There will be an elevator that runs up a track on the interior that will take people up who are unable/unwilling to take the stairs. |
Will there be any benches or will there be enough space on the steps for a couple to sit down and enjoy the view?
Very excited about this project! |
Very cool, just wish the top was resolved a little differently. The bottom is quite an appropriate entrance while the top feels seemingly cut off

They will be for Extreme Skateboarding..;) Everyone will be happy on the Vessel. There's only the one woman (on the left) who clearly has received some disturbing news on her phone. Not the place to be when you get bad news. http://m1.i.pbase.com/o9/06/102706/1....ladyphone.JPG |

1) Scaled 432 Park (using those suction cups from hell) And then 2) Paraglide to Trump tower. Kill two birds with one stone. You get to the top of 432 Park, and then Trump tower! ;) o... where talking about the vessel. I see. NV then... |
Besides viewing the surrounding landscape from the top of this thing (and the various levels getting there), I would like to see this view...

the big question here though...is...will the wessel be nuclear?

never met an architectural model I didn't love . .
even the Ingles models of 2 WTC look great . . but only as models . . so too does the model of "the Vessel" pictured above . . it's fascinating as a small sculpture . . and it probably would be exciting full scale, in most other locations . . but I'm not sure that's the case here . . Hudson Yards is already getting to be an alienating neighborhood . . . . with all that biggness everywhere . . all covered in silver glass . . Will this spiral vessel . . in proximity to "the Spiral" Ingles' building . . send HY spiraling into the twilight zone . . The other day after touring HY construction . . I found myself walking down an avenue canyon in the west 30s . . B'way, I think . . in the monotonous Garment District . . a stretch of the city I used to hate . . It's an ugly endless progression of massive masonry factory buildings . . it could use a glass building or two there . . to break up the sameness . . but after the mirrored corridors of Hudson Yards, . . with silvery-blue 10 HY & 30 HY, reflecting 3 manhattan West . . with its slick glass reflecting everything else . . more such glass at 5 MW . . it's disorienting corners . . mirroring into each other ad infinitum . . then envisioning all the proposals in the HY pipeline . . with lots more sterility coming very soon into this environment . . OMG . . it was truly a relief to experience the ugly Garment-District canyon . . with it's cozy warmth of earthy masonry materials . . So, in this relentlessly brand-spanking-new neighborhood . . you'll get these intriguing, but daunting stairs, going every which way, . . in a harsh, visually confusing, Esher-esque geometry . . Doesn't this uninviting, uncomfortable human-hamster maze . . seem sort of "fun-house horror-movie-ish" ? . . not cozy, not serene, not tranquil, not sublime, . . Please God, just send us an unpretentious little brick church here . . or an old tenement building with a decorative cornice and a rusted fire escape . . So my point about the Vessel is . . relationships of scale & location make all the difference . . in its large actual-size scale . . with it's harsh windswept vibe . . it sort of wont attract the everyday passerby to get in there and party . . Well, certain people, in a vivacious mood, will surely dig it . . But overall, for the average bloke shopping or coming from work ? . . or his grandma, it's not gonna be happenin' . . but hey, it's better than the Eiffel Tower . . |
honestly as far as corporate arts goes i am more excited for the 56 leonard bean than this. i hope that does not get value engineered out down there. that will look great for everybody walking by. this vessel business is kind of an eyesore. it will be active and fun though for sure, so i'm just nitpicking the sterility of it a bit. i certainly have no idea or imagination for what could have been better.

It's like Chutes and Ladders without the chutes
|
^ haha yeah.
since an observation type experience is what seems to be desired, maybe they should have just gone all out for a tokyo skytree? |
Quote:
You'll just have to wait until it's built. It's what's called a "participatory" sculpture. It's not merely there for you to look at. Just as people love to walk accross the Brooklyn Bridge, or down the High Line, this too will swarm with crowds. If you don't get it, that's fine, no one has to and not everyone will. But there will be more than enough people swarming around and through this thing. As far as the Tokyo Skytree, why on earth would they build such a thing here in the plaza, especially considering they have an observation deck towering above??? |
^ obviously a skytree would be in place of an obs deck on a bldg.
the exercise being, if not a vessel, then what? just don't say a big water fountain. ha. |

Oh snap, didn't expect to see it show up already.

This thing is going to be amazing.

