...

-what are those silver tanks on the left?

I can't find out what they were, but I can show you where they were. The aerial view below is from 1964, but the dome and the two large cylinders next to it are visible from 1952 to 1994 (the dome seems to appear between 1948 and 1952). According to loopnet.com, the current building at 2088 S Compton Avenue (the rough location of the tanks) was completed in 2003. Addresses in this block are mysteriously absent from the City Directories. The 1956 CD has the following listing for the north-east corner, but that's about it.

2015 Long Beach Av Shell Oil Co garage. MA 5-2760
2015 Long Bch Av Shell Oil Co sales orders & deliveries Garage. MA 5-1403

It's not clear if Shell owned the whole site or just the top edge. The current business at that address is DeWitt Petroleum, a fleet fuels business whose site stretches along E 20th Street from S Compton Avenue to Long Beach Avenue.

At first I thought it was the old jail, but then I noticed the peaked 'turret' on the left side corner of the building. Are we actually looking at two buildings here?

(could it be the old U.S. Hotel?)

That's the Amestoy Block, seen here in 1955. I'm sure we must has seen this image before on NLA, but a quick search only turned up a similar black and white shot from the LA Times (there were many other images and posts about the Amestoy Hotel/Block). It was finally demolished in 1958.

the Amestoy survived much longer than the U.S. Hotel, so I should have known. (I was close though ;))

The pix on 12th st were at the LARy -LATL-LAMTA storage yard which occupied much of the block on the west side of 12th. behind the photographers. Herald Express had a giant sign across the building which faced the yard- I always assumed that was the place where the newspapers got printed

In this second view, there is a brief glimpse of a Herald Express sign on the building to the right of the Hotel Houston.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...905/9kYgpM.png
old file / unknown film

So there are Herald Express signs on both sides of the Hotel Houston. Why I wonder?...were their offices nearby?
(or is that their offices in the smallish building to the left of the hotel)-as shown in the original black-&-white photo.

-not that big of a deal...but interesting none-the-less.

There's a map here

Redondo Beach was reached by two electric lines and the Santa Fe Railroad-
Los Angeles and Redondo had the more direct route, proceeding inland. Los Angeles Pacific skirted the surf north to Del Rey [like the pic], thence eastward via Culver to 5th and Hill sts. Can't tell you about the oil wells, except at sometime there were wells in Venice, just north of Del Rey. LA&R was split between the PE and LARy , PE built a shortcut to Watts and that portion to Redondo was standard gaged. The part north of that remained narrow LARy until service ended ca 1955. ex LAP service to Redondo ended 1940

I found that (the? a?) Googie's was in front of (?) Schwab's Pharmacy.

http://blogs.getty.edu/iris/files/20...ner_googie.jpg from blogs.getty.edu. (http://blogs.getty.edu/iris/files/20...ner_googie.jpg)

Wikipedia says that Schwab's Pharmacy was located at 8024 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.

Both the Googie's facade and the rest of the corner appear to be different in this pic from the previously posted pic, so perhaps there was more than one?

What a fantastic picture. I think the "HOTEL" sign belonged to the El Rey. Here's a postcard I originally posted in part 3 of my Citizens Trust and Savings Bank round-up.

The old Metropolitan Warehouse building at 1340 E 6th Street seems to fit the bill for the white building with the tower. I tried to find an old photo to see if it once had a clock in the tower, but so far I haven't found one.

If I remember well, the Amestoy was the first building to have an elevator. This seems not really useful for only two floors above the first.

1902 Electric Bill. $2.35 for 9 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Curious, aside from lighting, what else was being electrically powered.

Electric iron, fan, vacuum cleaner, kettle, oven, sewing machine and chair were allegedly invented before 1902. http://www.localhistories.org/electric.html Unclear what was generally available in Los Angeles.

So I went looking for the Grant Building, and I was reminded of the now low-rise character of the Broadway
streetscape between 3rd and 4th. Much of it seems to be taxpayers, at least for the moment, anyway. At
first, the Grant appeared to be gone along with the shoe. But... the curve... eight windows on the 4th
Street side, five along Broadway... it looks as though that it might not be gone entirely:

Kilowattage on Broadway. Details right down to the road apples.

More of the Grant Building.

That's not quite 4th & Broadway. The street sign says Hill St., so that's 4th and Hill, looking toward Broadway. Great pic, though!
