I can't quite make out the name of the street...Sirhel?...Suhel? |

It's Sichel Street in Lincoln Heights. This 1880s house is still there minus the people in front. Outside stairs have been added, probably for a rental unit. Note the original front yard retaining wall. Hundreds of Victorian houses are still in the area. http://i1331.photobucket.com/albums/...ps998441b9.jpg http://i1331.photobucket.com/albums/...psee6c58e5.jpg GSV ____________ |

:previous: Beverly Hills was barely up and running by 1910--its population was probably not even a thousand in the 'teens, so Big Suzy's French Whorehouse would really have been hard to keep a secret. The town was all-new--it's not like it started out as an old Wild West town where there'd have been a good supply of painted ladies hanging on.... |

Los Angeles "Fantasie Movie Modern" Home
Movie art director, Cedric Gibbons' gate to his home. Stainless steel. Over the top....way over.
Santa Monica estate features five bedrooms, six bathrooms, an office, a gym, a lighted tennis court, and separate staff/guest quarters. It's been listed at $12.45 million in the past. Not true Art Deco style but rather a Futuristic Fantasist Dream. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps0746e9c9.jpg Huff.Post. |

The steel gate is a recent addition, not Gibbon's. The front door is a slab of unique stainless metal. Gibbons designed this home for Delores Del Rio. |
Here’s a photo of Doheny and Santa Monica; 1937
http://waterandpower.org/5%20Histori...onica_1937.jpgLAPL Here’s a photo of Doheny and Santa Monica; 1940's http://waterandpower.org/5%20Histori...oheny_1948.jpgLIFE Images You would not see any cars turning right currently as it’s been a continuation of westbound traffic on Santa Monica as far back as I know. There’s similar lanes for eastbound traffic on the other side of the track area. Here’s a photo of Doheny and Santa Monica, 1980 https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/25/126...6fad9b49_b.jpg Same area now, 2014 http://waterandpower.org/5%20Histori...oheny_2014.jpg Way off to the right where you see the power pole--the road you see behind it is Melrose Ave. In E_R’s post the other day of the Academy Awards Theater—that’s where it was located, probably where the building you can see is situated. The area you see between Melrose and Santa Monica is now called the Melrose Triangle and is most recently used for parking and selling Christmas trees in the fall. http://www.dougmoon.com/coventry3.jpg Here's an October 19, 2016, dashcam video of the intersection, beginning at Doheny Dr. and, after the light changes, it proceeds left (east) on Santa Monica Blvd. and travels down to just before Hancock Ave., your old street, E_R. In the next photo you’re gong to see a Standard Oil gas station in the Melrose Triangle area. http://montrealrampage.com/wp-conten...n-voyeur1.jpeg Vintage Los Angeles (VLA) VLA says this photo was taken by Dennis Hopper (no date) and he called it "Double Standard". You can see the Academy Awards Theater on Melrose on the far right. The following photo is taken from the opposite direction: http://www.wehoville.com/wp-content/...04561357_n.jpgWojcik/VLA It’s estimated to be from 1965. The P.E. tracks used for freight trains are still in place. You can see part of the Standard Gas Station on the left at the Melrose/Doheny/Santa Monica Blvd. intersection. On the right you can make out Doug Weston’s Troubadour and Dan Tana’s Restaurant, although they have different signs than the now recognizable ones…Doug Weston’s name is absent and the restaurant is smaller and just called Tana’s. Here’s a 1940’s view of when P.E. cars still ran and Dan Tana’s was known as Domenico’s Lucky Horseshoe Café. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lZdXyKzsMl...ana%27s%2B.jpgVLA A photo taken a few blocks away in 1972 on Santa Monica near La Cienega when the tracks were being removed altogether. (The Holloway Motel and IHOP on the right are still there.) https://www.hollywoodphotographs.com...50/SMB-019.jpg Torrence/Hollywood Photographs Back at the Melrose Triangle area, the view today from the park with the fountain: You can see artwork (always changing) on the median which also is a pedestrian area for running or walking. You can see the art deco veternarian hospital in the background, previously discussed. (FYI: I’ve never seen ANYONE on that path, although I walked down it once myself. http://static.panoramio.com/photos/large/72081775.jpg The view tomorrow? This is what the City of West Hollywood is proposing to foist upon the Melrose Triangle area. http://www.wehoville.com/wp-content/...eway-Night.jpg more here: http://www.wehoville.com/2014/02/27/...-gateway-weho/ |

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-H...2520AM.bmp.jpg Val's Coffee Shop was listed at 8875 Santa Monica Blvd in the 1951 phone book, the NE corner of San Vicente (building replaced)... and given its smaller individual and delicately framed windows and the rosettes, the current building couldn't be the one with the PE car and the Cadillac... |

Thanks, GW, re: your response above. I see that you are correct. I am going to eliminate that from the first part of the post.
The store that is located on the NE corner where Val's Coffee Shop was located at 8875 Santa Monica Blvd. is now "Don't Panic" and has taken the address of 802 N. San Vicente Blvd. |

Ah, the Villa Rosa was that far east? In that case, I had the wrong apartment house in mind. I was thinking of one that's on the Sunset Strip. I love the architectural style of the Sunfax Mart...and the name! |

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...Vine1961CD.jpg LAPL The building seems to have filled up by 1969 (when the Mad Men episode was set). http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...Vine1969CD.jpg LAPL The GSV images have a range of dates for this intersection. The earlier ones (circa 2009) show it with the "Academy Pacific Travel College" signage as in the picture below, while the later ones (circa 2011) show the signage missing. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...77VineAPTC.jpg www.luzzattocompany.com |
After years of going through vintage postcards, I finally found one for the Nirvana Apartments.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/835/qklb.jpg ebay The typography is reminiscent of art nouveau....and it looks like there used to be a 'pagoda'-like entryway near the front sidewalk. -which is missing in the modern view (below). http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/841/h47c.jpg GSV I found this newspaper clipping and pic dated May 19, 1940. (oddly, the sidewalk 'pagoda-entryway' is missing in it too) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/836/8b49.jpg http://ladailymirror.com/2012/09/03/...na-apartments/ We discussed the Nirvana Apts. on NLA back in 2011. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=3021 http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=3039 I thought there might be a few more posts but I was unable to find them. __ |
