A mystery location for Saturday night...(I have no life)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/1X5Js8.jpg
eBay

It's one of those instances where I found the address of an employee but not the address of the actual store.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/84NtfF.jpg
lapl / for search purposes: Gambles Western Auto Supply Store

After looking closely at the writing on the reverse of the photograph I think the location might be somewhere along East Florence Ave.

Help.

Earlier this morning I happened upon this rppc on eBay.

It shows a McLassen Transit Co. in Westwood, California.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/liHLQZ.jpg
eBay

On the back someone has penciled in "Stage Depot". (below)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/QM3e3E.jpg

But the place (and cars) look too modern to be a stage depot.

Any ideas where this might have been located? ..The trees look more like northern California to me.

Here's another car lot mystery location. Interestlingly enough, this one has another photographer in the photo!

Like the others, this lot is also in Burbank.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/bHPpqi.jpg

I just noticed the lights are identical to the lights at Mayfield Used Cars but I still think this is a different location.

There are quite a few clues so hopefully we can figure this one out fairly quickly.

It's not McLassen, it's Mt Lassen Transit. Apparently still in business, this is from their website:
Mt. Lassen Motor Transit Has It’s Roots in Northern California

Established around the turn of the century with a stage operation serving the mill workers from Westwood to Susanville, Mineral and Red Bluff, Mt. Lassen Motor Transit rapidly expanded with routes in Oregon and Nevada as well as Northern California. Following World War II the bus line saw a marked decrease in service and eventually reverted to one bus route. In 1952 the office officially moved from Susanville to Red Bluff where they are still in operation today.
As far as I can see, this Westwood is a small town approx. 120 miles north of Sacramento and 75 miles east of Redding.

Thanks Hoss. I should have checked to see if there was another Westwood in California before I posted the postcard on NLA. :duh:

Westwood is not a big place. It's not even a town. According to Wikipedia, "Westwood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lassen County, California", with a population of 1,541 in 2020.

Mackerm Jan 23, 2023 8:52 PM

There was a Los Angeles Times article about similar confusion with Brentwood, California. It's something the Post Office is constantly dealing with.

It's frustrating that there doesn't appear to be any collection of scanned phone books online; white pages or yellow pages. That would make it easier to track down the photos containing Newberry's or the auto parts store. (I'm guessing that at some point Gamble's Auto Supply merged with Western Auto Supply.)

Copyright problems perhaps? The phone company made big bucks from people calling 411. The city directories must be a holdover from the pre-telephone era.

Maybe old newspaper advertisements contain listings of the chains' locations.

ER, 2A looks like the area off of Valley Blvd in El Sereno where the elementary school is (northeast of Selig Zoo). The Newberry distro building kinda reminds me of what the former Bullocks distro building looks like. If you would continue to go east, you would cross the recently demolished Pacific Electric 4 track bridge..... I also may be totally wrong.

(either way i feel a former right of way for trains is the reason why we see some many triangle intersections and the reason for several streets in one frame)

...here's one that I took the other day, post tree-scalping and torrential rains, of a great decaying 1922 "masterpiece" from West Hollywood's Crescent Heights' 1905 Hays and Norton subdivision. The first two-story apartment building on Havenhurst south of Fountain. 1238-1248 Havenhurst Drive.

Once home to Flash Gordon-era Buster Crabbe, MGM's long-time publicist/fixer Howard Strickling (noir figure in his own right), and later Mrs. Potato Head and Seinfeld's Estelle Harris. One of several kinds of this apartment design spread across the Garden of Allah region. Does anyone have more information? Builder, designer, history? We've had three recent deaths on property, though no ghosts that we know of (yet).

As seen in 2023:
https://brettspivey.net/havenhurst2023.jpg
(personal photo)

I can show more details if interest exists.

For all the lovers of noirchitecture, the 1934 LACD calls the property "Claybourne Court" ...
(this was a brand new fact, since i hadn't realized about CD "City Directory" listings available until just recently, finally reaching an explanation in the year 2018 within the forum here)...

