue. I worked as a project engineer during part of the development.

the urban politician Jan 24, 2018 2:23 PM

^ No offense but the Peninsula Hotel is such a turd at least as far as exterior design is concerned. As a top hotel in the US we (and its brand) deserve better

The firm of Elkus Manfredi Architects is designing the facility. To allow the University to develop the commons without taking on new capital investment, a private developer team of Capstone Development Partners and Harrison Street Real Estate Capital will develop, provide the capital, oversee the design and construction of the project, and thereafter assume responsibility for upkeep of the new residential and dining commons after construction is complete.

It is unclear what role the University will have in the design.

BorisMolotov Jan 25, 2018 4:22 AM

Elkus Manfredi did the Edgewater Hotel expansion here in Madison and while not the greatest exterior design did a wonderful job on the interior as well as contextually within the site and the surrounding neigborhood. It might not be the most groundbreaking exterior but it will probably be pretty cool inside.

Renderings were added to the link above. Pretty conservative but a new highrise at the very least.

Looks fine to me...

It's a dorm, it looks like one. Reminds me of lots of mid-century dorms, the architecture is understated but sorta handsome. I like the N-shaped massing with the midrise and tower portions. There's certainly nothing about it that makes me cringe...

left of center Jan 26, 2018 6:36 AM

^ Its replacing a parking lot, and its south of the Midway. Both big positives in my book.

the urban politician Jan 26, 2018 2:32 PM

^ Agreed. I’d love to see Woodlawn evolve into the next Hyde Park, wit Hyde Park gentrifying further

It isn't a total turd. The stretch of buildings along the south side of the Midway contains many examples of work by masters of 20th century architecture. This isn't one of them, but I feel less concerned since it isn't actually on the Midway.

The back half of the parking lot at 53rd/Cornell is now fenced off and there's heavy equipment on site. They might just be doing utility work though.
