I wasn't aware Steve Hodel had a second 'Avenger' book out. I actually thought he had some interesting ideas in his 1st book....like the fertilizer & cement bags found at the murder site matching bags found at Hodel's Franklin Avenue home used during a renovation.
Also the fact that his father was an abortion doctor that had an office downtown not far from the Biltmore Hotel. Recently I've come across a few Elizabeth Short photographs that I hadn't seen before. The first two are snapshots from the summer of 1946...the first shows Ms. Short posing in the forecourt at Grauman's Chinese Theater. http://imageshack.us/a/img857/3685/a...aesgctbdih.jpg http://www.theblackdahliainhollywood.com/ ...in the second she is posing with an unidentified man (notice she has the same outfit on so it's probably from the same day). It doesn't take a sleuth to realize that this unidentified man probably took the first photograph and a stranger took the photograph below. http://imageshack.us/a/img812/277/aa...esrobertro.jpg http://www.theblackdahliainhollywood.com/ ____ And then there's this photo of a young women who strongly resembles Elizabeth Short at a cast party (location unknown). http://imageshack.us/a/img11/614/dah...lmurderdot.jpg http://www.dialmurder.com/author/kenton-ridgeway/ |
She really creeps me out. Too many pictures of her on the slab, I guess..

This has nothing to do with Elizabeth Short but it's interesting nevertheless.
http://imageshack.us/a/img809/471/19...vetowardro.jpg http://www.skyscrapercity.com/ below: The same view today. A vast amount of foliage now covers the hillside. http://imageshack.us/a/img98/8161/1928glendaleavet2.jpg google street view I 'google street viewed' my way up the hillside and found several of the homes that appear in the 1928 photograph.* http://imageshack.us/a/img171/5537/1928glendalea2h.jpg google street view http://imageshack.us/a/img845/471/19...vetowardro.jpg _____ *postscript: I've had this post ready for quite some time. After posting it today, I thought it might also be fun to find that bright white 'crenellated' building that appears down the street in the 1928 photograph. Long story short....I can't find the same intersection again and I'm beginning to think I might have gotten this it all wrong. Is it possible I have the wrong intersection and those aren't the same houses in the 1928 photo? This has been bugging me all afternoon. _____ |
:previous:
I did a little looking and that is the intersection of Glendale and Fletcher (and Silver Ridge). I think the white building you were wondering about is at 2621 Glendale Blvd., though the dense foliage prevents seeing it in Google Street View. :) |
Thx moxie...so I was correct..somehow.
Today on google maps it show Glendale Blvd. turning into Rowena Avenue up near Lakewood Ave. (red dot). Maybe when I first researched the old photo (several months ago) google maps had Glendale Blvd. morphing into Rowena Ave. down at Fletcher. It's a bit of a stretch I know. http://imageshack.us/a/img32/9805/aaacorrecta1.jpg google maps ..and you're right, 2621 does indeed look like the crenellated building seen in the 1928 photo. http://imageshack.us/a/img51/1337/aaaccren.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img191/471/19...vetowardro.jpg this photograph originally found on http://www.skyscrapercity.com/ You've helped to restore my sanity moxie. ____ |

Here is the crenellated building on Glendale Blvd--it's a 2-bedroom, 1-bath house-- and the three houses on Ivan Hill.... |

http://imageshack.us/a/img843/1920/aaslide1950sk2.jpg ebay I had never heard of Gude's so I did a little research and found out it was located on w. 7th street. http://imageshack.us/a/img804/3133/suscb.jpg http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/search...hit-m2196.html http://imageshack.us/a/img252/6707/spcs.jpg postcard http://imageshack.us/a/img27/1207/48121845.jpg ad ___ |

I had no idea they were all so close together. That 1928 photo is deceiving. |
Here's another ebay find.
pan right----> http://imageshack.us/a/img140/7564/a...ywoodvieww.jpg I've been trying to figure out the photographer's vantage point in this photo....initially I thought the wide street was Sunset Boulevard but Griffith Observatory (upper left hand corner) appears to be fairly close so maybe the wide street is Los Feliz Blvd. Either way it's a great photograph! Does anyone have the software to get rid of the 'watermark'? I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. :) ____ |
My weak attempt at Photoshop:

Here is an example of new and old side by side:
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/assets...CHS-43463?v=hr USC Digital Library Photograph of Standard Service station being remodeled, showing both old and new, 1971. In the center foreground, a multi-lane paved road is pictured, behind which a dirt lot is undergoing construction. At left, a framework for a building is visible, with a truck and front-end loader visible in front. At right, a complete station is pictured, a sign on it reading "Standard". A sign out front displays the gasoline prices "29.9" and "33.9". The top ridge of palm trees and mountains can be seen in the background. I really liked the gas prices! |
I don't think I've seen this view before:
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/assets...CHS-31362?v=hr USC Digital Library Photograph of an exterior view of the old Los Angeles County Hall of Records as seen from the west portico of City Hall, October 1, 1972. The Hall of Records is at center and is a large, light-colored building that splits into two sections halfway up to the top. Large rectangular windows line the perimeter of the building, and decorative molding can be seen near the top of the structure. A large building with hundreds of small windows can be seen at left. In the foreground, the tiled ceiling of the portico can be seen, along with several supporting columns. |
Odd:
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/assets...2-82-1999?v=hr USC Digital Library Photograph of a palm tree on the roof of a building, Los Angeles, ca.1999. A two or three story building stands behind a chain link fence that is topped with three rows of barbed wire. On top of the building a palm tree appears to be growing on the roof. There are several power lines nearby. |
Neat looking building on right.
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/assets...CHS-44002?v=hr USC Digital Library Photograph of buildings covered in grafitti on Sunset Boulevard, 1981. In the right foreground, a boarded-up brick building is covered in grafitti, some of which reads "13" and "Shorty". To the left, buildings that look like tract housing are also covered with writing. In the left distance, a skyscraper is under construction on Bunker Hill, while the County Health Department building is visible. |
Another neat shot of the Hall of Records:
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/assets...CHS-31361?v=hr USC Digital Records Photograph of a birdseye view of the old Los Angeles Hall of Records, looking south along Broadway, October 1, 1972. The Hall of Records is in the foreground at left. It is an old Gothic building with rows of rectangular windows and small columns on its walls. A dark, pointed roof can be seen on top of the tower. Broadway can be seen at right and is bustling with automotive traffic. In the background, several large buildings can be seen, including two skyscrapers in the distance at right. |

That's quite a swath (of course nowhere near the swath of the soon to be built Hollywood Freeway). |

I 'street-viewed' my way to Sunset Blvd. and lined up the buildings in the distance to match the 1981 photograph. Alas they're both gone replaced by a CVS and it's parking lot. http://imageshack.us/a/img577/6560/aaagone.jpg google street view |
