I wasn't aware Steve Hodel had a second 'Avenger' book out. I actually thought he had some interesting ideas in his 1st book....like the fertilizer & cement bags found at the murder site matching bags found at Hodel's Franklin Avenue home used during a renovation.
Also the fact that his father was an abortion doctor that had an office downtown not far from the Biltmore Hotel.

Recently I've come across a few Elizabeth Short photographs that I hadn't seen before.

The first two are snapshots from the summer of 1946...the first shows Ms. Short posing in the forecourt at Grauman's Chinese Theater.

http://www.theblackdahliainhollywood.com/

...in the second she is posing with an unidentified man (notice she has the same outfit on so it's probably from the same day). It doesn't take a sleuth to realize that this unidentified man probably took the first photograph and a stranger took the photograph below.

And then there's this photo of a young women who strongly resembles Elizabeth Short at a cast party (location unknown).

She really creeps me out. Too many pictures of her on the slab, I guess..

This has nothing to do with Elizabeth Short but it's interesting nevertheless.

*postscript: I've had this post ready for quite some time. After posting it today, I thought it might also be fun to find that bright white 'crenellated' building that appears down the street in the 1928 photograph. Long story short....I can't find the same intersection again and I'm beginning to think I might have gotten this it all wrong. Is it possible I have the wrong intersection and those aren't the same houses in the 1928 photo?

This has been bugging me all afternoon.

I did a little looking and that is the intersection of Glendale and Fletcher (and Silver Ridge). I think the white building you were wondering about is at 2621 Glendale Blvd., though the dense foliage prevents seeing it in Google Street View. :)

ethereal_reality Apr 14, 2012 12:09 AM

Thx moxie...so I was correct..somehow.

Today on google maps it show Glendale Blvd. turning into Rowena Avenue up near Lakewood Ave. (red dot). Maybe when I first
researched the old photo (several months ago) google maps had Glendale Blvd. morphing into Rowena Ave. down at Fletcher.
It's a bit of a stretch I know.

..and you're right, 2621 does indeed look like the crenellated building seen in the 1928 photo.

You're welcome. Google often has things mislabeled, so I wouldn't worry about it. It's a great resource, but does have its flaws.

I've been trying to figure out the photographer's vantage point in this photo....initially I thought the wide street was Sunset Boulevard
but Griffith Observatory (upper left hand corner) appears to be fairly close so maybe the wide street is Los Feliz Blvd.

Either way it's a great photograph!

Does anyone have the software to get rid of the 'watermark'? I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. :)

Here is an example of new and old side by side:

Photograph of Standard Service station being remodeled, showing both old and new, 1971. In the center foreground, a multi-lane paved road is pictured, behind which a dirt lot is undergoing construction. At left, a framework for a building is visible, with a truck and front-end loader visible in front. At right, a complete station is pictured, a sign on it reading "Standard". A sign out front displays the gasoline prices "29.9" and "33.9". The top ridge of palm trees and mountains can be seen in the background.

I really liked the gas prices!

I don't think I've seen this view before:
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/assets...CHS-31362?v=hr USC Digital Library

Photograph of an exterior view of the old Los Angeles County Hall of Records as seen from the west portico of City Hall, October 1, 1972. The Hall of Records is at center and is a large, light-colored building that splits into two sections halfway up to the top. Large rectangular windows line the perimeter of the building, and decorative molding can be seen near the top of the structure. A large building with hundreds of small windows can be seen at left. In the foreground, the tiled ceiling of the portico can be seen, along with several supporting columns.

Photograph of a palm tree on the roof of a building, Los Angeles, ca.1999. A two or three story building stands behind a chain link fence that is topped with three rows of barbed wire. On top of the building a palm tree appears to be growing on the roof. There are several power lines nearby.

In the left distance, a skyscraper is under construction on Bunker Hill, while the County Health Department building is visible.

Photograph of a birdseye view of the old Los Angeles Hall of Records, looking south along Broadway, October 1, 1972. The Hall of Records is in the foreground at left. It is an old Gothic building with rows of rectangular windows and small columns on its walls. A dark, pointed roof can be seen on top of the tower. Broadway can be seen at right and is bustling with automotive traffic. In the background, several large buildings can be seen, including two skyscrapers in the distance at right.

I think you're correct TMSteele. I just didn't expect Cahuenga to look so domineering in relation to everything else in it's vicinity.
That's quite a swath (of course nowhere near the swath of the soon to be built Hollywood Freeway).

http://la.remap.ucla.edu/remappingla...serialNumber=3Remapping-LA

Thomas Breneman Smith (June 18, 1901 – April 28, 1948) was a popular 1940s American radio personality known to his listeners as Tom Breneman.

Born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Breneman was host of the show Breakfast in Hollywood which aired on the Blue Network, ABC, NBC and Mutual at various times from 1941 to 1948.[1]

Breneman's program went through numerous title changes but was best known as Breakfast in Hollywood (1948-49). By the mid-1940s, Breneman had ten million listeners. The popularity of the radio program was such that he created his own magazine, and in 1945 he opened his own establishment, Tom Breneman's Restaurant, located on Vine Street off Sunset Boulevard.[1]

He died in Encino, California in 1948. Breneman has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

This location was approximately 1150 S Temple Street. By the late 1990s the location between 1st and Tempe, and Beaudry and Boylston was about 50% vacant lots. The whole area was pretty well run down. I guess the Temple Urban Renewal project stalled but property owners were apprehensive about maintaining their properties. When the city finally started activity on the high school, the buildings in this area started to get demolished one by one. But it wasn't like a bulldozer came in to clear the land. Some of the buildings were 'disassembled', and the wood and bricks stacked up on trucks for reuse. I.e. reclaimed lumber and reclaimed bricks. There was at least one building on Mignonette where a car was found buried in the backyard.

Edit, on second thought, I am wrong about the location. It is on Sunset ... my bad. There was a building very similar to this on Temple. I am just confused because I used to live in this area and spent a lot of time walking around, and recall that facade.

Here is a great snapshot I found on ebay a couple months ago. Does anyone have an idea where this precarious vantage point is located?

It's difficult to find photographs of Pandora's Box or anything else in this area of Sunset Boulevard during the so called 'Summer of Love'.
There's also a glimpse of the revolving Bullwinkle!

I was just there Monday and took a picture out the west Portico as well. Here's another link to my collection: https://plus.google.com/photos/10587...57782495364385
