At first I thought you had the street numbers wrong until I realized a LARGE residence has recently been built on the empty lot behind the boy on his bike. This place. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/pr4MQt.jpg ......The three homes (visible in the 1954 photograph) are farther down the street and partially hidden by foliage.:previous: It's hard to believe it fit on this lot. v v v https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/FT1yJT.jpg Let's get our bearings. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/IfhQsT.jpg As you can see the boy is riding his bike giggle between the family's home (circled) and the three homes in the distance (rectangle). You may also note: The old right-of-way for red line streetcars (now a popular hiking path) is below the family's home. Hmm, were red cars still running on the line in 1954? sidenote: The red line right-a-way led to the old Fletcher Ave Viaduct. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/sH15l5.jpg redcarproperty |

Under construction, September 2007: https://i.postimg.cc/5tYb7khh/Silver-Ridge.jpg gsv Looking good, December 2020: https://i.postimg.cc/pr2NH0SX/Silver-Ridge2.jpg gsv Would make a good Noirish LA Clubhouse. It's a little out of the way; but maybe we could persuade them to re-open and run the red car route there for our convenience . . . ? |
Hmm, were red cars still running on the line in 1954?
Last red car to Glendale and Burbank ran in the wee hours of Sunday, June 19, 1955. |

:previous:... :( While we're in the neighborhood let's stay on Lake View Avenue. I don't believe we have seen this intriguing photograph. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/t4vFBK.jpg redcarproperty "Photo shot from 2338 Lake View Ave facing northwest." You know me. :) We have to take a closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/YsRphb.jpg Wouldn't it be great to snoop around that backyard! ........................................................................I'll repeat this part: We're looking northwest from 2338 Lake View Ave. Here's how the backyard looks today. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/wvVBk9.jpg GSV That's the Corralitas Red Car Property on the right. - - - > Link . |

Here's something NOT in the Lake View Ave. area. Check out these amateur slides of the crosswalk apparatus at MGM Studios in Culver City, 1950(?). (sorry, they're poorly scanned) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/1AHlhC.jpg eBay (sold) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/Camsva.jpg eBay (sold) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/ok3S5a.jpg eBay (sold) A closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/fLdDRe.jpg detail MGM closed this entrance in the. .um. .1960s(?). I imagine the crosswalk signals were removed at that point in time.. . |

:previous: The eBay slides show the north gate on Washington Boulevard. The is the side with the colonnades. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/UxwC7p.jpg culverhistoricalsociety (undated) Hmm. . .the MGM Commissary is where it says 'Art Dept'. I have no idea when it was the Art Dept. . |
Actually that is an actual traffic signal. Pasadena at one time used them also.

Have we seen this photo before?
https://live.staticflickr.com/2912/1...31b54b28_b.jpgA Box of Pictures The Flickr account I saw this on lists it as Spring Street, but a Twitter source indicates it's a dirt road east of the Broadway tunnel, which sounds more likely. |

Might this site be, after the bulldozers came, what had been the above?: https://i.postimg.cc/zvCKh99C/Broadw...L-00115015.jpg LAPL, image 00115015 |
Justica?

Yes. Justicia.
North entrance to the Broadway tunnel just out of frame to the right. Justicia will be plowed under when they push Spring Street through to Sunset.

Here's the area in 1929. I believe that Justica is the unmade road starting near the center and heading toward the top of the image. For reference, the Hall of Justice is just left of center at the bottom of the image. NB. This is a merge of three separate aerial views. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...LAJustica1.jpg mil.library.ucsb.edu/mil.library.ucsb.edu/mil.library.ucsb.edu I found another image of Justica, similar to the one above, at the USCDL. I think we've probably seen it before. |
:previous:
I don't recall that USCDL photo, but if I've forgotten it, I'm glad to see it again! Odinthor, Bighen, MichaelRyerson and HossC: Thanks for all those great responses. |
Speaking of Justicia Street:

Well, over the years Justicia suffered the fate of so many early roadbeds being known by various names. At the time of Martin's original pic (dating by the late 20s/early 30s cars) Justicia while still known by most old timers as Justicia had also become known as Buena Vista and even N. Broadway (with which it aligned north of Sunset). From Sunset looking south, it reached all the way to Temple where it ended directly across from the County Courthouse. In Hoss' pic you can see Justicia as a dirt track coming from Sunset and being paved south of Ft. Moore Place. Notice all the parked cars from that point down to the courthouse (out of frame at the bottom) and alongside of the brand new Hall of Justice. This little street was always one of my personal favorites. |

I can see my house from here. |
I think that photo is from circa 1929. Union Station hasn't been built yet.
