Time to hop in the google-mobile and find this beauty.

This statue, which is 105 years old, has a very interesting history. I won't post all of it, due to forum rules, but you can read it here (link below):

http://www.metnews.com/articles/2006...ives103006.htm

It's Stephen M. White, the "Father of Los Angeles Harbor."

Quote:

The statue was moved to its present location, at the entrance to Cabrillo Beach off Stephen M. White Drive, on Feb 23, 1989. A report in the San Pedro News Pilot says:

“Thanks to the persistence of local residents and family descendants, the 81-year-old bronze statue of the former U.S. senator responsible for locating a federal breakwater in San Pedro was finally unveiled Thursday at its new spot overlooking the now thriving harbor.”
After trying for decades to move the statue, they finally did it!

I love these color photographs e_r. It's the closest to actually being there back then.

This is the campus of LA Trade Tech College, c. 1958/59. I can pin point to that time because the picture predates the culinary arts’ building that was opened around 61/62. The campus had been converted from the original Polytechnic High School in the mid 50’s. I attended some design classes there from 1960 to 62.
The old buildings that are no longer standing include the old high school gym (white bldg. to extreme left on photo and the engineering design building to the right of the gym (peeking out from behind the three story building that is left of center). Looking at Google Maps, most of the other buildings are still in place. The old original high school was built about 1905 and was replaced by those shown here – I’m guessing after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. There are many photos of that original campus and if I’m not mistaken including some on this forum.
Anyone have more history on the high school as it evolved?

This is terribly interesting T2. As horrific as Eugenics was, I still find it fascinating.

That's the American Cement Building, 2404 Wilshire. The American Cement Corporation was headquartered there until the late 70's. I guess the exterior reflects the company's desire to show how "pretty" cement is. It's been lofted and is often used as a shooting location ("Kill Bill",etc).

Thanks so-cal-bear. To be honest I don't mind this mid-century building at all; in fact I kind of like it. (despite the podium)
