The W.C. Stuarts have a nice handful of mentions in the Los Angeles Times . . . but nothing of interest, almost always of the Social Happenings sort. Here's the most interesting:

I've found a time frame for Boureston's, but that's about all I can find. The following is from jassdancer.blogspot.com:
Boureston's is legendary among the greatest dancers to ever step foot on a floor in Los Angeles. Between the years 1943 and 1945, the weekly dance was the hottest location for the best to have their showdowns.
It must've been mentioned in the newspapers.

I've just noticed that their very similar matchbook has the phone number Axminister 9090.

121 year old trees! Thanks for pointing out the Jacarandas odinthor.

From the location of the trees, the Stuarts probably lived on the northwest corner. (replaced by apt. building)

The Bissell House, on the southwest corner, was built in 1887. (that pink Bissell House Bed & Breakfast thingy is pointing to the wrong house)

I corrected it with my skillfully drawn red arrow. ;)

I *thought* that looked like the church in Camarillo.

I'm thinking, though, that Ventura Blvd. through that section probably used to be the old Hwy. 101, which crosses the railroad tracks. Here's a Google Streetview from the Camarillo Metrolink station parking lot: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.2154...2!8i6656?hl=en

You're correct, this view is looking west down highway 101. Highway 101 was lined by eucalyptus trees east of Camarillo(the current freeway is just south of this and some of the trees are still there). It then crossed the tracks and went up the hill to intersect with what is now Ventura Blvd. The old tree lined road east of the city were used for the northbound freeway lanes for years

An additional number was added to phone numbers in the early 50's if I remember correctly. City Hall used to be MIchigan 5211 then was changed to MIchagan 4-5211, ours was NOrmandy 1525 then became NOrmandy 1-1525, funny how you can remember all these numbers from 50-60-70 years ago but you forget your anniversay date.

"What gets me most about this pic is how in shape everyone is compared to today". Well, this is Muscle Beach, so you would expect most people to be in shape. Would be like going to a yoga studio today & conclude that people today are in shape. There were plenty of fat people and blubber in the 1950s just like now. Depends where you look. But maybe the prevalence of obesity today (especially in poor communities) is due to the availability of food stamps (now called SNAP)? Food is easily available even for the poor, more than it was before the 1960s. So underfed and skinny people may be less common today, so maybe you are correct.

sopas ej Feb 13, 2019 3:12 PM

:previous:

Obesity is really more common now than it was back then.

Even when I was a kid, it seemed there weren't too many fat people. And when you saw one, they really stood out. When I was in elementary school, which was in the mid 70s-early 80s, there was only 1 fat kid in the class, and again, he stood out. And he wasn't even really fat, just "chubby."

Today, fat kids seem to be common, and nobody seems fazed by it.

I'm thinking because there's more fast food restaurants out there than ever, and people just don't cook at home... or when they do, they use processed food like instant potatoes or whatever. Not only is this contributing to obesity but also higher rates of diseases like cancer and high blood pressure. At a previous job I had, quite a number of people would bring those instant microwavable lunches to work and eat that for lunch. I'm sure those are really high in sodium and preservatives. I couldn't imagine doing that all the time.

Lomara Feb 13, 2019 6:38 PM

Don't forget that portion sizes today are larger than they were 50 years ago.

The Oct. 25, 1937 murder of L.A. wiseguy Les Bruneman was briefly covered in a couple of posts way back on pg. 425, but I don't believe we have seen the exterior of the murder location...a photo from that same year:

Getty Museum

Roost Cafe, 2700 W. Temple St.

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...pssell9zco.jpg

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...psovdzxdod.jpg

Bruneman was having a late dinner with his nurse (he was still recovering from gunshot wounds received in a hit that July outside of the Surf Club, a joint he owned in Redondo Beach)....a waiter in the cafe, who ran out to get the license plate of the getaway car, was also killed....J.H. Graham tells us the Bruneman story here:

https://jhgraham.com/2017/03/23/geor...man-1897-1937/

The Roost Cafe was the scene of another killing, this one a botched robbery on 6/26/53, featured in James Ellroy's photo-essay book "L.A.P.D. '53" and recently covered here in the thread.

Sopas, you speak the truth. What you say resonates deeply with my molars.

I've recently gone through an aortic valve replacement dictated by nothing but a birth defect. The corrective operation left me functionally healthy but in a position where I must eat obsessively healthily in order to get back on track, and the fact is that to do that I am forced to eat home cooking constantly in order to avoid excess salt and sugar.

And let me emphasize that even now I have no vascular damage. I have never had a cholesterol issue, and I have NO plaque blockage.

Heart issues can frag you violently at any point, despite your best efforts. They can lead to both stroke and lung issues well before the true source is determined. Don't ask me how I know.

The bottom line is that if you want to live and love as long as you can, eat to live--as opposed to living to eat. And I want all of you to live as long as you can. ESPECIALLY you all. I depend upon you daily.

The loving is at your discretion.

I don't think Brookside ever extended south of the Colorado Street bridge, that's Lower Arroyo Park.