Well I'll be... I used to be acquainted with someone who lived in that building, for 10-12-15 (?) years, before they relocated. (1238 1/2 address; the second apartment in from the street, on the right.) I recall him saying Estelle Harris lived there. And that Keanu Reeves visited someone who lived there for a time. Didn't know about the other famous residents. Yes, one of the only apartment buildings that I've known where the apartments have two floors. In this photo I notice a TV antenna; are those still in use? I may have noticed it as I noticed one on my apartment building this past week and I wondered why it wouldn't have been removed long ago. I'd be interested in "more details."

https://brettspivey.net/IMG_9488.jpg

The TV antennas no longer work, but the (c.2005) landlord was once affiliated with Donald Sterling's management group, so maintenance lacks. Reeves had visited back in his Dogstar years, but musicians ranging from Hoobastank, Incubus, Anthrax, and The Motels had been seen living and/or working there over the years. As well as Estelle Harris, for decades living here was the great character tv background actor Joseph Medalis, who appeared in dozens of 1970s and 80s TV series and was attacked by a boom mic in the Kentucky Fried Movie.

Harris was attacked by Hard Copy through one of her neighbors' dramas and moved to a more secure home. That neighbor, Anton Greene, moved in to Claybourne Court at age 4 with his parents, became an independent filmmaker in the Valley during his teenage years, returned to live on Havenhurst another 45 years as an artist, such as creating metal sculpture or art directing The Chevy Chase Show, and semi-peacefully dying of lung cancer in his living room in his late 60s. *He brandished both gun and machete, during a mid-life drinking crisis that brought Sheriffs with drawn shotguns to the complex several times in the late 1990s.

Howard Strickling lived here in 1929 while running MGM's Publicity department, a fixer-position along with Eddie Mannix, hiding the worst of the noir and ruling the press for more than three decades - he got his fingers dirty yet presented them as spotlessly clean. Buster Crabbe moved into the front apartment in 1932. According to the Movieland Directory (RIP), most of the residents in the 1930s through 1960s had behind-the-scenes industry jobs, such as van drivers, makeup artists, local theatre actors, and food services, all with the local film studios, but that excellent website is now gone.

Yes, two floors, but bathrooms are only upstairs, so you might need to hold it!

https://brettspivey.net/IMG_9500.jpg
(personal photo)

Once, four of these lamps where hanging on-property. Two given away by a long-time landlord, Israel Eisenberg, in late 1990s, because the wiring had gone bad and he did not want to pay an electrician to fix them. Another was destroyed by gardeners in 2015, and trashed before it could be saved and restored.

There are several similar styled apartment complexes still standing in the blocks surrounding, almost like they share an architect. They don't seem as fancy as the Andalusa, La Ronda, or Garden of Allah, however designed in the same vein. The city of West Hollywood attempted to include 1238-1248 Havenhurst into their historical district, but various landlords have demurred recognition. I've tried to look up more on Claybourne Court, haven't found anything outside of the City Directories yet, but very happy to get help!

Thanks for that, 1612h...!

One of the first times I visited my friend there, I had no idea that the space, the "red tinted" sidewalk area between the apartments, was a driveway to the garage area in the back. I was sitting facing a window and all of a sudden I saw a vehicle outside the window going by and it startled me! It moved past and I was informed the reason for that. I had no idea, though now it seems a bit obvious. I was told the garbage trucks would go through there to the back as well.

Thanks for the info. Great photos as well!

I went through the 1940 census for 1238-1248 Havenhurst Dr., no one of note appeared....I then went to the 1930 census....

Charles McNaughton, an English actor with 13 Broadway credits and some film work, turned up at 1246 Havenhurst.....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

He was in the 1934 version of "Treasure Island", directed by Victor Fleming and starring Wally Beery, Jackie Cooper and Lionel Barrymore....McNaughton and Jackie Cooper....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...370&fit=bounds

The neighborhood, in 1930, was populated with all manner of film folk....writers, directors just coming out of the silents, actors....I'll do a post on it....if anyone wants to join in the (rather tedious) process of going through the Enumeration District it's here on the Family Search site run by the L.D.S. Church, access is free with registration....

Right off the bat, very first name in the book, is the legendary film composer Dimitri Tiomkin, at 1445 N. Fairfax.....

Interesting! I have occasion to walk by there once in awhile. That address is now an apartment building called Casa Cecilia. Something tells me in 1930 houses were probably on the street and not apartment buildings, but I don't know. It's just south of Sunset Blvd. where the current Rite Aid is located and once was a Thrifty and A&P Market in the 30's.

Tiomkin's wife, the ballet dancer/instructor Albertina Rasch, took out 2 permits in 1930, converting a portion of 1445 N. Fairfax to a dance studio....

It just doesn't seem right but it's reality.