Will this be wheelchair accessible/handicap friendly?
|
It will have an elevator, so yes
|
oh boy ! . . this is gonna be so much fun ! . .
I cant wait ! . . I cant wait ! . . Go over here ! . . Go over there ! . . Look mom ! . . Look Dad ! . . Huh ? . . Why does everybody feel sick ? . . Let's get the hell out of this thing . . all this relentless vomitous symmetry . . it's eating our souls alive . . after only 20 MINUTES . . |
^ I don't get your criticism of this structure. It is a form of art. There is no wrong or right. No good or bad. It's all subjective anyway. What you call "vomitous" is awe-inspiring for somebody else.
Anyway, it'll be another point of interest for the city, which will make the city that much more interesting. Would you happier if there was nothing there instead? |

Exactly, it will be one of the new, non-skyscraper icons of the city. It's interesting to watch this begin to take shape along with the New York Wheel on Staten Island. New York is never done, so everything you think you know about NY is just part of a larger story still being told (think of it that way). This structure, like the NY Wheel, like the new parks and attractions being built around the city, after they're built and have taken their rightful place in the city fabric, will seem as natural as the Empire State or Central Park in belonging here. There was a time when NY didn't have those either. I'm sure there were those who thought putting that statue of a woman in the harbor (of all places), was a ridiculous idea too. There's a critic for everything. Would you happier if there was nothing there instead? . .
- antinimby Maybe not . . there are cool things about it . . it has texture, it is very interactive, a good place to exercise . . but for all its focal positioning, expense, energy, material & hype . . I also see a big, hyper-complex, tedious picnic-basket . . a severely symmetrical geometric form of common proportion . . an Escher-esque nightmare . . generating "stress-producing" vibes . . rancorous enough to agitate our urban experience . . It's a perfect location for shooting high-anxiety movie scenes . . like Hitchcock's Vertigo . . It's a design that's anything, but soothing . . like a refreshing grand fountain . . or an unusual water feature . . It's not a graceful architectural monument, . . or preeminent landscape-engineering feature. We might've had an supremely vertical avant-garde abstraction . . with phenomenal 22nd-century night-lighting aspects . . (no Koons steel-balloon dog) . . something aesthetically wonerful . . in contrast to the mostly undistinguished HY glass building shapes . . The intrusive bulky vessel, next to the boxy culture-shed . . both in such close proximity . . awkwardly similar in volume and proportion . . seems to hijack what could've been a beautiful open sweep . . of a landscaped avenue handsomely joining the plaza . . there's a critic for everything - NYguy Most opinions on the forum are not witlessly unfounded . . Everything that's built isn't great . . they ripped down Penn Station to build MSG . . think the Colosseum complex at Columbus Circle . . What about that modern mistake blocking the entrance to McKim, Mead & White's Brooklyn Museum entrance . . I know. We are getting this exact The Vessel. So, should we just shut up already, & like it ? . . everyone roll over & let developers promise glorious focal points . . surpassing even the Eiffel Tower, . . then allow them to deliver monstrous picnic baskets instead . . Thank you, your omnipotence ! . . It is our city as much as theirs . . As a citizen of NYC, I reserve the right to bitch . . then change my mind . . perhaps, eventually learn to like it . . |

Oh please. No one said you had to like it. The fact remains, not everything is liked by everyone. Don't just assume everyone loves the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty. Lots of people hate Times Square, some think Central Park is too big and overrated. There are those who insist a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge is pointless. I get all of that. But you know what? None of that matters, because those places are iconic and draw crowds anyway, critics be damned. So the point is not to insists that YOU personally like it, but to understand that it will be everything Related intended it to be. Just sit back with your arms crossed and watch everyone else who will, enjoy it. https://therealdeal.com/2017/02/06/b...in-future-nyc/ February 06, 2017 By Kathryn Brenzel and Miriam Hall Quote:

Oh man, I wonder how much extra time that means in terms of them resuming construction of the Vessel
|
so the stairs came all this way and now they cant get it across the street? thats pretty funny actually. oh the humanity, right? yeah there will be some delay. i'm sure they can work it out.

Just sit back with your arms crossed
and watch everyone else who will, enjoy it. - NYguy I love all the things you mentioned . . Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty. Times Square lights in the rain . . always see the value of Central Park . . I once thought a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge was pointless . . until I did it a few times . . but I always thought it beautiful . . I just don't find this thing attractive . . all those perfect, affluent, squeeky-clean, revoltingly-happy people . . (as pictured in the promotional renderings) . . enjoying themselves so thoroughly, . . in, on, & around this "sculpture" . . they just look so incongruent, . . juxtaposed with the tediously depressive "Vessel" . . anyway, . . since this is what we're getting, I certainly do hope that everybody enjoys it . . and that not too many of them fall to their death . . |
I wonder if they might erect another crane to transfer the parts of Vessel across 11th Avenue ... might be less expensive than strengthening the road ...

not a chance . . I'll have to see all the merriment . . beautiful, happy, carefree families . . well-dressed, casually strolling about . . skipping up the stairs 2 at a time . . ice-cream cones dripping . . cavorting with their balloons and bubble gum . . hanging precariously over the edge snapping selfies . . Perhaps there'll be tuckered out, tormented trouble-makers . . congregating nefariously in Vessel . . chucking trash down stairs . . committing rape, murder, suicide, and seditionary acts ? . . trashy hookers on level 7 1/2 . . |

Not really digging it, honestly. |
