I wasn't aware Steve Hodel had a second 'Avenger' book out. I actually thought he had some interesting ideas in his 1st book....like the fertilizer & cement bags found at the murder site matching bags found at Hodel's Franklin Avenue home used during a renovation.
Also the fact that his father was an abortion doctor that had an office downtown not far from the Biltmore Hotel.


Recently I've come across a few Elizabeth Short photographs that I hadn't seen before.

The first two are snapshots from the summer of 1946...the first shows Ms. Short posing in the forecourt at Grauman's Chinese Theater.

...in the second she is posing with an unidentified man (notice she has the same outfit on so it's probably from the same day). It doesn't take a sleuth to realize that this unidentified man probably took the first photograph and a stranger took the photograph below.

And then there's this photo of a young women who strongly resembles Elizabeth Short at a cast party (location unknown).

*postscript: I've had this post ready for quite some time. After posting it today, I thought it might also be fun to find that bright white 'crenellated' building that appears down the street in the 1928 photograph. Long story short....I can't find the same intersection again and I'm beginning to think I might have gotten this it all wrong. Is it possible I have the wrong intersection and those aren't the same houses in the 1928 photo?

This has been bugging me all afternoon.

I did a little looking and that is the intersection of Glendale and Fletcher (and Silver Ridge). I think the white building you were wondering about is at 2621 Glendale Blvd., though the dense foliage prevents seeing it in Google Street View. :)

Today on google maps it show Glendale Blvd. turning into Rowena Avenue up near Lakewood Ave. (red dot). Maybe when I first
researched the old photo (several months ago) google maps had Glendale Blvd. morphing into Rowena Ave. down at Fletcher.
It's a bit of a stretch I know.

Here is the crenellated building on Glendale Blvd--it's a 2-bedroom, 1-bath house-- and the three houses on Ivan Hill....

You're welcome. Google often has things mislabeled, so I wouldn't worry about it. It's a great resource, but does have its flaws.

I've been trying to figure out the photographer's vantage point in this photo....initially I thought the wide street was Sunset Boulevard
but Griffith Observatory (upper left hand corner) appears to be fairly close so maybe the wide street is Los Feliz Blvd.

Either way it's a great photograph!

Does anyone have the software to get rid of the 'watermark'? I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. :)

I think that photograph was taken near the Hollywood Bowl looking east to capture the path of the went to be built Hollywood Freeway at the Highland and Cahuenga intersection. The curved street is Cahuenga running down to Hollywood on the right and the slight forked road at the far left is Cahuenga Terrace.

I think you're correct TMSteele. I just didn't expect Cahuenga to look so domineering in relation to everything else in it's vicinity.
That's quite a swath (of course nowhere near the swath of the soon to be built Hollywood Freeway).

I was hoping these building survived, especially the brick building on the right.
I 'street-viewed' my way to Sunset Blvd. and lined up the buildings in the distance to match the 1981 photograph.
Alas they're both gone replaced by a CVS and it's parking lot.