When I was a kid in the 1950s and early 1960s it was still common to see cars and trucks from the 1930s being driven around, and it was not unusual to see some 1920s cars as well in traffic. A lot of these 1920s cars were being converted into "hot rods" as well. During WW2 almost no passenger cars were made, so the pre war cars were still common and in demand. After the late 1950s and early 1960s, the older pre war cars were rapidly retired from use and junked, but there were a few still around.

That "soon to be" in the caption is very premature, it was several other kinds of unsuccessful small eateries, before it became PUMP in 2014. I'm not an expert on this subject, but this is what I looked up: Before moving to the U.S., Vanderpump designed 26 of the London-based restaurants, bars and clubs that she co-owned with her husband. The couple currently own 3 restaurants in California; SUR Restaurant & Lounge (the focus of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills spin-off Vanderpump Rules) is based in West Hollywood along with Pump Restaurant and Tom Tom Restaurant & Bar.

This is what I mean... Here's a rendering of the construction taking place in this area. You can see in this rendering they still have the red Hamburger Habit in the bottom right corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Robertson. It is not there now.

Above: This is looking west along Santa Monica Blvd.; across the street is Pavilions grocery store, which went by Safeway before that, and above that in the photo is where the Palm Restaurant used to be. The construction has finished and it's now a several story apt. or condominium bldg. with possible businesses on the first floor.

The first crosswalk (in the above) is La Peer and the second Almont, at which point this construction is also underway; below:

This is looking southeast along SMB and Melrose where it intersects with Doheny. This is the area where folks were trying to save the art deco veterinary building located there.

A couple articles about these places:

When I was young in the 50's I went with my father many times to the wholesale produce markets on San Julian St, my father knew many of the Chinese merchants there. We would have lunch in the kitchen at Paul's Cafe usually having a Chinese Pork sandwich with Mayo.. Good memories.

As long as we're on San Julian, there's a very unusual brickwork pattern along the top of the building across the street at address 1125:

I don't believe I've ever seen that pattern before.

I like it! The earthquake retrofitting doesn't help the look, but it is necessary. I enjoy looking for movies and TV that takes place in, say NYC, but filmed in L.A. and noticing times when you'll see this retrofitting that isn't in those actual cities. (Not required, but I guess it could be done for other reasons in those places.) I don't recall which one, but in one of the Spiderman movies there's a whole retrofitted brick building I noticed.

A classic. Hope you kept it. Just goes to show, things once regarded as junk can later become treasures. Fortunately I kept my baseball card collection. Had some cards in there that became valuable, e.g. Sandy Koufax as a Brooklyn Dodger, Don Drysdale as Brooklyn Dodger, early Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays etc. Advantages of being a packrat. Unfortunately, lost some years later in a move, and most of the rest I sold years later for thousands of dollars but if I had saved them, would probably be worth tens of thousands or more.

Known as "basket weave" (obviously) now mainly seen in paving-stone patterns.

the mere presence of a Spider-Man requires extensive retrofitting throughout the city...

A mystery location.

"Goodhue" shows up often in a search of NLA but the posts all concern Bertram Goodhue, the architect of the Los Angeles Central Library.

. . .and not one post on the Goodhue Baking Co.

Does anyone know where this bakery company was located?

The 1909 and 1910 CDs have the Goodhue Baking Co (C F & R T Goodhue) located at 1138 W 17th Street. It was run by Chas F Goodhue of 3432 Budlong Avenue and Ralph T Goodhue of 2706 S Normandie Avenue. Both are listed as bakers in the 1908 CD, but there's no business address.

It looks like Charles must've died around 1910, because the 1911 CD has his widow, Vashti C Goodhue listed as president and Ralph as VP. Ralph is still listed as a baker in 1915, but I couldn't find the bakery. BTW Ralph appears to have moved in with Vashti. I didn't look any later.

When I was young, we acquired a cat called Vashti (named by the original owners). I believe that Vashti was a queen of Persia.

Mr. Goodhue died of apoplexy as well:

He died just about a year after this item:

About 1138 W. 17th (I wonder if the house behind the delivery wagon in the original photo is perhaps the Goodhue home on W. 17th?), we have some Maurices and Mauricios to talk about:

1906 CD: Maurice C. Mauricio, baker, Superior Bakery, res 1138 W. 17th (the Superior Bakery itself was at 442 S. Spring)

1907 CD: Maurice C. Mauricio, baker, at 1138 W 17th

[Goodhue years intervene at the address]

1912 CD: Maurice C. Mauricio (Mauricio & Fox) at 1138 W. 17th

1913 CD: We find at 1138 W. 17th Maurice C. Mauricio as well as Anthony Maurice machinist