The little building(poolhouse) still seems to be there(at least the size and shape is the same) and is the Pasadena Casting Club.

ETA: Being a good minion, I went back to look at what the Pasadena Casting Club was. It's Casting related to fishing, no casting couch. The building in ER's photo is the same one that's currently there, looking at the street view. The "swimming pool" is what the club used for casting, it seems to be bigger now than in ER's photo.

The Crosby Building (Bing) has recently been submitted for historic preservation because a developer wants to build another hotel there.

I believe the Crosby Building at 9034 Sunset Blvd., near Doheny, has been mentioned on NLA previously:

1938 image from Playground to the Stars:
http://www.playgroundtothestars.com/...38-676x507.jpg

This is what the developer wants to build, complete with a helipad on the roof: It's a twister!

https://www.wehoville.com/wp-content...et-508x600.png

May I ask, have architects lost their minds lately? Are they inspired by Frank Gehry?
This looks like a melted version of the Capitol Records building.

https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/Rnzt...11x17_47.0.jpg

If you look at the above rendering it looks like they either surrounded and remodeled the Crosby building or just paid an homage to it.
Because of the Crosby Building being submitted for historic preservation, the developer has submitted a design proposal, below, to keep the building, but move it over to the east.

I believe the Crosby Building at 9034 Sunset Blvd., near Doheny, has been mentioned on NLA previously:

My favorite Crosby Building story: it was once home to Daystar Productions, one of the production companies behind the original Outer Limits show. Some sound effects work was done there, and the equipment they used (exotic for the time) had the unintended effect of broadcasting the sounds a short distance. So if you happened to be driving by the Crosby Building at the right time in 1963, and if your car radio happened to be on, you might have heard a very distorted and distinctly alien voice intoning: "Electromagnetic forces underlying all. Matter, space, time, all the same. Infinity is God."

Also, I love how the artistic renderings of the proposed new building depict almost no traffic whatsoever. That's some genuine science fiction!

Whenever I come across souvenir photographs from the Florentine Gardens I search the room to see if Elizabeth Short among the patrons.

I do the same, but Elizabeth Short was in Florida from December, 1943 until December, 1945, with trips to Georgia and Massachusetts in between. She wasn't in California in 1944.

LOL! Man, that movie came out 39 years ago!

With all the changes in air travel since then, they certainly could come up with another one or do a remake!

Here's a closer look at the signatures.

How many can you decipher? (most are pretty easy...a few others, as you can see, are rather difficult)

I can't decipher the actual name, but I wonder which woman is the "Siren of the Miracle Mile?"

Man, wearing a rather short neck tie, posing next to an automobile in Los Angeles, 1930. [note the unique headlights]

EBAY no longer listed

There is something interesting that I didn't notice until I happened upon this next photograph. [below]

:previous: What, pray tell, is that fan-shaped 'contraption' under the car? (next to, and behind, the woman's leg)

If the car was parked on a hill..I'd say it's to stop the car from rolling. (but, as you can see, the street is perfectly flat) -see above

HERE'S A CLOSER LOOK.

It looks likes something you'd find in front of a fireplace.

Has anyone seen one of these contraptions before?

Is that a Packard at the right in the photo? Anyone know?

ethereal_reality Feb 18, 2019 12:26 AM

:previous: my mom says it's a Packard. (but she can't see very well)

Your mom is correct. The car with the Woodlites and the who-knows-what under its right front is also a Packard. I thought we'd seen them more recently here on NLA, but here are 2014 priors of yours and mine ER:

That's a Ruxton. Front wheel drive and also a make that used the unusual "Woodlite" headlights. Who's the gal? Hmmm...somewhere on the thread I think we might have seen this pic--the "45th St" and what appears to be "1st Ave" signs look familiar. Looks like a movie lot.

Ok, my brain is having some issues, so am throwing myself on the mercy of the most excellent researchers there are. I'm doing some work on early Hill Street and a couple pictures are confounding me. Any input would be appreciated.

These two Widney houses. Here's this image of Joseph Widney's pad at 321 S Hill.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7879/...f3662b2d_o.jpgusc

Problem is, here's the 1888 Sanborn. 321, bottom, doesn't look much like it, other than the bay window on the south side. I'm thinking the image was shot earlier in the 80s (JP seems to have moved to 321 in '83, see below) and then made an addition to it (stretching out the north side of the facade to the east) between then and '88. Thoughts? And what do we think is up there on the hillside?

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7823/...b5cd83cf_o.png

Now also at USC is this image of "Judge Widney"'s residence. See how much it looks like 321's neighbor, on the Sanborn.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7807/...301aec14_o.jpgusc

Sure looks like 317 (or whatever that address is between 321 and 309) to me, but there's no listing for a Widney there, but there is a listing for a Widney at 309 (they say Robert lives there but in the same '83 listing say he lives on Hill "between Fourth and Fifth"), but 309 doesn't look like this on the Sanborn. Opinions?

A roundup of Widneys moving about in the 80s:

Thanks in advance!

Mothers know things.

That ''thing'' under the car could just be a random newspaper.
