Looks like this bus stop won’t be open until December 2024. The building should be open and operational by then.

270 Park in film (1967)

Personally, I am quite sad to see 270 come down...

I worked there in the mid '80s when it was still the Manufacturers Hanover HQ and met some wonderful folks. Worked throughout the building including the 50th floor Boardroom and reception areas - what an awesome view from up there!

Anyway, I want to share 270's brief starring turn in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (1967) as the HQ of World Wide Wickets. Notice the original pink sidewalk, when 270 was the real home to Union Carbide.

And I know, the establishing shot of the building is really 277 Park --artistic license.

Is construction starting right when it gets down? When do you guys think the new building will start rising?

For someone who worked there i can see how it'd be sad, if you didn't work there though i doubt you'd care. And imagine working in the new building on an even higher up floor, imagine that view

Thanks for that movie clip, that was sweet. It was nice to see what 270's plaza looked like, before JPMorgan turned it into a fenced off cage. And it made 277 look good too- I love that crown. (And yes I would totally ride that swing stage, that looks fun!) I'm with you, I'm sad to see it come down, it was one of the better buildings on the avenue. I love how 270 and 277 Park looked like a couple (similar size, shape, and facade styles) facing each other across the avenue.

I'm still a bit disappointed this building had to go. It's so peak '60s international mod. But luckily what's coming is even better.

Construction has already started, has been under construction for a while now. As for when we will see the building start to take shape above ground, we’re supposed to be seeing that already, but they’re behind their own schedule as far as that goes. Not by a lot, but could be a couple of months. Now is the time to pay close attention.

Shouldn't this thread be moved to the Supertall Construction forum?

We can move it, but as long as we still can’t see it, and the demolition is pretty much all that’s visible, I thought it’s fine for now. But if foundation work is construction, then yeah, it’s been under construction for over a year. The same guys who did the Vanderbilt foundation were on the job here.

We should probably see this much by february..

The former tower had a Mad Men-era aesthetic that I found appealing. And Chase kept the tower in seemingly perfect condition. I spent some late evenings in one of the tower floors, where a lady friend worked.

But it had issues. The floorplates were way too small, and it was generally an inefficient setup for financial services. And the whole avenue needed a refresh. I'm looking forward to the rebirth of Park, with these new supertalls.

NYguy Jan 4, 2021 9:56 PM

Park Avenue is in the beginnings of a rebirth, particularly on the malls.

Have they decided to widen the medians? I know that they were considering it. I’d like to see the sidewalks widened and landscaped too.

That's actually something I was intending to talk about in the general developments. They're at the input stage, and making the medians larger like they used to be (just not quite as big) is what's on the table.

Dylan Dude Jan 5, 2021 8:11 AM

Once this thing starts rising it'll be so fun to watch. The next most exciting building to watch rise in New York in my opinion. All the other 1,300+ footers are pretty much either finished already or they won't be rising for a while it seems

I thought that it was still tentative. Hopefully, morons obsessed with traffic issues won’t block this.
