If the source is accurate, this view is looking northeast on Wilton Place from Santa Monica Blvd., circa 1932-33. This would likely place it at 1110 N. Wilton Place, which was where the Sears Auto Store pictured above would have been. While the Sears was never the most attractive structure, there is no longer any trace of it. In fact, all of the structures have been raised according to GoogleMaps. FWIW, the single story structure at 1111 N Wilton was constructed in 1919 and moved to 3631 Westwood Bl around 1938 per BPs. https://www.google.com/maps/place/N+....3135802?hl=en http://digitallibrary.californiahist...%2C1906%2C2778http://digitallibrary.californiahistoricalsociety.org |

This 1928 aerial view isn't too far away in time from the CHS photo. Assuming that the caption's correct, I think the houses above are to the right of the word "Wilton". http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...SMBWilton1.jpg mil.library.ucsb.edu The Sears building appears to date from the early-50s (using Historic Aerials), and survived just long enough to be captured by the earliest Googlemobile in 2007. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...SMBWilton2.jpg GSV The building was stripped by 2009 (below) and completely cleared by 2017. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...SMBWilton3.jpg GSV |

I try not to go any higher than 1280 x 1024. (I might go larger if there is miniscule writing-like on a map) |
re: Screen-grabs from Perry Mason
The screenshot shown below was originally posted by GaylordWilshire (last week) HERE I thought it might be interesting to take a look at the buildings that have survived. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/0adhAV.jpg I placed a question mark on the whitish cottage/bungalow above, and behind, #2 and #3. (I can't decide if it's still there or not.) and today (numbers 4 and 5 are blocked by a large apartment bldg) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/BKkUOR.jpg GSV Here's a closer look at #1 (the original three windows and door have been blocked up) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/4DpI3f.jpg detail #2 and #3 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/2h08Cb.jpg #3 has aged especially well. #4 is up Allison Ave. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/U9Lrl1.jpg #5 is also on Allison Ave. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/Ifhi50.jpg |
mystery lot
Oh, and one more thing.
I'm curious about this empty lot next door to bldg. #1. (on Sunset Blvd opposite Vin Scully Ave.) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/mgzsAf.jpgGSV You can clearly see a foundation and some steps. Does anyone recall what used to be on this lot? _ |

:previous: Thanks for checking it out BillinGlendaleCA. An emply lot on Sunset Blvd. for over 90 years!
I wonder who owns it? |
Take a look at this amazing cyanotype.
"Vintage 1910 Cyanotype Print Japanese Style Arts & Craft House, Los Angeles" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/fWWkwS.jpg EBAY I immediately thought of the Bernheimer Residence in Hollywood. (now Yamashiro's), but it doesn't appear to match any of the buildings on the estate grounds (as far as I can tell) Perhaps the seller meant Pacific Palisades? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The same ebay seller also has this cyanotype. "Cyanotype of Bank Wall, Well-Dressed Man, Vose(?) St., 1899 Original Print" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/HjdU6Y.jpg ebay Written on the back: "BANK WALL, VOSE ST. ????, SEPT. 6, '99" Vose St. sounds somewhat familiar, but I could be thinking of Vignes St. Almost all of the seller's photographs are from the Far East / China (Peking, Hong Kong) except for these two cyanotypes. It makes me wonder if this second one might be from Los Angeles as well. __ |

The permits seem to reveal some auto-related businesses going up on the lot(s) in the '20s, and a possible demo in 1969, but otherwise the docs are a little murky, or at least need more study. One lot that has been empty forever is one we recently almost saw--fronting Wilshire between Irving and Bronson. There have been proposals for it, and right now it seems to be being used as a construction parking lot about which there is some controversy, but otherwise, barren. It would be at left, across Bronson from the Los Altos... Quote:

Dodger Stadium
Construction on the privately financed stadium began on September 17, 1959.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...313Sunset1.jpg GSV It's now been built on. The new building was looking quite normal... http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...313Sunset2.jpg GSV ...until the cladding was put on. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...313Sunset3.jpg GSV 1313 Sunset Boulevard was meant to look like this. No sign of the stripes yet. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...313Sunset4.jpg la.curbed.com The image above is from an article about the development at la.curbed.com. A 2013 article at theeastsiderla.com says that a 1921 bungalow at the right of the lot was demolished to make way for the apartments (it's hard to see it on earlier GSV images). More pictures and information can be found at 1313sunset.com. There was definitely a building on the left side of the plot until at least 1994, but I haven't found any decent images yet. |

Seems like a large lot for a (small?) bungalow. Thanks again, Andys |

Not too long ago I happened upon a photo album that included the Bernheimer Estate in Hollywood, as well as a mystery waterfall. All from 1920. #1 A fantastic look at the main house that, decades later, would become Yamashiro's restaurant. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/EsGGmD.jpg #2 The imported, centuries old, temple on the estate grounds. (easily the oldest structure in Los Angeles) Is it still standing? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/J3jK9o.jpg #3 WHOA... Giant people! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/ny5Oee.jpg Did they accidentally strayed onto a miniature golf course? ha ha ____________________________________________________________________________________________And here's the mystery pic. #4 Waterfall. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/CvT9Qx.jpg I think it's a real bird. This is the only one, of the four pics, that doesn't include Bernheimer Estate/Japanese Garden in the description. [see below] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/Rps1wq.jpg link coming / if it's still on ebay Of course none of this helps solve the cyanotype mystery. [1910] :( _ |
