Looking at their development in the north end Superstore, my guess is it'll be one of the chain restaurants from that development:

ie.: either a Swiss Chalet, Kelsey's (unlikely though), Montana's, or Milestone Steak House.

significantly more taxidermy than I'd expect from a vegetarian/vegan restaurant ;)

EDIT: I see from Facebook that they're plastic. Things are making sense again.

Skye Cafe and Bistro

Great development, looks like the Science Center is finally getting a new restaurant, and it includes some quality players in the food industry. Milton Rebello a well know chef is the owner with his wife. The former owner of Orange Boot Bakery will be the pastry chef. Orange Boot was by far the best bakery in the city until it closed. Looks like a killer herb/veg garden as well. It opens this week and will be worth a try.

Funny you should mention that, I was just thinking the same thing! That's a big no no. The chemicals from the wood will surely seep into the soil.

With everything up for auction at Macdougall's, does anyone know what happened with Tumblers? Word is they have reopened, but the Macdougall auction list is pretty comprehensive. Has it been sold to new owners who have 100% redone the inside?

As per their Twitter and Facebook accounts, they are closed down until Sept for a major renovation though they are still open for takeout.

I have trouble believing this since the tax man was there seizing stuff a few weeks back.

Stormer Aug 23, 2016 12:44 AM

yes, once again the euphemistic "CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS"

Festivus Aug 23, 2016 3:28 PM

Yeah they were shut down by the CRA. My friend was a corporate auditor at the CRA a few years ago, and he told me that the only way you'd have the CRA come and do a seizure/raid is if you are under investigation for tax fraud. They wouldn't do a seizure for being in arrears as the CRA is not in the business of owning pizza ovens and reselling them. He said they would have likely seized the cash registers, all paper articles in the building, all electronic devices, and likely done the same at the owner's home as well.

I suspect the owner knew it was coming too, as they posted the renovations notice a few days before the raid. Just from hearing around from people involved with the owner, he wasn't exactly an above-board kind of guy, and was pretty shady.

Rumour is that he's driving the Tumblers food truck around town to avoid having it seized. I saw it on Albert St this weekend (didn't look like the tax man driving it).

I also saw it operating in Wascana Park a month or so ago. I wonder if he is only accepting cash payments? He could also have a different business set up for the food truck, which might put it outside the scope of the CRA investigation into his other business.

I haven't been by to confirm this, but I've heard that Tumblers is still selling pizza by the slice at the Grant Rd location. I have a hard time believing this, given the number of critical items on the auction site (2 pizza ovens, 1 convection oven, numerous pizza pans, raw ingredients, etc). If true, I assumed a corporate structure like you're describing above... but I have a hard time believing they're operating in that location.

Usually, yes. For instance, a mall only has one address, but each store in it is a suite. Same thing applies for most strip malls that aren't completely parallel to the road.

No, they're all different addresses. O.B. Kitchen next door is 170. WP Garden is 254.

The city only recognizes one address for the mall, in this case 166. Canada Post, on the other hand, will often allow you to use suite numbers or individual addresses depending on the location/desire.

Siam

Siam has a notice up that they are closed for renovations/expansion. I believe they may be taking over the spot to the north of them, which is the only vacant retail space left on that block of Hamilton, the former Picasso hair studio. Would allow them to expand their patio in the summer too I would guess.

https://scontent-yyz1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...02&oe=58E2989F

From their Facebook page:
Siam will be closed for renovating and expanding our restaurant starting from Monday 19th of December 2016.
We will re-open on Monday 9th of January 2017.

Udon'tknow Dec 21, 2016 3:27 AM

Caraway Grill

Has also expanded, and their new kitchen looks open, which I think means they now have a larger dining area. I assume all the renos are done but not 100% sure on that. Good to see the ethnic dining options doing so well to expand.

Caraway and Siam are awesome local establishments. We all must try to patronize them more. You will be rewarded with delicious food. I do not think I have ever ordered off the menu at Siam. I hope to do so in the evening soon.

My complaint is that they have had probably 6 restaurants attempt to take that space, most of which were not even really competitive to their decaying businesses. Hamilton has greatly improved and I hope it continues to do so.

Caraway and Siam are our 2 favorite restaurants in the entire city, great to hear that they are both expanding (they both needed the extra space)

Bizarre is a good word for it. I like it there, but it kinda feels like you're at a house party in a stranger's basement where everyone is pretty friendly, but no one really knows whose party it is.

Divorce is putting it kindly.
Landlord/tenant/insurance/contractor "disagreement" is likely the best way it can be described.

Though they like the location & the clientele, Table 10 was not sad to leave. Not a bit.
