Ever since our discussion of this photograph...
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/ouqVrz.jpg http://www.pacificelectric.org/wp-co...ngton-1948.jpg I've been wondering if this building is the old P.E. Station. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/EfTL5k.jpg gsv It's in the same spot and bears a passing resemblance. detail http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/nh1ZgO.jpg It's a bit hard to tell, but I think the station was angled at the corner. If so, perhaps the angle was omitted by adding to the front (where the decorative 'rocks' wall is) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/ZOgEPD.jpg gsv / detail __ And to go even further out on the limb, could the building next to it possess remnants of the Rebel's Cocktail building? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/S8oZxc.jpg gsv http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/pqxGZT.jpg detail I could be way off the mark in both instances...but I thought I'd throw it out there and see what you noirisher thought. search purposes: Wilmington Pacific Electric Station, southwest corner of Avalon Blvd. and D Street. |
There's an existing Rebel's Cockail Lounge at 2216 S Pacific Avenue in San Pedro.

Wilmington area
During WWII there was some Coast Guard housing in Wilmington...wondering if anyone has any photos of it...

The remodels are backroom amateurish...could have been more thoughtfully designed. They took a nice building and made it look rather unappealing. The motto of my Design College days was ... "Its not what you add but what you leave out." Its was called 'good taste'. It seems as if good taste is a moribund idea today in 2016. Look at most of Frank Lloyd Wright's work. They look just as fresh today as they did almost a 100 years ago. |

"A Pacific Electric tower car passes in front of the Wilmington Pacific Electric and Southern Pacific passenger and freight station." http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original www.pacificelectric.org This one is from a finished eBay auction. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original eBay I also remembered this 1980 aerial from post #19874. I've added the arrow to mark the Wilmington station location. Trucker told us that the diagonal route was a Red Car right-of-way. That probably explains the missing buildings from Avalon Boulevard. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original Historic Aerials Although none of the aerial views show an empty lot where the station was, I don't think it's the same building. |

I like the glimpse of the building to the left of this one, too. Wonder what flag that is flying from the top of the building now? *** I found this: The property at 130 S. El Camino Drive was built in 1951 and formerly housed the offices of entertainer and business mogul Merv Griffin, broker Joshua Meltzer of the real estate firm Studley Inc. said. According to this: http://articles.latimes.com/2013/may...-sold-20130515 And this explains what the flag is: The building is now "The General Consulate of the State of Kuwait." Looks like that tree, too, was destined to grow with a lean. No parking, now, too, except there's a car there. |

p.s. Just to show how dedicated I am.... I checked the photos of Avalon Liquors on Yelp hoping to see an old photograph of the P.E. station hanging on the wall behind their counter! __ 'mystery' location While going through some old files of mine, I found this really cool photograph showing a two-tone red bus and a nifty neighborhood Mobilgas station. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/kuu5JM.jpg eBay? Obviously the photograph was taken somewhere around the Compton area (says so on the bus:)) __ |

______________________ Thanks for locating the Compton red bus photo Hoss. just for fun I've been trying to figure out what businesses are down the street. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/1MiCFF.jpg detail I see: #1 Syke's Insurance #2 Dooley? (it actually looks more like 'Cootewy';), but I really doubt if that's correct. lol) I believe that's the Sherwin-Williams Paint logo* atop the sign, so it could be a hardware store. #3 Amber's (on the blade sign and painted on the side of the building) do you think this is a cocktail lounge? #4 Von's, of course. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/2sSiyu.jpg extreme detail :) *this http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...921/exFJZ1.jpg http://www.icollector.com/Paint-sign...n-co_i21868255 |

Just look at this place noirishers! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/udXMdp.jpg At first I thought the old signage above the door might be from the old Rebel's next to the Wilmington P.E. station. __ |
This is Julius Shulman's "Job 1960: San Fernando Valley Veteran Hospital (San Fernando Valley, Calif.), 1955".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original This image seems to have been taken from a raised position. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original A smaller entrance. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original I've left out a photo of a wall with three windows. This is the only interior shot. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute When I Googled "San Fernando Valley Veteran Hospital", the majority of the results were for this complex in Sylmar, but I can't see the buildings from the pictures above. Were the Shulman photos taken somewhere else? http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original pasadenastarnews.com This place suffered heavy damage in the 1971 earthquake. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original pasadenastarnews.com Here's a different angle. The remaining buildings were demolished soon afterwards, and the area is now a park. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original pasadenastarnews.com |

So the station was somewhere along here, right? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/NsZ6US.jpg gsv Originally post by HossC http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/8QVBe5.jpg So that would explain this rr tower, right? (red arrow) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/h1VMmN.jpg detail / HossC's photo Now I'm curious about the white building with the writing on it at far right.--> _ |
