They serve all of the old American-Chinese classics that you can't find anywhere else anymore, such as Egg Foo Yung.

I describe this place to my friends by saying “ever seen a 1970s movie where the cops are staked out and they're eating Chinese food from a cardboard carton? This is the food they're eating.”

Your mileage may vary, but to my taste buds at least, this stuff is identical to the Chinese food you used to get “back in the day”. And I took my mom to Won Kok before she died, and she fully agreed with my assessment.

I noticed they received a "B" grade from the health department - which is a GOOD thing, as many traditional Chinese preparations do not meet current health codes.

Another "old school" Chinese place is Paul's Kitchen on San Pedro around 11th or 12th st. I haven't been there in a few years (I hope they're still there). Walking in is a step back to the 1970's. They even have Pressed Duck on the menu!

That list is amazing. I didn't even make it to the end. It's interesting that #21 includes plans to redevelop part of the World Trade Center on Bunker Hill. Have we now officially come full circle, or is it more accurate to say it never ends?

While searching for more information on friction drive I happened upon an illustration of a chasis for a Cartercar. (I've never heard of a Cartercar)

It clearly shows the two perpendicular discs of the friction drive.

Pretty cool, huh. :)

The Cartercar led me to the Woolwine Motor Car Company at 1142-1144 So. Olive Street.

Here's a group of fourslides that I recently saw on eBay.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/hzJe2l.jpg

I am especially intrigued by the slide at upper right.

What are the big signs at lower left? It looks like one is in front of an older sign.

The other three show the CBS Center on Sunset and NBC Radio City at Vine & Sunset.

And this is a more recent picture of Echo Park Avenue at Delta Street. I had to go back to 2012 to get the Googlemobile on the correct side of the street. The white house on the left of the screengrab above is also still standing down towards Scott Avenue.

This is meant to be the opposite side of the hill, but, of course, it may well have been somewhere else.

This one.
We're looking south toward the intersection of Hollywood & Vine.

What's going on with the large signs in the foreground on the left?.... One sign appears to be directly in front of an older sign.

The other three slides show CBS Columbia Square at 6121 Sunset and NBC Radio City at Vine & Sunset. .both of which we have seen many times on NLA.

The tracks near Venice Boulevard serve the Venice Short Line and those seen behind the station serve the Redondo via Playa del Rey Line."

:previous: post referencing rail stations rekindled thoughts of another NLA discussion concerning the Palms Depot. This video includes glimpses of Palms Depot at 10223 National Blvd. circa 1928. "The Ol' Gray Hoss" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJtH9znL9LU

Speaking of Culver City, is anyone familiar with "Hotel Lone Wolf?" This video purports to depict the back of that structure at or near 8874 Washington Blvd., circa 1924 from the Our Gang short "Fast Company." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5HIxn3Sx4w Perhaps the structure had different names, but in any event, it looks substantial enough to have warranted some NLA attention. No obvious CD listing.

I'll end with a link to another fascinating (~100 year old) video that has been around for a few years, but I do not recall seeing it on NLA: A tour of the Ince Studio, circa 1920: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y69jRBbmZjM

A quick search reveals black/white photos of these here in the annals of NLA, but I don't see color versions, which I recently added to my collection:

I wonder how much research the colorists at the postcard photo labs put into their work on the matter of accuracy . . . ? No doubt it varies with different companies/different eras.

Sometime in the 1970s, the brand went away in SoCal. I believe some were converted to Vons. Luckys stores were also starting to appear in the 1970s (later coverted to Albertson's). Ralphs stores (now owned by Kroger) were also common. Does anybody know if L.A. ever had Piggly Wiggly stores? Common in the southeast. Piggly Wiggly was the first supermarket chain I believe. Proto-Costco type stores were also present in the 1960s--things like Fedmart. Akron stores were also around in the 1960s. Sold a lot of cheap imported stuff. Woolworth and Grant dime stores were still around, but getting a bit dated. Thrifty drugstores and Thriftymart general stores were everywhere too. Sears was still the #1 department store back then.

BifRayRock posted a few pictures of Piggly Wiggly locations in 2013.

A quick search revealed that BRR also mentioned a Wilshire Blvd. Piggly Wiggly and a La Brea Ave. Piggly Wiggly. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=7504

The sign-in-front-of-another-sign

Regarding the slide that features what appears to be one sign in front of another, I think that the "front" sign is a framing device and the "rear" sign is a recessed shadow box. They were common back then, if I am not mistaken. The angle the photo i taken from seems to be an optical illusion.

Thanks, good find. Someone always sleuths out these things on "Noirish L.A." no matter how obscure. So, the L.A. area was blessed (?) by PWs. I don't remember them (born in '52) so they must have been uncommon or gone by the late 1950s/early 1960s, or maybe not in the SF Valley, where I spent most of my larval stage. I remember the Richfield tower in all it's glory, and Brew 102 and the giant gasometer towers, and smog alerts (gasp) and bomb drop drills (double gasp) and the old gothic Hall of Records and Pacific Ocean Park ("POP") and "77 Sunset Strip" and "Father Knows Best" and "Leave It To Beaver" and "My 3 Sons" ("Chip" went to my high school in NoHo) and "Dobie Gillis" and beatniks and juvenile delinquents with switch blades and leather jackets and all the girls in pony tails and we boys in crew cuts and Davy Crockett raccoon caps and Chinese eateries that served chop suey and egg foo young and angry Hop Sing on "Bonanza" yelling at Hoss and Elvis was King and Marilyn M. was Queen but I don't remember Piggly Wigglies. A blank spot in my neural net. The pork products must have been especially choice at Piggly Ws.

This is clearly EVIDENCE Goverment-deployed Chem Trails have altered your brain to erase memories of Piggly-Wiggly. The question we should all be asking is "Why?"
