Lorendoc, about the two-way traffic on Santa Monica Blvd.: Your post, HERE, you mentioned that HossC responded to, references two photos, one from 1933 that shows two-way traffic on each side, and one from 1950 that does not.
This came up again because of the "Double Standard" photo from 1963-64 and if that stretch had two-way traffic at that particular time. We can't see the entire area in that photo, but the SMB road we can see has a double line painted down the center of it which wouldn't make sense if it wasn't two-way traffic on that side at least, would it? (We can't see the other side, but I noticed that there seems to be head-in parking in the center which I'd never noticed there in any other photos of that area.) Quote:
https://www.lamag.com/wp-content/upl.../dantanas6.jpg [Click photo for a larger size.] L.A. Magazine posted the photo in an article, dating it 1964. It's logical to assume that whatever is shown on the left side of the Double Standard photo was after these tracks were removed and could also date that photo specifically to 1964 or even 1965, depending on several things. |

Remember this kid? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/ItgunI.jpg eBay Well, he just showed up on eBay with some FRIENDS. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/T1apVq.jpg eBay I believe it has sold already. How cool is that? :) . |

Here's an exceptional OOAK (one of a kind) photograph. "LOS ANGELES 1901 Original Photo WELL DRILLING EQPT STORE Third Street California" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/ULP3VY.jpg eBay From the seller: "1901 Original (one-of-a-kind) uncaptioned gelatin silver sepia-toned amateur photograph. ~ in the background is a 1-story "deep" store with signage: "Pacific Agent, Kelly Taneyhill & Woodruff Co. Well Drilling Machinery...Pumps, Tanks, Tools, Pipe, Windmills" ~ in the foreground a teamster is bending over tending to something beneath his 4-horse team wagon that is loaded with supplies; a smaller, empty wagon is behind this one, and there are dual railroad (trolley line?) tracks in the foreground ~ in a search of Los Angeles Herald online archives, I found multiple advertising references to Kelly Taneyhill & Woodruff Co, located at 268 Los Angeles Street - at the corner of "Third & Los Angeles Streets" - all articles were dated 1901" Very interesting. . |

Mystery location. Orig 1950s Los Angeles? California DEE 2.5" Photo Negative..(link below photo) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Tvitkp.jpg Link The house on the hill looks vaguely familiar but I can't quite place it. Here's a closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/aJnoHP.jpg detail Does DEE ring a hell to anyone? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/ZAeSlO.jpg detail Good luck minions! :whip: . |

And here's another. (mystery location) Orig 1950s Los Angeles California Street Scene LA CA 2.5" Photo Negative https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/yxZMYJ.jpg Link Let's take a slightly (and clearer) closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/AWA2Ho.jpg detail I'd say the key clue is 'Pacific'. Unless I'm mistaken, the apartments on the right are named Pacific Apartment. (of course there's also the Pacific Market down the street) . |
I'm thinking it might be the bar you tie up the horse reigns to?

Also the Marina Sports Center. That must be in some old phone book. Could this be near Marina del Rey? When was that constructed? |

Looks like El Sereno to me. Has that vibe. Probably within a few miles anyway. |

Concur enough with CaliNative that I'll climb out on a limb and state my belief that the photographer is standing with his (likely) back to Valley Blvd. (note the billboards halfway up the right edge of the frame) just beyond Eastern Ave. and is shooting northeasterly across the SP Sunset Route main line (note the signal bridge halfway up the left edge of the frame) and across Alhambra Ave. (note the low white posts for the guard rail) toward the low buildings at the bottom of the knoll in the center of the image. I'm not sure what the photographer was trying to capture, let alone why. Santa Fe wines were popular in L.A. back in the day, but there doesn't seem to be anything more solid than labels for sale on-line. I wasn't able to turn up a "Dee" commercial reference in the neighborhood via the CD. But the railroad location with respect to streets and the knoll look to me to be about as definitive as I can get. As near as I can make out the license plates on the cars in the "Dee" lot, the image seems to date from about 1941. Further thoughts? |

Here's the results of my surveillance mission. The statue in question no longer resides in the courtyard. Instead there's an odd fountain. (Disregard the young woman in black, facing away from the camera.) https://i.postimg.cc/YkvT40Lz/Fountain-1.jpg The curious fountain appears to be a figure of a tyke dressed as a firefighter, with a trickle of water continuously flowing from the firehose he's holding. https://i.postimg.cc/TYqtXZ7C/Fountain-2.jpg (At first glance I thought it was one of those "peeing cherub" statues. Couldn't quite figure out what it was supposed to be until I got home and examined the photo I took.) |

Also, is that a round "Polly Gas" sign by the road in the distance? Cheers, Earl |
