'mystery' building. I found this interesting cabinet card several weeks ago on ebay. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/3NFQPe.jpg This is no doubt a hotel but it doesn't look familiar to me. :previous: I hadn't thought of that CBD. It's a possibility.
For comparison, here's a Tally-Ho carriage in front of the Irvine-Bryne Building, 1890s http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/4QPNRH.jpg http://waterandpower.org & the coach in the Howland & Chadwick photo. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/XQym0G.jpg detail :previous: Is that a field of wild flowers? -maybe |

I found the following three snapshots this afternoon on ebay.
"Tourists in Chinatown Los Angeles CA "Shanghai Street" 3 Vintage 1943 Photos" http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/jV5D43.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tourists-in-...oAAOSwux5YQHNO I'm pretty sure this is 'China City' instead of Chinatown. (look closely for the 'Shanghai Street' sign) And I'm pretty sure this is Olvera Street. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/6rfLxR.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tourists-in-...oAAOSwux5YQHNO I wonder why most of the booths are closed- below: "Durango/Jose' Herrera Perfumed Candles' http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/t4qg4a.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tourists-in-...oAAOSwux5YQHNO Maybe they make the candles in the basement. _ |

Yes, that's either me or my (older) brother in front of Clifton's. To me, it looks more like my brother (my hair has a bit of a wave), and maybe I was taking the photo; but my brother says he thinks it's me. So the experts are divided on this one. On to a great new year, everyone! Hurray for NLA and NLAers! :fireworks: |
Happy New Year Noirishers from Ernie's Bar.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/YzDzwC.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/ozfan22/3157520800/ ozfan22 writes..."My Grandma Pauline enjoying her family at her brother, Ernie's bar in Los Angeles, 1948." -ozfan22 Someone on flickr asked him where Ernie's bar was located, but he didn't answer their question. :( Does Ernie's bar ring a bell for anyone? _ I love the hand-made bar with the 'inlaid' rocks. |

Happy New Year to everyone at NLA (this photoset is actually dated just before Christmas in 1954, but the message is what I wanted :)).
"Bernard Caughlin, general manager of the Los Angeles Harbor Department, and Joann Montoya, 19, San Pedro, with symbolical signal welcoming ships into Los Angeles harbor with 'Happy New Year's Greetings'. The signal will be hung on the Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse until the holidays are ended." http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original USC Digital Library |
Happy New Year
_ I like the television set, seems upscale for 1948. It's not clear from the syntax above that the tavern was actually called "Ernie's bar." Maybe it was owned by Ernie and called something else? But assuming the former, the 1956 street directory lists: Ernie's Cafe at 4321 S Vermont, Ernie's Club Cafe at 1470 W Santa Barbara, Ernie's Cafe at 5221 Hollywood Blvd, Ernie's Tavern at 6520 S Fig. Of these, only the Hollywood one is still there and still a bar: http://i.imgur.com/twChRbk.jpg GSV |

Of course Ernie's bar might have been just about anywhere in LA...and not named "Ernie's Café" at all...but there was an Ernie's Café at 5221 Hollywood Boulevard...which is now, if not then, covered in...rocks! Apparently it was owned by a Peter J. Lombardi.... and there was a little noir happening there in 1948. I didn't dig further to see if little Marilyn Jean's death may have been the result of foul play... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/2fZ0EI.jpg gsv :previous: Thanks for your sleuthing Lorendoc. That could be it! __ update: GW, thanks for your help too. (I just now read your post) Ii was a bit presumptuous to automatically think the Ernie's bar was actually named' Ernie's Bar'. I'm going to go back to ozfan22 flickr albums and see if he ever mentions Ernie's last name. (to look him up in the city directory) Here's another look: Enlarged to see all the details in the background. (I believe there's some kind of notification near the front door) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/5k5PRh.jpg I wonder what the cake was for.......Birthday?............Anniversary? __ I have to admit, I just love this photograph. Every time I look at it it makes me smile. _ |
hah
Lots of editing and cross posting confusions :)

:previous: GW and Lorendoc, the plot just thickened.
After snooping around a bit more, I've come to the conclusion that we have seen Ernie before on NLA! I just didn't realize it was the SAME Ernie. The below photograph is dated 1945 (three years before the 'Ernie's bar' photograph) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/hy4NFu.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/ozfan2...7623614988303/ "Ernie's Gas Station with Girls, 1945 Ernie with two of his nieces, Barbara and Joyce at his gas station." -ozfan22 ozfan doesn't mention Ernie is his uncle but he does mention it in this 2nd photograph. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/5pUXNk.jpg Ernie's Gas Station, 1945 "My uncle Ernie and his friend Jack, owned a gas station at 9700 Main Street in Los Angeles back in the 40's". -ozfan22 I believe Ernie is the guy next to the woman holding the cake in the bar photo.... but I still haven't figured out his last name. __ my earlier post with these same photos. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=31071 |

9700 S. Main has a building permit (not online) from 1927. There is a new permit construction issued to David Mings for a restaurant/cafe in 1945. This subsequently became a union hall, and until recently was: http://i.imgur.com/y8KMynm.jpg GSV (demolition permit issued 2015 for a residential duplex.) The earliest historic aerial is from 1952 and looks more like a building than a gas station. |
A later incarnation of 9700 S Main appears to be the Club Alimony....
