Speaking of Angels Flight...
Does anyone have the details regarding the changes made to the Angels Flight station up on Olive Street?
Here are the basics that I know (or think I know). When Angels Flight started about 1901, the Olive Street station was just a small shelter. I think this may be it next to the Elks building. http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...psddbcceff.jpg LAPL About 1910, this beautiful station was built. Here is a photo, which I believe Michael Ryerson posted (sorry if it was someone else). http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps3f45c4d7.jpg Here is where I start to get lost. By the early 1920's, the station was down to about one third of its size. What happened? It appears in this photo that the bottom of some of the pillars were still in place. http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps9844d6e7.jpg LAPL Then, maybe sometime in the 1930's or 1940's (again I don't know for sure), someone with absolutely no architectural ability tacked on the ugly addition which remains to this day. http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps28c49905.jpg LAPL Does anyone know what happened to the 1910 station and why was it never restored? ER - Pretty ironic that the movie sphinx also got buried in sand and had to be discovered by archaeologists. |

I'll have to look into it. Does anyone else remember that? __ |
My guess...

This picture gave me an headache : no way to identify what section of Downtown it is. The street on the back center/right seems to be Second Street but it wouldn't be cut by the buildings on the front. At last I had the idea to place a mirror in front of my screen and then it seemed to start to make sense. My guess : in the mirror we are looking East from Beaudry or Boylston to Court Street. |
:previous: AlvaroLegido, I believe I found the same building (left-foreground) in an old file of mine.
If I remember correctly this is a detail from a 1904 pano. (I'm looking for it now) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/913/kBB2ZK.jpg old file ..but in this view you can read the large painted sign on the north side of the building...it says Wieland's. More interesting are the two stubby chimneys. (they're missing in the 1909 sepia photo) __ |
1909 / right side of the original sepia photo
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/DrTVgN.jpg ebay I could be wrong, but I think this might be the same area as in the above photo (in the red rectangle). The twin white buildings give it away..as does the clump of trees, and the houses on the crest of the hill. 1904 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/2OOIJz.jpg detail/1904 And here is the original panorama / I just located it on a different CD I have. -titled "Looking west from downtown 1904" The buildings in the detail above must be far far away, or else I have the wrong pano. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/674/kKeVcZ.jpg old file / probably USC I'm going to USC archives to find the photo so I can provide a link / and to see if this is the correct pano. also so we can use their super-duper magnifier. :) __ |
just for fun...

Well spotted, Sweet Los Angeles. I was hoping someone would recognize the location, because it's been bugging me since e_r posted the original picture. Here's the full 1909 panorama from 7th and Hill. NB. I've increased the contrast. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...9.jpg~original Library of Congress Now I know where it is, I can work out what some of the buildings are! |

I was watching an episode last month and there was the yellow raincoated man on the tricycle at the base of Angel's Flight as it was descending and when it reached bottom he tipped over. I was surprised to see that. |

Thanks for locating that 1909 pano Sweet Los Angeles.
Flyingwedge reminded me that the building in the distance (with the green x) is the Westmoore Hotel at 7th and Francisco. The church (blue x) is the First Baptist Church at 725 S. Flower. 1904 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/674/jFr1Ff.jpg detail ...also visible is the Martz Flats at 7th & Flower. Here's the church around 1910 / originally posted by FlyingWedge http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/905/rVWYpk.jpg http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=12197 and here's the Westmoore http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/631/wd0WEg.jpg http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=12197 Go here for FW's complete post that's chock full of information. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=12197 You can see a 1915 color postcard of the Westmoore here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=11768 __ back to the top 1904 photo. What do you guy think...are the two rounded objections chimneys? They seem to be in such an odd spot. |
I'll repost this interesting article since it's relevant again.
