It's sad what some of these vintage structures deal with in the span of their lifetimes.

Interesting find. This 1950 ad from the African-American owned Los Angeles Sentinel reflects the Supreme Court's 1948 decision in Shelley v. Kraemer invalidating race-based restrictive covenants on property deeds.

The verdict allowed integration in previously all-white neighborhoods in Los Angeles and elsewhere. The addresses on offer by the Crown Realty Co. were roughly bounded by Western and Vermont, and Jefferson and MLK (Santa Barbara). These neighborhoods SW of downtown were some of the first to be desegregated as a result of this decision.

The proprietor of the Wedding Manor on Western, the Rev. Julius Du Bose, was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Perhaps he felt uncomfortable with his new neighbors and decamped for whiter pastures, as it were.

ok so i spy a 67 buick electra...and a 68 ford galaxie with a vinyl top. I really want to say this is sunset junction looking west down santa monica...but this is for sure not 1960.

I think it's Hyperion Avenue between Udell Court and DeLongpre in Silverlake. Hehe I would know because of my years of going to Circus of Books as a youth. Plus, this would be on the way to Woody's Hyperion/MJ's from Sunset Blvd. Unfortunately, MJ's closed recently, so I've heard. I was just there the Sunday of Presidents' Day weekend too, at one of the foam parties. Wild!

At left, the streetlight--a replacement--has been moved down toward the fire hydrant, with a phone pole in the old spot. The same five phone poles are along Hyperion at right (always that question: how long do these poles last? I think we answered it here once--was it 40-50 years?). Laura's, behind the bushes above, is still there at 1903, or rather her building is--"Stargate"-- (The green crosses... I'm guessing this a pot shop?). Note the rusty pole to the left below, ER--the vintage shot makes it look a lot father from the building than it is--I assume it's in the same spot. I wonder where the musical note is today? Shredded, I guess.

The vintage photo didn't line up until I realized there are two Saks Fifth Avenue stores on Wilshire.
(three, if you want to count the one story annex that displaced the shops in the 1950s photograph).

I believe the newspaper photo is reversed. Many cars of that era had only one rear red light on the left side as we see in the large photo posted by ER. Link below.
