:previous: It does look somewhat better.
Thanks t2. __ The interior is tasteful. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/KiQ5if.jpg http://www.iamnotastalker.com/2009/0...canso-gardens/ except for the wrinkled curtains. ;) (my mother would say...."maybe it's the material") __ |

Hmmm...maybe we humans don't have it over fish or birds when it comes to this house after all. A little institutional-looking. Interiors might be better-- yes, except for those curtains-- do you suppose the wrinkling and puddling is intentional? |
I'd call the exterior and interior "20th Century Faux Federal."
Sorry, couldn't resist. :-) Cheers, Earl |

I'm pretty convinced by everyone's thoughts so far, and looking at various things myself, that this is Los Angeles. Since the sailor has his duffle, he is probably walking over to Union Station, would be my guess. Since there's no one else around and a vague car in the distance, why the photographer was there is anyone's guess! |

The sailor is going on or returning from a weekend liberty because he's carryin what us Army guys called an AWOL bag. It has enough room to hold a weekend's supplies and is easy to carry on your lap on a bus or plane.
The real mystery is : How does he keep that cap on so far back on his head? Is it pinned there like a yarmulke? |

In this photo of the 1957 groundbreaking there's no streetlights or railings. I'm still lost (but I'm lost in LA): https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ej...2DA=w1366-h768 walknridela |

There's a strap at the bottom of those cameras that allows a leftie, or a rightie, to securely grip the camera. The fellow in the shot is attempting to hold the camera with fingers wrapped around the lens turret. He was probably told to look like he was filming the scene. Problem was, he no idea how to hold the camera. Plug this phrase into the Google and you'll see what I mean about the strap: "bell and howell news camera" |

That 'back of the head' look was finally banned in the 1960s as being very much out-of- uniform. It became a popular style in WW II and in movies but the Navy Brass did not like it. They said it looked too 'Hollywood' and they put an end to it. Here is actor Guy Madison [WW II Navyman] in the 1940s looking very sloppy and 'Hollywood'. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pslbq6n7qm.jpg farm8static flickr Guy was discovered by talent agent Henry Willson at a radio show taping in Hollywood. Guy was on leave from the Navy and in uniform. Willson was famous in Hollywood for lurking in the background of public events... looking for pretty boys he could sign for movie contracts. He often had more than just a casual professional interest in the fledgling actors. Willson was known for his stable of young, attractive clients, including Rock Hudson, Tab Hunter, Chad Everett, Robert Wagner, Nick Adams, Guy Madison, Troy Donahue, Mike Connors, Rory Calhoun, John Saxon, Clint Walker, Doug McClure, Dack Rambo, Ty Hardin, and John Derek. This photo was taken slightly more north than the sailor photo, and as noted it was taken from atop the Broadway tunnel before it was demolished. So the sailor photo as was surmised earlier by GW was taken from the new Hill Street, in between the freeway and the Fort Moore Memorial. |
